A five star winner from this author. Superb plot, kept me gripped from start to finish. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future. Hands down one of the best books of this year so far.
I was given an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and independent review.
This story is narrated through the four main characters, two married couples. I was gripped from the start and the twists and turns throughout kept me hooked. Whilst the characters are brilliantly written they are not always likeable. It is not easy to describe what happens without giving away any spoilers.
A twisted storyline that had me shaking my head in disbelief at many stages.
A great debut novel from Amanda Robson. I will definitely read more from this author.
4.5****
I enjoyed this book initially but then I felt it started to drag a bit. I normally like chapters from different characters perspectives but for some reason I found the change hard to follow at times. I didn't warm to any of the characters but did find the outcome of each interesting.
Carly and Rob are married, their best friends are Jenny and Craig. One day Carly asks Rob question and he mentions Jenny and from then on everything between the two couples goes downhill Carly turns to alcohol as she thinks her husband wants to be with Jenny and so she decides she wants Craig, Jenny is very religious and everything she does is supposedly with god in mind.
The story is told from each persons perspective, although I found the way Jenny handled the situations for someone who was so religious a bit odd..
This was quite a dark thriller, the consequences of a seemingly simple question between Carly and Rob caused a multitude of problems and devastated all their lives. I was not sure who could be believed, both women came across as slightly mad although I preferred Carly to Jenny who I thought came across as a hypocrite and Rob was no angel either. A good book with a lot of different twists, some believable, some not.
This book had me gripped from the first page to the last. It's full of twists and turns and is quite a dark read. It is told in alternating chapters by the different main characters and I genuinely didn't know who to trust or believe. I would definitely recommend this book
Excellent book! Great characters and a brilliant storyline. I would highly recommend this book.
This book was scandalous as hell and so so delicious! I loved the ups and downs and never knew who I was really rooting for until I found myself caring for all 4 of the main characters. Great read.
Did I like this book? Wrong question. In fact it’s the worst question you could ask about a book like Obsession. Amanda Robson debut novel is not a book anyone can ever say the ‘liked’ and I challenge you to say otherwise.
First off, I don’t mean at all that this is not a good book, not in fact one of the best of its kind. The thing is if you’re into books where the good guy wins in the end then you’re looking in the wrong place. Because in this one nobody wins. The characters are hateful 90% of the time and it shows a skill as a writer to be able to put together a novel where you can’t even like a child character.
Now as anyone who regularly reads my blog knows, I don’t finish books which I think are rubbish. So the fact I got to the end of this one shows that it is definitely worth a read. Just don’t accept a happy ending. Expect that the characters you initially like soon become characters you abhor and expect that the constant references to Jenni’s muddy, cow pat, massive eyes and the frequent religious obsession is going to get on your nerves. But that’s the beauty of it (I think) it’s supposed to. It stressed me out. But I think that was the point.
I’ve seen this novel described on Goodreads as being like watching an accident unfold and being unable to stop it. That’s exactly correct, you can see all the pieces falling together but none of the characters can and the frustration is what forces you forward and pushes you to continue reading. The repetition of names and words and the frequent addresses to the same points irritate you to the point that you feel the narrating characters own feelings towards the character they’re describing. You know that one person who gets on your nerves no matter what they do? This book is that person.
I give it 3* as there were bits that could have been better, I feel certain parts of the plot could have been explored more in depth and that certainly some parts of it seemed as if the author had begun with one idea and then not fully persued it leaving the reader feeling a little lost. The relationship between Jenni and Rob being a prime example. Did it have anything to do with the initial question in the end? I’m not so sure. I like the idea that this book went with but I’m unsure it had the overall desired effect.
Obsession is a psychological thriller told in each chapter by the four different characters in the book. Each character has their good and bad points and you find yourself taking sides with each of them. It's difficult to discuss more of the book without giving away major spoilers which would not make the events that unfold so shocking. The variety of emotions drag you along at tremendous force leaving the reader breathless at times. The ending almost left me traumatised, what a story....so good but it should come with a health warning.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for opportunity to review this book
Be aware I didn't read this cover to cover - I skipped through, about 10% at a time after the first few pages left me so aghast at the terrible, clunky, forced narrative that I was unable to simply ditch it; I had to find out how bad it would get. The problem wasn't so much the plot - though it was feverish in its attempt to try and shock - but the absolutely puerile second-person voices of all four characters, where they constantly repeat each other's names in order to sound..what? Menacing?
As a Netgalley reviewer, we are asked not to quote from books which haven't been published yet, as I suppose edits could change things, so I will make up a random sample to make it clear what I found so irksome!
'You were always jealous Kelly, weren't you? Kelly. You sit there, so fragile and pretty. Oh Kelly, don't you know I can see through you Kelly?'
Just baffling. All four central characters do this incessantly, so all four have essentially the same voice, which just curdles any sense of them as separate beings. There was a twist of sorts at the end, but even at the rate I was jumping through I disliked them all so much I didn't care who lived or died.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. At one point I nearly gave up. However I'm glad that I didn't because in the end I liked it a lot.
The way Amanda Robson slowly develops the characters with each, revealing more about themself, through short 'first person' chapters, makes this an enjoyable novel.
This story has more twists and turns than the maze at Hampton Court. It certainly kept me intrigued. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next.
The author's style is entertaining. She has created a genuine psychological thriller. I won't say any more, for fear of spoiling the ending.
I will certainly look forward to reading more of her novels in future.
My thanks go to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for a copy in exchange for this review
An excellent psychological debut novel. This is a story of affairs, jealousy, suspicion and revenge between two couples which eventually leads to murder. Rob couldn't tell his wife Carly that she was the only woman he loved, and instead tells her that he likes Jennie their close friend and so the damage is done.
I just had to keep reading this, and I felt like I'd been on a roller coaster when I finished it but I loved it!
I got into this book straight away. I liked the fact it was told in letter form from the view of each of the characters. The story had many twists and I found myself wanting to get to the next page to see what happened.
Loved the fact there was some
racy parts , it made the characters seem more intense.
At times it seemed to be quite dark but what a great read and debut novel . I look forward to the next book from this author .
This book is now in my top reads of 2017. It was a total time suck on my weekend, with me retreating to various rooms and sporting events for my children clutching my kindle and snarling. It reminded me of the writing of Lisa Hall, and I loved it. I really enjoy it when you hate a character one minute, love them and pity them the next. There were no winners in this book. Everyone lost. A fabulous plot, showing how one small question can change people's life forever. Car crash reading. You know something is coming, you see the lights. You can't get out of the way.
Two couples, Carly and Rob and Jenny and Craig. They seem to have perfect lives and have found the perfect couple’s relationship with each other. Perfect that is, until one wife asks her husband if he could sleep with any other woman who would it be? The answer sends shock waves, anger, bitterness and betrayal through a previously perfect friendship. Can men and women ever really be just friends? A look at the dark side of “couple friendships” and yet another reason, I, personally, steer clear of them. Creepy
