Really enjoyed this book. Fiona Gibson never fails to impress and is always entertaining. This novel is suitable for all ages as with all her previous novels, which have been enjoyed both by myself and my aged parent.....Well written and great attention to the little details that really make a good book.
I loved this story combining a huge amount of humour, family relationships, best friends and first love. Lorrie's children have signed her up on an internet dating site and she 'endures' some very amusing dates which lead her to think that it's time to call time on dating in her forties.
Her first love gets in touch with her on facebook and after hearing about a wonderful summer that she spent in France on an exchange trip, we look forward to meeting Antoine and seeing whether he is the missing piece of the jigsaw.
She has an amazing best friend who is currently lodging with them , who is always there to pick up the pieces . He has set up an amazing sounding business called Parsley Force - which supplies people who discover that they are missing a vital ingredient for their evening meal, or want some rare hard to find cheese or maybe need something for evening meal after having had a drink. What a wonderful idea.
She works for a lovely company selling cosmetics and we see her caring, nurturing side as she helps her customers feel special and pampered. I loved the scenes where she visited the ladies who set up the company.
It was a really engaging read- making you aware of the perils of internet dating in your 40's (or older!). I cringed along with her as she met some of the men. I was rooting for one in particular.
I always enjoy a Fiona Gibson book and I must buy a few more of her earlier books to enjoy.
Loved, loved, loved this book. Chick-lit for those no longer in their 20's. I will definitely look out for more books by this Author.
I'll admit, I was UBER excited about Fiona's new book as soon as I saw it! Have you SEEN that font?! Vintage swirls meet bold and inspirational, that's my take on the font anywhoo!
SO, the book!! Lorrie, a single mum to two teenagers that are adamant to get her love life rocketing from 0-100, with a little help from a certain online dating site. Little did she know what colourful men she would meet on the dates! Cringe! Being a single lady in her forties didn't seem to worry Lorrie TOO much, yet when her past decided to reappear once again, her personal life decided to use a question mark for a hat.
Can you imagine that, having a question mark for a hat? Wouldn't really keep your head dry if it rained though, eh?
Just like Fiona Gibson's previous novels, TWWMHM (The Woman Who Met Her Match) was full of one liners, sarcastic humour and enough cringey moments to keep you full until dinner time (aka A LOT). Honestly! Some of the things Lorrie's dates came out with caused my hand to fly up to my face so quickly due to embarrassment, I ended up slapping my own face! Classy TWG, classy.
I thought that the French addition to the storyline was a genius idea as I was able to see a different side to Lorrie. She seemed to have a larger than life personality and I wanted her to show it off!
What really hit home with Fiona's novel was the underlying inspirational touch throughout the entire storyline. Instead of the frequent use of candyfloss inspirational messages, Fiona incorporated fictional kicks up the tooshes into her relatable, bold storyline. There didn't seem to be any unattainable hidden messages about situations that could happen once in a blue moon; instead there were positivity outcomes to real life circumstances. What more could you want? For me, the real life edge gave the entire storyline its own special platform and made it stand out from the rest.
Whilst I enjoyed the overall storyline, there were a couple of moments where the storyline slowed down and I ended up wondering where it was heading. Luckily, it did get its little nudge and the storyline picked back up again but I did hope that Lorrie could have filled that gap with her big personality.
There were A LOT of things in this book that made me laugh out loud and think to myself , many things which could be seen as spoilers so I'll keep it to myself. BUT, those thought-provoking moments in the storyline really did open my mind and helped me to see certain things in a different light.
TWWMHM is a bubbly, colourful, laugh out loud read which will keep you on your toes, and have you reaching for a slice of cake to support Lorrie. When the Spice Girls used the term 'girl power' back in the nineties, I ignored it, yet Fiona Gibson has just made 'girl power' popular again thanks to THIS novel.
Yet another delightful and insightful novel from the very talented, Fiona Gibson. Definitely NOT to be missed!
Thank you Avon Books!
As a fan of Fiona Gibson I was looking forward to reading this. The minute I seen the cover I knew this would be a great book.
The story inside was not as I was expecting, I thought it would be more romance etc and go down the one route of the main character falling in love with an old flame.
This was good however as I didnt expect many parts of the story and I felt I knew how it was going to go but it went a different way.
I loved the main character Lorrie. A middle aged woman with two kids the love of her life has sadly died, which instantly makes you feel for the poor woman. We learn shes actually really strong hard working, she cares about everyone, she sticks up for herself, doesnt take any nonsense and she just wants to be happy and in love.
Id love to hear more from Lorrie in the future as she is an amazing character.
The woman who met her match was a great book that I enjoyed . If you like the type of book you can pick up, put down, then pick back up and fall straight back into it then this is the book for you.
We meet Lorrie who is starting to date again after several years of being a single mum. She finds and meets up with her first love after 30 years will there be any spark?
Another great book by Fiona and I'd love a sequel to this book as I'd love to find out what happens next.
Thanks Netgalley. I loved this book and love Fiona Gibson, please make this a series
Lorrie has never eased herself back into a proper relationship since the death of her partner, David. Now spurred on by her two teenage children, she has agreed to sign up with an online dating site, where she discovers that you can’t woo a man and eat your cake too. Then Lorrie has a blast from the past - a Facebook friend request from Antoine, the French guy who won her heart during a student exchange thirty years earlier. Is her romantic luck about to change?
This novel centres around a midlife character who was very easy to warm to. The story flows through several threads surrounding Lorrie’s job as manager of a beauty counter, her mother’s upcoming nuptials, and her lodger Stu’s new food delivery business. Far too predictable on the romantic front but overall an enjoyable read.
Really enjoyed this book I was really rooting for the main character from the very beginning. The characters frustrations, happiness, despair, joy all came to life through the books writing. Will be reading more of the authors back catalogue
Lorrie is in her forties, a single mum of two, she decides to try online dating which ends in disaster. She decides enough is enough until she receives a friend request from Antoine, a man she had romantic fling with while on a student exchange in France when she was sixteen, over thirty years ago.
Lorrie has to decide whether to go to France to meet him whilst things are going sideways in her personal life. Her mum is getting married and wants Lorrie to drop everything and help her. Her job, which she loves as a beauty manager is in jeopardy and her best friend Stu, who is her lodger, is thinking of moving out.
This was a nice easy read with a good collection of characters, Lorrie is a very independent character that I enjoyed reading about. Lorrie’s mother was demanding and was constantly putting her down, overall an unpleasant lady. This was a lovely book and the ending was perfect.
I loved this! Fiona Gibson is always so great at writing personable characters that are easy to relate to and care about.
While reading this I found myself wishing that this book was part of of a series about Lorrie and her life/career. I'd love to read more about her life after La Beaute.
Such a fun read and very endearing. I couldn't put it down!
