A gripping psychological thriller that I couldn’t put down. This book reeled me in from the start. I recommend this book to all psychological thriller fans.
When Professor David Connolly hears the words, I think you’re my father, from Zoe a student, his world is in shock! Who is Zoe and what damage will she reek for this family!
This lacked a little edge for me. I wish if gripped me a bit more. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review:
Told from two perspectives.
This was a brilliant idea to do that as it gets the reader in deeper I thought.
So David is married, has children within this marriage and now another daughter turns up saying she’s his. And he is her father.
This has such an effect (as you can imagine) on the family dynamics that the marriage is failing and most importantly, his children are in danger.
Just who is this girl?!
It made me keep on reading, it took my interest and was entertained throughout in keeping my brain occupied. I read a lot of thrillers and can honestly say they did a good job with this one. Not perfect but it kept me turning pages
Really enjoyable read. Good characters and a Good story. Well worth a read. Think others will enjoy.
A brilliant gripping thriller. A must read for all
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
I found it very difficult to differentiate between the characters.
The story was unbelievable and way to slow.
Not for me.
Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to have read this great book.
What happens if your past comes to your future, and totally disrupts your future.... Makes you scared of sowing your wild oats doesn't it! David's past comes back in the form of Zoe.... but is all what it seems?
Entertaining read.
Girl Unknown was an okay book that I enjoyed.
Loved the twists throughout which took me by surprise.
If you like psychological thriller books give this one a read.
I really enjoyed the book, it has everything I love in a novel from start to finish. I can’t wait to read what the author has planned next!
I hate writing negative reviews but this novel really is nothing like I expected it to be. Zoe walks into David's office and says she might be his daughter. Instantly, he has a total personality transplant and his own family are driven away. David is totally entranced with Zoe, even without a DNA test. He gives her money and invites her into his home against the wishes of his wife and children. There is a good ending, but for me I didn't enjoy it.
What if your daughter is a stranger?
This is an incredible book, the foreshadowing was genius on every level. Kept you on edge, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Brilliantly written, with the plot executed perfectly.
Imagine you're a professor, you have a hectic schedule but, you're doing well for youself, and then you get the most unexpected of intrusions in your office and your life. A student declaring you to be her father. That's David's story. The student is Zoe. And she might be an angel, or just all round trouble. Is it just a student prank? Just confusion, a mix-up, or could it actually be the truth?
Zoe invites herself into his life, eventually into his home, through what might actually be well-spun lies. Though, there could also be some truths within them. Is she really who she claims to be? Caroline, David's wife, doesn't trust Zoe. But, David doesn't seem at all shaken. Not at first.
This book is one that I will recommend, it's one that will drive you insane just thinking about how there is no trust in David and Caroline's marriage. Even in the face of this 'Zoe situation', they each have their own scandalous secrets. Could their marriage survive the threat of Zoe? How will their children react to the news of a half sister? A virtual stranger. This book is a thrilling read, one of betrayals, disloyalty, old guilt brought to the surface and the pain of lost love, with deep mistrust running the whole way through. All in all, 'Girl Unknown' is a heavy read. It will exhaust you. You'll think it's just any family drama but then things get big......
Fans of the film Chloe (2009), starring Amanda Seyfried and Julianne Moore, will enjoy this one.
4 Stars only because the ending confused me little.
I received this book through NetGalley.
I absolutely love Karen Perry's books and this one is another brilliant read.
Thanks for the chance to read this
I was left feeling slightly disappointed by this book. The story line seemed to drag and wasn't the page turner id hoped it would be.
This is a cracking good read, which had me hooked from the beginning. David is a university lecturer with a wife and 2 children. One day a student comes to see him and tells him she believes she is his daughter, born of a passionate love affair before he was married. Zoe gradually infiltrates the family, playing one off against the other. But is she telling the truth? Is she really David's daughter? This is a true psychological thriller, which keeps you guessing to the very last page. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Girl Unknown is a very tense, dark and an extreme psychological rollercoaster which kept me captivated throughout.
A really intriguing story which got me hooked. The menace and slyness from Zoe are apparent early on and as the story unfolds, I was left wondering what was going to happen next. I love the way the characters are described and how their relationships with each other change as the book goes on. The twist at the end was very unexpected, very clever.
January has been SUCH a good book month for me! Book number six of the month, I'm very pleased to say, was just as good as those prior to it. Thank you very much to the team at Penguin Random House for my review copy of Girl Unknown by Karen Perry.
This story intrigued me from the outset- set in Ireland, a young girl, Zoë, turns up at the office of her history university tutor, convinced that he is her father. Upon further discussion it is indeed believed to be the case and David, one of our protagonists, finds himself under the strain of getting to know his long lost daughter and the affects that this has on his wife and other children. Needless to say, things start to appear odd and, amidst a Christmas Day suicide attempt from Zoë, the family find themselves with a new member. Caroline has her doubts about the sincerity of Zoë, believing that there is definitely more to her and her story than meets the eye. She finds that Zoë is cold and untrusting of her, manipulative and callous: at one point, Zoë causes herself physical harm and makes out to David that it was Caroline that made it happen. She is right, of course, not to trust Zoë and eventually, the lies and the cracks start to appear.
I don't think I've ever felt such strong emotions towards a single character before, much less the sheer dislike I felt towards Zoë. Her portrayal was fantastic, the antagonistic side of her blatant and well executed. Everything she did, without spoiling too much, irritated me on a ridiculous scale. I think it's pretty fair to say that it's been a long time since I've read a psychological thriller with such an obviously vindictive and conniving character. She eventually commences a relationship with David's best friend, a much older man, and moves out of the family home, despite both David and Caroline’s protests. The couple surprise David and Caroline and their children whilst away in France- and then everything changes and nothing can go back to how it was before.
I am not exaggerating when I describe this book as fantastic. I completely and utterly devoured it in a single sitting. Everything I look for when reading thrillers was readily there - it was full of intrigue, unpredictable and kept me hooked right until the - unexpected - twist at the end. The characters and the plot were both incredibly: every single character was one that I wanted to get to know on a deeper level and there were absolutely no plot holes at the end of the story. Everything I had wanted to know was answered in such an intriguing way. I enjoyed the shifting of character perspectives throughout the tale; this definitely allowed for a quick paced story and made it all the more “unputdownable.”
A fantastic tale with an ending that surprised even the most inquisitive, doubting crime fiction lover.
5/5.
It is safe to say this book messed with my mind, which all good psychological thrillers should. The story follows a typical Irish family and gives us multiple perspectives from the family members, although most chapters are from one of the parents perspectives. From David's point of view, who is the father of the family, we learn that a girl has entered his office and let him know that she thinks he is his daughter. From here the rest of the story develops, and as with many other psychological thrillers, I believe the best way to go into this story is by knowing as little as possible.
This book kept me guessing at every turn, just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next the plot would move in a totally different direction. I love when authors are able to keep you guessing until the very last page and this is definitely one of those reads. The tension that builds throughout is fantastic and keeps you wanting to read on until the early hours of the morning. This is the sort of book you could easily find yourself reading in one sitting, if you have the time.
As this book is told from multiple perspectives, one of the most important aspects for me was that the individual voices must sound different, and I think the authors achieved this well. The character crafting in this novel is wonderful, they all feel believable and individual. They are all fleshed out, and have multiple dimensions to their personalities, meaning that everyone has various different traits for the situations they find themselves in.
I have never read anything by either of the authors from this pen name, or any other titles by this pen name, but I hope to change this in the future. I highly recommend this book if you want a more domestic based psychological thriller.
When shy, retiring Zoë turns up at her professors office and confesses he may be her father, a whole whirlwind of questions, drama and uncertainty is unleashed. This book follows the family dynamics, marriage problems and dark history of the Connolly family. With their lives turned upside down by this new revelation, how will things play out?
I was expecting this book to be a tense edge-of-your-seat thriller and I was so excited for that. Which is why I was left disappointed. If you're looking for any kind of fast-paced mystery thriller, this book probably isn't for you. However, if I had gone into it with an open mind and no expectations, I would have enjoyed the exploration of the family dynamics as it felt like a British soap opera, rather than a tense mystery thriller novel. I didn't particularly like any of the characters, Zoë in particular, although I'm guessing that was kind of the point. The ending did manage to surprise me, but it didn't feel like an overly enjoyable climax to the story and I was left feeling sort-of disappointed and wanting something more from the book.
I would probably recommend reading this book if a slow-burning mystery is your style, as well as the drama of family dynamics and trouble-causing teens. But unfortunately as I went into this book with expectations, this one wasn't for me.
