My first Kathryn Croft novel and definitely not the last. A welcome surprise - very readable and quickly got hooked into the story.
Tara returns from what should have been a quick visit to a neighbour's house - The only problem is she has left her neighbour dead in his bed and has no recollection of how that happened. The book follows Tara's quest to discover the true accounts of that night.
I liked how the story took place in a realistic suburban setting. The descriptions of the teenage daughter and her mood swings were very relatable - It takes a person to experience a teenager in the house to know how sometimes you have to tread very carefully!
The policeman in charge of the investigation, DCI Hunt did seem a little too good to be true - Not sure all of his escapades would be seen as entirely professional but this was only a small criticism and didn't spoil the read.
As with any book of the type, there is a feeling of suspense as you build up to the crescendo of the last few chapters. As usual, I had no chance of guessing whodunnit!
This was definitely filled with twists and turns...so many it got a little too far out there. It kept me reading, even when I was dubious and a little disappointed. Just too many red herrings.
Im not sure if anyone remembers but a while back i went on a real Kathryn Croft binge and read nearly all the books she has released because she is just a fantastic author and i can't beileve i never actually wrote the review to this one! However, after a quick recap of the story line i am ready to share my thoughts on this gripping thriller.
Tara wakes up one morning, she is not in her bed with a man who is not her husband - shes with her neighbour who has been murdered. Tara cannot remember the night before, but she knows she didn't murder him - so she leaves and keeps quiet. She just wants life back to normal. As we follow the story from Taras POV - we start to learn, there is alot of secrets and these are running the risk of ruining everything.
While you were sleeping is another story were i felt i couldnt really trust anyone, because everyone was out to protect themselves. As all these mysterys tumble out - we are thrown all over with the narrative and its brilliant, its a page turner from the get go, and nothing is as simple as it seems.
The characters were all well developed and as we learnt more about each of them, you felt like you were involved in the drama, each was fleshed out and created brilliantly down from Tara (the mother protecting her family) to Rosie (a real true to life teenager lying her way through all her secrets) While you were sleeping is by far the best read by Kathryn Croft (and i love her madly) it is a real hook you in and never leave until you get the answers kind of read, and when you do - you will be left shocked.
Thrilling read. Highly recommended for those who love suspenseful reads.
This is a fantastic book with many unexpected twists and turns. Couldn't put it down, read in two sittings. I would definitely recommend reading this book
A woman gets ready to spend a quiet weekend alone after her husband leaves for a business trip and her children spend the weekend with others. Her world gets torn apart when she receives a text from her neighbor asking her to stop over. When she arrives the neighbors not home but her husband is and invites her in to have a drink and that's the last thing she remembers after she wakes up in her neighbors bed and finds him dead. She leaves before anyone sees her but she holds the guilt inside her while dealing with suspicion of her daughter's involvement in his death. Her daughter has a history of stalking a boy and when she finds out her daughter wasn't where she said she was the night of the murder she becomes concerned. Meanwhile the police have come to question her husband who also lied about where he was that night and she finds out he was meeting his mistress whom she thought things were over between them. As if that isn't enough her sister's boyfriend has assaulted her sister and disappeared so she has moved in until they capture him and she has a stalker of her own at work. I read this in one sitting I wanted to find out what happened and I wasn't disappointed.
Loved this book just like I've loved her other books! Sometimes this one dragged just slightly but it soon picked up the pace again. It's full of twists and turns and red herrings (all you need!) and will defo have you guessing until the end and turning pages well into the night...enjoy!
Having read the first 2 books by this author I was delighted to be able to read this one prior to publication day. Tara Logan wakes up naked in a neighbours bed and finds him dead.. fabulous opening chapter and the book continues to keep the reader intrigued and gripped throughout.
It's fast paced and interesting but too many coincidences to really hold the story together. By the end I had nor only guessed the killer's identity but was totally sick of every character. Sigh. So much potential.
I was immediately drawn into this story. The first chapter had me wanting so much more, it was hard to put down. I read this book in two sittings, I literally just couldn't put it down. I liked the sections that alternated from the past to the present I felt it brought more questions. It gave it more of a mystery feel to me. I also like that there are a few different story lines going on throughout the book.
I know that Rosie is only 17, but I felt she was so immature throughout the whole book. I didn't like her character from the moment she was introduced. None of the other characters annoyed me the way she did, and trust me I was annoyed at pretty much every character at one point or another. I like that each character has their own secrets, and as the story goes on the secrets get deeper and deeper.
Overall I enjoyed this book even more that I thought I would, which was surprising. Just when you feel like you know who the perpetrator is you get blindsided. The twists and turns kept me turning the pages. I thought it was over and BOOM here's another twist. I thought it was a great book, and I can't wait to read more by Kathryn. Her writing style flows easily and is fun to read.
A good twisting thriller that keeps you guessing right untill the end
I have not read any of this author's books before and after reading this book, I would certainly read more of her books.
For me, the book started a little slow, but the paced picked up towards the second half. With a lot of these types of books, I can see the ending come a mile away, but that certainly wasn't the case here. It totally caught me by surprise! Normally, that alone would probably garner a 4star review, but in this case I am going with 3.5 stars, and ended up rounding down to 3, mainly because I found that I really didn't like or care about any of the characters.Generally speaking, none of the characters really had any redeeming qualities and seemed to lie constantly. I found the story of the detective to be somewhat unbelievable. would he really risk his career and reputation and get involved with a major suspect in a murder investigation ? especially one who seems to constantly lie to him/her family etc.
Having said all that, I did enjoy the book and finished it in a pretty short period of time, and appreciate having had the opportunity to read it.
What was that!?!?!?!?
The story was mixed in a tricky way with a lot of suspects. Of course there were mistakes and omissions. It was like the writer not felt 100% safe for the choices or even be afraid that would be lost in complexity.
I felt that it went from a safe distance.
But the point of the book achieved ... the guilty was caught and the most important was that it did not go my mind to that person only when I discovered by the writer ...
3 stars ... although it could better ..
Bookouture and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of While You Were Sleeping. This is my honest opinion of the book.
Tara Logan lives what seems like a perfect life with her husband Noah, her teenage daughter Rosie, and her younger son Spencer. When she wakes up in her neighbor Lee's bed, with no recollection as to how she got there, Tara is scared into being silent. As she tries to remember the sequence of events that led to the horrific scene, Tara decides to investigate and piece together what happened. When innuendos start flying, leaving Tara with more questions than answers, will the ultimate truth threaten to destroy her family?
Honestly, there was just too much going on in this relatively short book to make it cohesive. I usually enjoy the twists and turns of a suspense/thriller, but this one was a little over the top for me. The perpetrator just really did not make sense, as all of the clues were absent until the reveal at the end of the book. In addition, I found it hard to have sympathy for the main character, as her unreliability coupled with her personality made it difficult for me to forge a connection. While You Were Sleeping may appeal to readers who enjoy psychological thrillers/suspense, I would give the book an average rating.
Unfortunately I just could not get into the book at all! I found it lacked the usual tenseness of a Kathryn Croft book, and I couldn't feel any empathy for any of the characters at all.
A very clever "whodunnit" Tara has no recollection of what happened prior to,wKing up in bed next to her neighbour Lee, who she discovers is dead. I was really unsure as to who had killed Lee and the suspense throughout was gripping. So many twists and turns in this gripping read.
I gate only giving this book three stars because I did love it... apart from the ending which I felt let it down so badly I couldn't score higher.
The characters were well drawn and there were enough twists and turns to make me want to keep reading till late into the night. However the climax whilst unexpected was very poorly thought out and simply an easy way to conclude the story. Everything even the blurb for the book balanced on Tara not remembering what happened that night and yet there was no way the murderer ( I won't give the culprit away for those of you who still choose to read it) could have known that was going to happen.
So sorry a lot of promise with an extremely sloppy ending.
This book is hard, because I truly wanted to love it, but I just think something was missing. The writing tended to be hard to read, because of overused words and characters were not very likeable. I really thought that it could have been an excellent book, but unfortunately I don't think the author took the right path to make it such, because it was too unbelievable. While not my favorite, I plan on rereading and seeing if it was a mood thing and would recommend, because it was great in areas!
Great psychological thriller that held my interest throughout.
Lots of twists and turns. This book will really keep you guessing
and with an ending I could not have predicted.
thank you netgalley and the author for a copy of this book to review
