I'm always on the lookout for new fantasy series that aim to do things a little different and the Licanius trilogy, of which this is the first book, seems to fit the bill quite nicely. This tells the stories of Davian, Wirr, Asha and Caeden, four individuals learning their strengths and weaknesses while trying to stay alive and recover lost memories. What I liked so much about this book was that the author does not spoon feed the reader - he assumes that we are adept enough to follow threads without necessarily knowing too much about the story. There are some sections that are confusing on first read, but Islington has done a remarkable job of linking everything together. Some of the reveals in the latter stages of the book are shocking, some I saw coming and some just gave me that satisfying 'aha' moment when something that I hadn't understood was explained for me. I really enjoy books that do this well and for the most part, this one does. The rules of the power system in use are interesting and quite original, the machinations of rival factions within power are welcome and well constructed and the world building is convincing. My only criticism is that I found the main characters a little bit flat but I am hoping that as the trilogy continues, this issue will be resolved and I am eagerly anticipating the next instalment.
