I loved this book. So twisted, dark and well-paced. I can't wait to read more by Alice Feeney. 5 stars.
The narrative follows the life of Amber Reynolds, who begins the novel in a coma and as the novel continues, it is written in first person by Amber, which for me was quite fascinating and unnerving at the same time.
The story jumps between the now and the past, but we learn that when Amber wakes up in a hospital,. she can’t move, can’t speak and she can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. For Amber, she is unable to remember what happened, but she suspects her husband had something to do with it.
I really enjoyed the moving between Alice in her paralysed present world and the revert back to the week before her accident, and mixed in with a series of events from her childhood.
This book is one of those books that i assumed that I would know exactly what was going to happen from the start. Oh how wrong I was. Alice Feeney has a way of drawing the reader in and keeping you hooked from the start. I had neve read a book like this before when i decided to pick this up so it introduced me to a new genre that I want to dive in to even more.
It is dark, creepy, suspenseful and definitely one I want to re-read down the line, even though i know how it ends. I will be picking up more Alice Feeney books
This was a good thriller. But something was missing for me. I found the pace too slow. And wish it was more of a page turner.
Thanks goes to net galley and the publishers for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review
Sometimes i lie by Alice Feeney.
A good read. Good characters. Great story just didn't like the then and now. A twister of a read. I read in one sitting. 5*.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this title. Unfortunately in this case I found it difficult to connect to the story. As I didn't completely finish this book I will not be publishing a review. We do not review uncompleted books on the blog, and again, thank you for sending through a review copy. Although this title didn't work for me, I do look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
So it's been all over Goodreads that this may be THE psychological thriller of 2017, so of course I was desperate to read it. No one shared any spoilers, but all commented on the ingenious plot twists and the brilliant ending, both sentiments I second. Although thrillers can be very same-y, this one did pull a few punches and surprised me. However, I do feel like I need a debriefing after reading it - I love unreliable narratives, but I also despise them because I want to know The Truth, something that you won't get from this book. For some this will be a positive, for others this will be a negative.
However, despite enjoying Sometimes I Lie I have given it three stars, simply because of certain bits of plot being pointless and unexplained. No spoilers but Edward? The parents? Read this book and you'll know what I mean. I feel like it just needed a bit of tidying up, because there were some plot devices that were weak when taken out of context.
The last thing I will say is that I loved the representation of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I was diagnosed with OCD myself when I was 10, and if I had a penny for every time a form of media has misunderstood it or mocked it, I'd be rich. In this book it was clear from the beginning what Amber had, and her obsessions and compulsions were realistic and ones I could relate to. More of this, please!
I really like the sound of this book and couldn't wait to read it. But I had a lot of others books that I need to read first, so this one took a back shelf. But it was well worth the wait.
This follows Amber Reynolds and she is in a coma. the story is told in three perspectives. Amber now, as she is in a coma, Amber as she was just a few weeks ago, and an 11-year-old's diary entries from years ago. Amber doesn't know how see ended up in a coma and the story's unravels it all.
Besides Amber the other main characters are Paul, Amber's husband, who she thinks is having an affair with her sister Claire. Claire is already married with twins.
I can't really go into much without giving something away, but the first part of the book was quite a good read, the last part was amazing! Their are plenty of twist towards the end and normally I am really good at guessing 'who done it' but this book filed me with surprise. I really couldn't book the book down as I was reading the last few chapters. Really gripping!
I think this might actually be one of my favourite reads. Brilliant. I can't wait to read more from Alice Feeney. I give this book 5/5 stars.
Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney was such a huge book with an impossible to ignore buzz about it earlier this year. I bit NetGalley's hand off when I realised it was up for request. Little did I know at the time that I would have to wait MONTHS before finding the time to read it. My FOMO* really kicked in when, stood with a very good friend at Harrogate during the Dead Good Reader Awards I happened to mention my suspicion that the lady stood to my left was the author, Alice Feeney. Well, my friend came over all giddy and went up to Alice immediately to introduce herself and commend her on Sometimes I Lie. Yup, FOMO sucks. I shall also mention that just behind Alice stood C. L. Taylor and to our right was the incredible Karen Sullivan of Orenda Books with one of my all-time favourite authors, Steph Broadribb! This is the only time in my life I will ever get to namedrop so please let me have my moment, will you?
But I digress. What I'm trying to get across (and probably failing) is that I was so very keen to read this book but time was against me. That was until I was caught waiting for what seemed like hours at the dentist without a book. And there, sat on my Kindle, was Sometimes I Lie. The responsible book blogger would have opted for their next January blog tour read, but I couldn't remember what was next so I went with what I wanted to read instead. Plus I was at the dentist and it felt like I was being kind to myself ahead of the agonising filling which was coming my way!
I was immediately suspicious of the main protagonist, Amber Reynolds. Before the reader turns to the first page they are made aware by the cover, by the blurb, that Amber sometimes lies. Now, I am a naturally suspicious person - not helped by mostly reading books about people doing bad, underhand things in order to save their own skin or to enhance their own enjoyment of life. So much so that when my husband was asked as a favour to take a couple of items of clothing to a meeting he was attending overseas for a colleague, I asked him if he'd checked the lining of the suit for any hidden drugs. Am I weird? Maybe. So I was on high alert, trying to work out what, in Amber's case, was true and what was not. I totally failed. All I did was over analyse everything instead of just relaxing and enjoying the book. My advice to you if you intend on picking up a copy of Sometimes I Lie is don't scrutinise every little thing - just enjoy it because it's a corking story.
Amber Reynolds is in a coma. She cannot move, cannot speak, cannot blink but she hears nearly everything that happens in her hospital room. I really enjoyed the way the author has provided the reader with three different viewpoints; Amber's as she lies uncommunicative in her hospital bed, a look at the events leading up to the accident and diary entries from a somewhat sinister, unknown child 20 years or so ago. Amber cannot remember what happened to put her in the coma. She overhears conversations which confirm she was in a car accident but she was the only victim. So until Amber wakes up and remembers, the incident will remain a mystery.
Chock full of twists that seem to come out of nowhere and leave you wondering 'how did that happen?', or 'gosh, I really didn't see that coming!', this is a complex psychological thriller which leaves the reader feeling both a little mystified but also fully satisfied. I loved the character of Amber, even when she was doing odd, unexplainable things. I was still rooting for her. I did manage to work out one aspect of the book about half way through but until my suspicions were confirmed, I did frequently doubt myself.
Would I recommend this book? I would. Fans of the unreliable narrator will adore this twisty, turny read. I spent the entire time I was reading Sometimes I Lie wondering exactly how much I actually knew about Amber and her story. The answer in hindsight, 'not a lot!'. Complex, intricate, highly original and difficult to put down. I can't wait to read more from Alice Feeney.
Four stars out of five.
*FOMO = Fear of Missing Out
I chose to read and review an eARC of Sometimes I Lie. The above review is my own unbiased opinion.
I have always liked the unreliable narrator slant to a book so thought I would enjoy this. I did but only to a certain extent. I had too many "really?" moments for five stars. Overall its entertaining stuff if you are looking for twists. I know it will be very popular with thriller readers and I will recommend it wholeheartedly - just not particularly for me.
I'd hoped this would be more of a literary thriller than crime fiction. I think it's more suited to fans of the latter. It was enjoyable and easy to read - and filled with lots of twists that will keep crime fans happy.
This book left me really confused but surprisingly enough, I still really liked it. Usually unreliable narrators in thrillers don't really do it for me but this book was different. Right from the beginning, you know Amber Reynolds is a liar but you don't really know to what extent. Is she telling a few white lies or is she a full blown liar? After I finished the book, I still didn't know the extent of her lying. A lot of this book is left sort of open-ended/unsolved and that did niggle me a bit but I still loved all the twists and turns this book had. The ending did really confuse me so I went searching online for people's opinions and there are so many different interpretations, it's crazy! I wonder if there will be a sequel. Part of me wants a sequel but then again maybe it's better left unsaid.
This book is a proper psychological thriller that will more than likely completely floor you. I found bits a tad slow and other bits to be a little too obvious but overall, it gets 4 stars from me because it's a great read. I would read more by Feeney and I would definitely recommend this book to those who feel like going for a crazy ride.
This book must have one of the shortest blurbs but one of the most intriguing, When I saw this book I instantly knew that I wanted to read it, there so much mystery in that blurb – I wanted to know why she was in a coma, why her husband didn’t love and what she lied about and if these lies were the reasons she was in a coma.
For a debut novel this absolutely fantastic, very absorbing, gripping and has you on the edge of your seat the whole way through, I truly am excited to see what this very talented writer is going to come up with next.
I am not going to write anything about the story as i think it will take some of the allure away. All you need to know is that you will be trying to second guess what is going and trying to reveal the truth. There are so many twists and turns in this book,if you are anything like me when I got to the plot twist I had to read it a few times to get my head round it.
This novel was dark, gritty and a great mystery/thriller novel.
'My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:
1. I'm in a coma
2. My husband doesn't love me any more.
3. Sometimes I lie.
The first lines of this book set the scene for a really gripping and confusing story. Amber is in a coma. We hear stories of Now;Then around Christmas 2016 and Before - the autumn of 1991.
As the story unfolds we find out more about Amber and her life, but it also becomes more confusing as imagination and deception are woven until we are unsure of who is who and who is telling the truth.
I really enjoyed the premise of the book and loved the different voices. I did found that it rushed at the end which could have been because I wanted to find out but felt that a real strength of the book was in Alice Feeney's writing which stretched the tension so I was on edge all the time. At the end this was not so apparent. But a great, unusual read.
At the beginning of ‘Sometimes I Lie’ by Alice Feeney, Amber is in a coma. What happened to her and why she is there, is told in three strands – a series of flashbacks of the previous few days, her childhood, and her trapped-in view of life from her hospital bed. ‘I’ve been returned to my factory settings as a human being, rather than a human doing.’
I’m not sure how to describe this book. It starts off as a study of young women, sisters and friends, and turns into a pacey psychological thriller. At times I forgot the title of the novel, a timely reminder that Amber may be an unreliable narrator. What starts off as a puzzle turns into a sprint, as a mystery visitor to Amber’s hospital bed may be trying to drug her. Her husband is being questioned by the police, it is days before her parents visit, and her sister and husband are arguing at her bedside.
Amber is a radio presenter with a touch of OCD, her repetitive checking of things increases as she is stressed. There are problems at work, her husband keeps disappearing, and an old boyfriend turns up out of the blue.
The plotting is tight, it has to be as there are many disguised clues and un-mentioned facts which only come to light at the end. The twist, when it came, was disorientating and curiously it made me disconnect from Amber’s predicament.
A difficult book to classify.

First of all I would like to thank netgalIery for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
What can I say about this book it's amazing one of my top ten for 2017.
The storyline is different to anything I have read before the storyline was brilliant.
I didn't guess what was going to happen at all i couldn't put the book down
Brilliant book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I requested this book because I found the premise exciting, fresh and new, and wow it delivered. It follows Amber Reynolds, who's in a coma but she doesn't know how she got there. Written in first-person there's three strands of narrative:
* Amber while she's in the coma. Even though she can't see anything, through her we eavesdrop on the conversations around her. This is more intriguing than it sounds, and each person who visits her, from her husband to her sister, is far from trustworthy.
* Then you have flashbacks from a couple of weeks ago leading up to the 'accident'.
* excepts from her childhood diary are sprinkled and we see how she became the strange and peculiar person she is today.
There's so many twists and turns, I stopped guessing. And that ending had my jaw on the floor. This is a fun read, one you'll want to talk about and share.
I was sent a copy of this in return for my independent honest review.
Just when you thought psychological thrillers cannot get any better, then this comes along!
Amber is in a coma and doesn't know how she became in this state.
She is aware of everything going on around her
She can hear everything going on around her, unfortunately she is unable to let anyone know this.
She is no longer sure who she can trust. As a reader you are not sure she can be trusted either or is even a reliable narrator!
This book is full of twists and turns which keep you constantly in suspence and at the height of tension more often than not. It is difficult to tell who tells lies. An ideal thriller.
An excellent fast paced book that is difficult to put down. The characters are well created and appear scarily real.
This read will keep you thinking for many weeks to come. A must read for all who love scary plots that mess with your head and have the time to not put it down until the end.
Great, unique storyline, brilliant characters, excellent twists .... highly recommended.
