Obsession by Amanda Robson
Avon Books UK, 4th May 2017
Synopsis:
Carly and Rob are a perfect couple. They share happy lives with their children and their close friends Craig and Jenny. They’re lucky. But beneath the surface, no relationship is simple: can another woman’s husband and another man’s wife ever just be good friends?
Little by little, Carly’s question sends her life spiralling out of control, as she begins to doubt everything she thought was true. Who can she trust? The man she has promised to stick by forever, or the best friend she has known for years? And is Carly being entirely honest with either of them?
Review:
Amanda Robson's debut is a domestic psychosexual thriller containing a lot of highly charged eroticism. Married couple Carly and Rob ramp up their sex life after Rob reluctantly reveals that, if not married to Carly, he'd go for long-time friend Jenni, who is married to Craig.
Told from the perspectives of Carly, Rob, Jenni, and Craig, what ensues has potentially damaging effects on each of the characters' lives. Subjects including alcoholism and depression rear their heads and are covered sensitively, although I feel these are overshadowed by the copious number of sex scenes.
It's an easy read, and although I didn't warm to any of the characters, I do feel this may have been intentional on the part of the author. Rapidly changing POVs hold the interest; the title fits the book perfectly, too!

This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended
So this comes under Thriller, Domestic Thriller without a doubt. However, it was repetitive, same descriptions over and over to the point of being annoying.
Dysfunctional.
Mind twisting but just too many other distractions that annoyed me.
I thought it was me at first until I read some other peoples reviews.
I usually like a good domestic noir/thriller but this wasn’t out on a lead going anywhere really.
Others have enjoyed it, so don’t be put off by me.
Well, this was a book with some mixed up characters. They weren’t likeable but this didn’t really bother me. I wondered what would happen next and how far the characters would go!
The characters lives became very tangled and even more complicated. It was a twisty kind of story that kept me on my toes throughout.
The pacing was good although at times I found that parts could have been cut out and condensed just to keep the pace a little more even.
If you like being a fly on the wall in a domestic setting. Seeing people’s lives slowly but surely implode then look no further!
Obviously to late to review this now since its out and has been for awhile. Still on my radar and will review when I read
"One evening, a wife asks her husband a question: who else would you go for, if you could?
It is a simple question – a little game – that will destroy her life."
Disappointed with this wishy washy story, not what I would class a psychological thriller, and one that by the end I didn't really know or care who was lying.
I really didn't enjoy this book at all and gave up around the half way point. The short choppy chapters didn't give the reader the chance to engage in the story, and all four main characters are some of the most annoying and vapid characters I've ever come across in a book. Despite trying I can honestly say there was nothing I liked about it. This one was not for me.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
Absolutely brilliant book with a great twist at the end you will not see coming. I have never read any work by this author before but am eager to see what else she writes.
Two couples whose lives entangle with each chapter written in the eyes of the four individual characters. I wouldn't say this is a pyschological thriller as such and none of the characters are actually likeable but I didn't guess what happens throughout and certainly not the ending. On the whole I quite enjoyed it but felt it could have been a bit shorter.
When I started reading Obsession, I was confused. I thought I'd picked up a thriller but it felt more like erotica. Sorry this wasn't for me.
A chilling, intense and thrilling psychological thriller. Obsession by Amanda Robson is narrated by 4 unlikeable characters and keeps the reader gripped throughout.
I was surprised to find that Obsession was Amanda Robson’s debut novel, as it had all the feel of an experienced story-teller. When Carly asks her GP doctor Rob what other woman he likes she is surprised by his answer… their good friend Jenny. Met on an NCP course, they attended together and becoming firm friends because of their similar career paths (both Jenny & Carly are nurses) and families who have strong religion. Carly just can’t get the thought of Jenny & her husband together out of her head.
Slowly it becomes clear that Carly has an unhealthy and possibly irrational jealousy of Jenny and so plots her revenge for what she sees as Jenny taking her husband by setting her sights on Jenny’s. The twists that unfold lead the reader into a very dark world of obsession and mental illness, but the lines for me were blurred and just who had the obsession in this story.
While the obvious obsession stems from Carly as the plot progresses we are drawn into looking at Jenny and Rob also and at times it’s not clear what is true and what is part of the “obsession” of whichever character we are viewing from.
Each character has their own voice in this story so we really get to be in their head and see the story through them, which at times was disturbing, but this was a book which held me till the last page and I’ll definitely being going back for me of Amanda Robson’s work if it’s all as good as this debut
Marriage and betrayal, all the hallmarks of a good novel and this is certainly no exception. Told from the different viewpoints of the two couples involved this was a quick easy read that kept me gripped throughout.
A great enjoyable psychological thriller, this will keep you turning the pages right up to the end, then you will want more.
This was a good read just not my cup of tea but for someone who likes books like this it was good
Obsession is the debut novel written by Amanada Robson that was labelled as a psychological thriller. As someone who thoroughly enjoys reading books of this genre, I couldn’t wait to begin Obsession and went into it with very high hopes. One thing that can definitely be said about this book is that it was a thought-provoking and shocking read the likes of which I’ve never read before. It certainly stands out from the crowd!
Carly and Rob have been married for several years, work at the same GP surgery and have had three children together - Pippa, Matt and John. One day Carly asks Rob who he would go for if he wasn’t married to her and is totally unprepared when he reluctantly says Jenni Rossiter, their friend of many years who is married to Craig. Although he doesn’t know it at the time, this revelation is one that has a number of consequences that turn out to be truly catastrophic and will completely change the lives of each and every one of the characters in one way or another.
The story is told from the perspectives of each of the four main characters - Rob, Carly, Jenni and Craig. As a story that is told in this way, I felt that this is something that works really well as it allows the reader to get to know each of them as individuals and really get inside their heads. Whilst I couldn’t relate to the vast majority of what the characters were going through and thought that their behaviour was often quite bizarre and bordering on unbelievable I found that I became extremely involved with their lives, relationships and secrets.
Although I wasn’t massively keen on the erotic scenes that appeared within Obsession, scenes which in my opinion occurred far too frequently and unnecessarily and my rating of the book reflects this, I must say that I think Amanda has done a spectacular job with the book. Throughout the book we see Amanda deal with a number of different themes, including depression, alcoholism and paranoia to name just a few whilst the tension builds continuously. I thought that the book was incredibly well written in an engaging style, with Amanda raising a number of questions throughout that left me desperately turning the pages to find out the answers to them.
Every now and then you come across a book that is appropriately titled and for me Obsession is one of those books - the characters were obsessed with eachother and I found that I was well and truly obsessed with it. For a debut novel I thought that it was very accomplished and it’s certainly left me looking forward to reading more by Amanda in the future. I feel certain that we will see many more great things from her!
A tense and unpredictable read that kept me turning the pages. Thanks for the ARC,
Any good lawyer will tell you, never ask a question that you don't already have the answer to. Surprises are never good.
So imagine you ask your husband who would he like as a partner in life, and he actually answers you. And its someone you know....
The interaction between Carly and Rob, and how she tries to process Rob's answer was very interesting and made the book a great read.
Recommended.
Well, I must admit I think the best way to describe this book is a rollercoaster. As a reader you are thrown into every feeling possible and you are left wanting for more until there isn’t any more.
First of all I just want to thank Amanda. You surprised me and took me on a high speed adventure so thank you. In took me just 2 days to finish this book and that’s all because it was such a nice quick read. I havn’t been on a journey like that in a while so thank you once again.
Obsession, follows two couples. Carly & Rob and Jenni & Craig. Each chapter of the book is told through the eyes of each character. Which allows you to gain an insight into each of them as an individual and how their minds function. Although I must say this does not help you work out the ‘bigger picture’ and you try to see if you can predict what happens next, but unfortunatley I wasn’t able. It didn’t stop me trying but overall I had no idea what was coming, I say overall as I did guess a few elements but seriously there minor.
This book includes everything you may want from a book and more actually. If I am being honest, it was actually more than I could have expected from one book. How one book could include, lies, revenge, sex, lust, love, mental health, addiction and religion is crazy. But it works, its not too much! I don’t want to give to much away as I truly believe you need to ride this rollercoaster. Theres a point and you think, this must be the end there can’t be anything else and then BAM more twists, turns and drama is thrown at you, never ending.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I liked any of the characters that much, well maybe one, but to me that was ok, it was like Amanda didn’t want us to like them. I liked how you got to see from each of their point of view and how it flipped from one person to the next. It was fascinating and really was hard to put down.
I would recommend this book if your a fan of physiological thrillers. Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book!
