This novel starts out slow but I found myself engrossed by this story set in the aftermath of WWII in England. Captain Harry Tennant is an investigator looking into war crimes at the end of the war. He doesn’t investigate the big ones, but they are still crimes even if they don’t get the attention the others acquire. When Rose Kearney makes inquiries into the disappearance of her brother there are some characteristics to the situation and Harry’s unit is assigned to the case. As the investigation unfolds he starts asking questions that put him in danger as he uncovers a web of lies and deceit that others want to remain hidden.

An excellent book that made me want to read more — always a good sign.
Lots of twists and turns; emotional impacts; deft characterization; and realistic setting. Well researched too.
Recommended to mystery readers and those who enjoy books about WW2 and its aftermath.
