Oh how I love a Fiona Gibson book!! Always funny, yet warm, and full of unforgettable characters! This didn't disappoint! I can't wait to read more!
This was my favourite Fiona Gibson book. Lorrie has two teenagers - who sign her up to an online dating agency and what becomes of them is so funny, I’d of loved to hear about more dates. And less about Anton the guy who broke Lorries heart when she was a teenager.
She has a best friend Stu who is also her lodger and I loved their friendship and their closeness. Stu has a job with Parsley force (Love the name) it was such a funny and interesting job and it made me laugh as the thought of such a thing in real life was comical. He has people phone him up when they require something specific like a sauce from that posh place in the west end and he on route gets it for them imagine if there was such a thing? I think it’d be very popular. The things people would ask him to get were so funny.
The way Lorrie was in her job as a manager of a cosmetic department had me shouting at the book in happiness and then annoyance for the way she was treated.
I gobbled this book up and was left wanting more . At the beginning I thought Lorrie came across as someone who couldn’t stand up for herself, but as the book continued I was shouting out loud as she gave as good as she got to people around her. I really disliked Lorries mum and every time she was in a scene I wanted to throw my kindle across the room!
I can’t wait to read more from Fiona.
Thanks goes to net galley and the publishers for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyable read. Good characters and a Good story. Well worth a read. Think others will enjoy.
Lovely easy read about a woman who after 30 years meets up with a guy who broke her heart first time round. Definitely worth a read and an author I will be reading again
Chick lit fan for the (slightly) older lady. Perfect for ladies aged in their 40's who want a light and fun read with a reminder of love from years gone by and the oppurtunity to rekindle in later life but will there be a happy ever after ending?
A perfect book to slip into holiday luggage and enjoy while lazing around the pool or on the beach. I enjoy Fiona Gibson's writing style - an easy read which is littered with Fiona's fantastic dry humour. The story covers many issues which are faced by women everyday including grief, bringing up children as a lone parent, the dynamics within a family and the strong bonds within. There is also the oppurtunity for second chances while also reliving memories from ones younger years.
I must say a big thank you to the author, Fiona Gibson, who hand drew the gorgeous blog tour poster shown at the top of this post, it is fantastic and I feel honoured to be a part of her beautiful work.
This was such a fun read - really enjoyed it. The characters are all very believable and you get engrossed in their lives. Recommended.
I pondered over the rating of this book for some time and finally decided that middle of the road was probably the fairest! I have read other Fiona Gibson books and loved them, and this book was certaingly enjoyable...but...it just wasn't THAT memorable. Lorrie takes centre stage and is a mother of 2 whose children are now reasonably grown up. She has her lodger and long term friend Stu living with her, a job that she loves, and although things haven't always been easy it seems things are now 'easier'. I liked the characters and Lorrie is certainly very readable, however the characters and the storyline were just a bit too vanilla for me.
Lorrie has a request from her first love, who happened to be a French guy named Antoine Rousseau who she met and fell for on an exchange trip in her teens. The story trundled along at a nice pace and it certainly kept me entertained but for some reason it just didn't do any more than that. It was also a little too preditcable which normally wouldn't bother me but with the other niggles I had it just didn't sit right. Overall this was an easy to read book which entertained, but having read and absolutely LOVED books of her susch as Pedigree Mum I couldn't help feel a little bit underwhelmed.
I adore Fiona Gibson books, this being no less special.
I love how empowered her female characters are, how they all have their trials to overcome and how they all go through their own journeys.
This book was not my favourite, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Great story by this author yet again.
Thanks for the chance to read this.
Loved this book! So nice to find a main character that isn't slim young and blonde. Feel good tale which makes you want to give you own life a kick up the backside. Light hearted but inspirational. Cracking read!
I want to say that first and foremost, this book is promising. Very promising, but personally I thought it had downfalls also. For example, the blurb on GoodReads leads you to believe that its a simple book where she meets her teenage love and thats all that happens. When in fact she has life issues to deal with also and as they were a big part of the book I personally feel they should have been highlighted a bit more. Granted I am not an expert in this area so who am I to know, just as a reader, I would have liked the blurb to be more about Lorrie, just like the book.
Saying that, I have to express that I think this is a lovely book full of hope and I honestly believe this would be a great holiday read where you can sit and read it all in one go. As simply reading it over a few lunchtimes left me wanting more. For example, I got to 53% of the way through the book and nothing drastic had happened, we were still learning about Lorrie, her job, her life status and the love of her teenage life coming back into her life 30 years later. But if I remember rightly it was at this point and they hadn’t even met (Hence my disappointment of the blurb!).
I love the idea of this book though. I personally haven’t read a book focusing on a middle aged woman, her love life, work life and family life and it was refreshing to see a love story from an older woman! I just wish it got to the point a bit quicker.
Maybe I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had a very busy month only managing glances at points and I hand on heart believe this could be the reason I’m not singing it’s praises. I think if I was on holiday, I would be able to finish it in a day and then my relationship with the book may be different, I feel as though I could have loved this book had I picked it up at the right moment.
I enjoyed reading about Lorries life, even if I could tell what was going to happen! She was a very relatable character and even though the story dragged a bit, the author managed to skim unnecessary information for the reader and I enjoyed that! (Obviously not in a bad way, I’m talking stuff like getting of a train! Mundane stuff)
I would love to hear more from Lorrie and her tales. She was an impressive woman, and I loved her and her family. We all like a good female role in a book, so thank you Fiona for bringing Lorrie to us!
So all in all, if you were looking for a holiday read I would reccomend this one as you can become quickly abosorbed in the story, not hard to read. Just I dont think it was right for me. It needed a little something else…even if I am not quite sure what it is.
Lorrie is such a lovely character pushed into dating by her children who sign her up to an online dating app. As you might expect she meets some crazy people and despairs of ever finding love again until out of the blue her first love Antoine finds her on Facebook. She's not the young girl she was when they had a holiday romance in France she's thirty years older with two children and a lodger.
Stu, the lodger is her best friend. He has started a business called Parsley Force, where he is on call for people who have forgotten an ingredient for cooking. Parsley Force will find the ingredients that are missing and deliver them to the customer's door. How many times have you wished for such a service? If none exists I think the author has hit upon a great business idea.
There's a lot going on in this book, romance, a demanding mother who's getting married, a job that's not going very well and strange men on a dating site, all handled with Fiona Gibson's trademark humour which shines through from cover to cover.
It's great to reader a book about an older woman coping with everything life throws at her as well as trying to find her own personal happiness.
I did predict what would happen but that made no difference to the story as the fun was finding out what everyone went through to get to their happy ending.
There is something really comforting in Fiona Gibson's books, you just know they will cheer you up and leave you with a satisfied smile on your face.
Fiona Gibson is high on my list of authors I reach for when I'm in need of a good, reliable comfort read.
Guaranteed fun, amusement and light-hearted pleasure which I devoured in two sittings (on the same day!). Not entirely convinced the title fits but hey, never mind!
Recommended to all ChickLit fans!
Thanks to Avon Books UK for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
4.5☆ Fun read
I really enjoyed reading The women who met her match. It was fun, lots of laugh out loud moments, a story of starting over and learning to love again, A story about finding out their place in the crazy new world of dating!
The opening scenes were by far my favourite within the book.
They show Lorrie as a teenager on her first adventure to France in the exchange programe to learn all about the culture etc..
It's here Lorrie is about to make friends and fall in love for the first time.
A real coming of age start to the book, watching Lorrie experiment with Make up and learning to Love herself, was beautifully warmimg.
It was beautiful, Antoine was the older brother where she was staying.
They became inseparable, and shared stolen kisses and tender moments.
However it wasn't too last as soon as Lottie came home Antoine fell in love with he's Sisters best friend... leaving her heartbroken.
Fast forward a good 30 years... Lottie now has two children and is very much grown up and about to embark in the murky waters of modern day online dating!
Lorrie is a great Mum of two and recently lost her husband in a tragic car accident.
However her children have decided their Mum needs to get out there and enjoy life and to meet new people.
So they set her up on a dating site.
With some very funny disastrous dates.
I loved the bits where she was dating. I just wish there was more.
Unfortunately for Lorrie her new disastrous dates are not really doing anything for her confidence. So she decides it may just be time to give up!
That is until Antoine walks back into her life after all these years!
Can they 're kindle their love for one and other?... is there still a spark there?.... why has he waltzed back into her life again after all these years??
......if you want the answers I highly recommend reading the book you won't be disappointed.
Overall a fab read, quirky fun characters, lots of laugh out loud moments, sometimes a lil cringe but I loved It!
A strong female lead, who I admired. Her determination to not give up on finding Love.
Highly recommend to everyone especially readers who love Romcoms, Chick Lit, Women's Literature.
Pretty good book - I enjoyed reading "The Woman who met her match" but at some part, I found the story a bit too slow, I found myself a bit bored from time to time while reading this book and I hesitated to give it 3 stars instead of 4 but the last chapters are so great that I finally decided to give this book 4 stars. In the end I enjoyed this book and I will read with pleasure the next book from Fiona Gibson!
Over recent years I’ve had the pleasure of reading a number of wonderful books written by the author that is Fiona Gibson. As an author who has a very real talent for writing novels that are guaranteed to pick you up and leave you with a smile on your face, I was really looking forward to reading The Woman Who Met Her Match, which is Fiona’s latest release to date. This was a book that more than lived up to my expectations and one that I thought there was so much to love about.
Having lost her partner and the father of her children in a tragic accident, Lorries lives with her daugher Amy, her son Cam and her lodger Stu who she has known for many years. With her two children being keen to see Lorrie in a happy relationship they write Lorrie’s profile and encourage her to sign up to an online dating site, but after a few disastrous dates as a result of this she soon suspends her account. One day, she receives a friend request on Facebook from her first love, Antoine, who she met some thirty years when she was on an exchange trip to France in 1986 when she was just 16 years old. Will things work out with Antoine and be as good as Lorries always hoped they would be or will she realise that the person who is right for her has been right in front of her all along?
Throughout the entirety of this book, I found Lorrie to be a wonderful lead character who I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know. Apart from working hard as a manager at a cosmetic counter in a major department store, Lorrie is a person who is passionate about everything she does and is clearly determined to be the best mother she possibly can be to her two children. As a very down-to-earth character, Lorrie was someone who never seemed to take herself too seriously, tried to adopt a positive attitude and never wanted to let her problems defeat her and as such I admired her greatly. The people that surrounded her who we met along the way from her children, to her lodger Stu to her mother and many more as well all added something special to the story and helped to make it as successful as it was.
As many who have read Fiona’s previous novels will know, Fiona has a truly fabulous writing style that I personally adore and I’ve found that her books just keep getting better and better. The Woman Who Met Her Match was certainly one of these books, my favourite of Fiona’s to date and I particularly loved the way in which there were a number of different subplots running throughout the book, all of which helped to keep me entertained and interested. I loved the way in which Fiona has thrown a number of surprises into the novel to keep us on our toes, turning The Woman Who Met Her Match into an unpredictable read and one that I found to be very hard to put down.
The Woman Who Met Her Match was an uplifting and often hilarious read that I couldn’t get enough of. It was so lovely to be reunited with Fiona’s writing after what feels like a very long time and I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an enjoyable, easy read, full of characters who you can really relate to and care for. I’m already looking forward to reading what Fiona writes next!
As expected, a Fiona Gibson book that sets out to entertain the reader and succeeds very well with that. As I was reading (and laughing out loud at times) I could relate to some of the stories told to me by single friends which made the book really come alive. Buy this book for a fun read.
Lorrie might be the woman who met her match, but I’m the woman who has met her perfect chicklit novel.
Of late, the quality of chicklit books I’ve read has been rather low, but The Woman Who Met Her Match has restored my faith.
Despite the blurb, the storyline does not revolve around Lorrie travelling to France (most of the book is set in London, but don't fret, we do get a few pretty scenes with the French setting) and starting up a relationship with her first love, Antoine. There’s a little more to it than that.
There’s quite a bit about ageism. The plot surrounding Lorrie’s new employers especially highlights that we have a long way to go towards changing people’s attitudes about when a woman has reached her use-by date. (At 46, Lorrie is mature without being over the hill, in my opinion, but it might be something to do with the fact I'm also 46...)
Fat shaming is also a huge issue tackled in the book. I’d like to say the number of times this happens to Lorrie was an artistic exaggeration, but I know it was probably spot on. (It doesn’t help of course that, like everyone else in her/my generation, Lorrie suffers from low self esteem.)
Gibson also adds the themes of handling grief, the futility of revenge, and forgiveness with a deft touch.
In the romance department, there’s a plethora of men parading through Lorrie’s life. There’s the aforementioned Antoine, a couple of likely (and not likely) candidates she meets via an online dating site, a cutie from the dog park, and you might even count Lorrie’s old friend and boarder, Stu.
I liked that none of her potential suitors were tycoons ready to sweep her off her feet and into their sports cars/yachts/private islands. Antione was as close as we got to a millionaire, but even he was not over the top.
Choosing a hero for me to cheer on wasn’t a difficulty. Lorrie's end game guy was my choice, so at last the HEA had me punching the air in happiness.
I enjoyed the way Gibson wrote the romantic scenes. I thought there was just the right balance between sexy and sweet.
Well, actually, I enjoyed everything about this book. I will definitely be checking out Gibson’s other novels. Highly recommend for those looking for a satisfying chicklit read.
5 out of 5
This is a fabulous feel-good read! Having recently read a few psychological and crime thrillers I was ready for a warm and witty novel, and Fiona Gibson always delivers just that.
The story centres around Lorrie, a woman in her mid-forties bringing up two teenagers on her own whilst holding down a full time job and juggling it all with the demands of her mother - who, in herself, is quite a character.
Very entertaining with a hint of sadness and lots of love, this is a book I have no hesitation in recommending. A superbly mood raising read!
I received an arc via Net Galley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
Lorrie is 40 and single with great children, she loves her job as manager of a cosmetics department and she has been on a dating site but the results were disastrous.......and obviously very funny..........and so decides she will forget about love, her life is great as it is......until out of the blue she hears from Antoine. Antoine was the teenage love of her life but it was on a trip to France decades ago - she can't go back there.......can she!
A great story in true Fiona Gibson style - full of great comic moments and fantastic characters - I especially loved Stu and his business great idea! A must for the beach this summer.
