This book was a really interesting read of something that could happen to any one of us and turn our lives upside down on a penny. I thought it was really well written and sensitive as well as realistic. There was also a reveal near the end to give the story a bit more of a twist. Recommended.
A book that will grab your heart strings and run. Alex isn't the same man he once was after an accident leaves him angry and unable to remember feelings from before. His twin brother Graeme and wife Molly are struggling through desperate to have the old Alex back but knowing it will never happen. I found the book easy to read, it switches from past to present leading up to the accident from Alex's perspective and the present day for Molly. No surprising twists of the plot, but a nice read.
A really good read, telling a difficult story, I was rooting for Molly and Alex the whole way through and didn't want the book to end.
I read this book in two days and found it enjoyable, it was an easy read that was easy to follow. I was interested in the book from the title and the description but found it quite predictable. Others found that there were twists and turns but for me, something was lacking. I kept reading on at a fast pace hoping that there would be a climax but it didn't really happen for me. It really is a lovely story though and I could relate well with the characters. I'm glad I read it but I don't think it's one I'll remember or talk about to others.
I'd like to think this is a positive review as it is a good book for lots of people to enjoy as I did. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read it
Beautiful, tragic and moving I really couldn't get enough of this book.
So beautifully written from start to finish and very clever going from past to present you really get a feel for the characters and it's like you know them and what they have been and what they are going through it's a great read which I very highly recommend.
I felt the author couldn’t quite make up her mind whether the novel was to be an insightful account of the impact of serious brain injury on a relationship, an “against the odds” romance or psychological thriller. In the end, for me, it didn’t really satisfy completely in any of these respects. The strongest element was definitely the description of the day-to-day toll on a relationship of caring for a partner who has been changed physically and psychologically by brain injury. The author did a good job of conveying Molly’s conflicted feelings - sympathy and love for her husband but also rage, regret and frustration at the position she finds herself in – and the mental and physical burden of caring for a person with limited hope of full recovery. There are some touching moments that seem grounded in the reality of living with someone whose symptoms can change from day to day, hour to hour: “Just when I think I have totally lost him, for a few precious moments I always find him again.” I found the sections detailing Alex and Molly’s relationship before his accident a little cheesy; everything was a bit too perfect – Alex himself, their wedding, their life together before his accident. However I appreciate the author was probably trying to build up a picture of what Molly has lost to explain why she wants to stick with Alex and hold on to the hope of an eventual recovery. I found the mystery introduced towards the end of the book rather underwhelming and the reveal a little predictable. To my mind the author came perilously close to “good twin/evil twin” cliché in the characterisation of Alex and his brother, Graeme.
My Husband the Stranger is a reflective novel that is engaging from the off. This novel was both fascinating and gripping.
My Husband the Stranger focuses on the characters of Molly and Alex. They meet, quickly fall in love and plan their lives. When a sudden accident causes a huge change in Alex's character Molly has to reassess her whole life and get to know her new husband that she didn't ask for. This novel flicks between modern day and past Molly and Alex and explores the lasting effects from Alex's accident.
Other characters are introduced including Alex's brother and the events build until Molly is forced to make a decision.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
Brilliant story that I could relate to on many levels. Molly and Alex's relationship changes following an accident so that Alex is no longer the man Molly married. I'm sure people whose spouses suffer from dementia or a stroke or many other conditions would relate to Molly's situation. I liked the use of dual narrators with Molly narrating the present and Alex narrating the past. This gave the reader a strong sense of what Molly had lost.. I felt for both characters.
oh my! just finished this book and i loved it. the characters of Alex, Graham and Molly and the struggles they had dealing with the aftermath of Alex's terrible accident and the lovely positive ending for all 3.
would thoroughly recomend this author.
This book was a great read, loved the story line and characters kept you gripped, would recommend this book
A brilliant read the story flows through present day and flashback really well
I liked the initial thought behind this book - a woman struggling with her husband after a brain injury. It didn't take it forward from the start of the idea and the ending felt neat, pat and flat.
