Brilliant description of what it is like to be in a coma . Very complex story and dragged out a bit longer then needed
Plot: The synopsis gives little away aside from:
1. I’m in a coma.
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore.
3. Sometimes I lie.
And I think that speaks well enough for the book so it doesn’t give much away, so I’ll leave it at that!
My thoughts: This was a brilliant psychological thriller, and if you’ve just read my above reviews, you’ll know I love it when I can’t figure out whether the narrator is telling me the truth or not, so this makes a great book for me. I imagine it’s difficult writing a book with the character always in the same present situation – in a coma. As such, it’s a slow builder but full of suspense and anticipation. Admittedly it’s not one that stuck in my head for a long time afterwards, but it is no doubt definitely a good one.
A good modern thriller. I found it held my interest to the end and I couldn't put it down. There is a brilliant twist which I didn't see coming.
Gripping read from the start. Real page turner! Highly recommended!
I found this book really odd and wouldn't recommend it. The narrator was really awful and I didn't bond with her at all.
“My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:
1. I’m in a coma.
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore.
3. Sometimes I lie.”
Amber can hear everything going on around her as she lies in hospital, in a coma. She was in an accident, but she can’t remember what happened. All she knows is that she’s sure her husband has something to do with it. As Amber catches snippets of conversation around her, she starts to regain her memory, with some shocking revelations.
No more can be said on the plot without giving things away, so let’s move on. Basically, this book was confusing. Alice doesn’t know who to trust – including herself – and so we’re given quite a lot of clashing information. Is her husband nice or was he involved in some way? What is up with her sister? Why does she go to work every day at a job she hates surrounded by people she doesn’t like? Are her parents dead or alive? Who knows what is going on? Not me, that’s for sure. It does come together in the end, but even then what really happened is unclear, which I guess is a pretty effective way to finish a book but I didn’t like it. I wanted to know exactly what happened and, unfortunately, this book doesn’t give us that.
Overall, it’s a good story. There are a mix of intriguing characters, and a very twisty plot – certainly psychologically thrilling, just not conclusive enough for me.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is undoubtedly a twisty and exciting book. I wanted to know what had happened to Alice, what the issues were with Claire and with Paul and what the hell was going on in the background. There were a good few twists along the way which made me recalculate everything that had gone before - particularly one about three-quarters of the way through, at which point I had to go back to the beginning and skim through what had gone before, just to try to get my head round it! I must admit though I was a bit confused by the ending and there were one or two questions still outstanding besides that. However, I was really gripped throughout and I still think it is a great book.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for the ARC of Sometimes I Lie.
Amber is in a coma but she is aware of what is going on around her, the problem is she can't remember how she got there or communicate with anyone. Her visitors conversations in the background start to trigger memories. What follows is a crazy amount of twists and turns which got pretty scary at one point!
Great book, it kept me in suspense that's for sure.
4 stars for this one.
The blurb:

3. Sometimes I lie.
Wtf have I just read? This book takes you on a twisty journey and just as I think I've got it all straight - BOOM - there's another big twist that I really didn't see coming. Fabulous! I will be thinking about this book for quite a while and I will have to read it again just to get my mind round what happened 5*

when i first started to read this book i was hooked in by the first page the story is told in the past, present and before the Accident, you have Amber Reynolds who is in a coma following an accident she is narrating the book telling the story trying to work out what happened to her and why shes in a coma we also get to know what her childhood was like and her friendship with her friend Taylor and what her life was like growing up, also we have the before where she takes us to what happened leading up to the accident and her job at a radio Station a job she does not like and a co-host who does not like her,
we get to meet her husband Paul and sister Claire who are both at the heart of the story and visiting Amber at the hospital,
i do not want to give to much away about the plot of this book but the story is gripping and tense at times there is a lot of twists and turns and at times i was shocked! but there was a few times in the story where i was confused because some parts was hard to follow " i think if somethings was made more clear then it would of been better" but i loved the story i could not put it down i had to stay up late to keep reading until i got to the last word on the page, its an amazing book and i will re-read this again because i loved it its got the style of Gone Girl about it the publishers and Netgalley for my Copy
This is one of those books I'll be telling all my friends about. It is totally gripping, keeps you guessing and has an unexpected twist at the end.
I was initially drawn to this book by its tagline – I am in a coma, my husband doesn't love me any more, sometimes I lie. I love stories with lies and deceit, they always have strong psychological turmoil between the characters.
The story is written over three timelines – Now, whilst Amber is in a coma – Then, the days leading up to Amber's accident – and Before, written as diary entries from 1991. The diary entries give a deeper background of the lead characters, how their minds work and why they have become disturbed complex people. Amber writes as much as she can think about in her diary as a child but if she can't express herself she writes three facts for the day. In the present, while Amber is in a coma, she carries on with this three facts style in her mind and that's how we get the tagline on the book cover.
The story becomes very complex, not confusing or muddled but you do need to pay attention, and much of the scary part is while Amber is in her coma and she hears everything around her. She can't yet remember what happened to her but she suspects her husband has something to do with her accident, she doesn't trust him and feels frightened when he visits. She's not convinced Claire, her sister, has her best interests at heart and so desperately needs to remember what's happened to her. There are some sinister characters, her ex-boyfriend who has access to her as he works in the hospital, and a little girl who Amber doesn't think is real keeps paying her mind a visit. Who is Jo? Why is it so important to see Madeleine off the radio show that Amber works on? and what about the recognition of Madeleine's house? Such a lot keeps your mind flicking back and forth wondering what the relevance is of a new piece of the story.
As psychological thrillers go, this is one of the best I've read. Some of the phrases used are so very eloquent and really describe a situation well, paints a picture with words. This is one I will certainly recommend and look forward to more by Alice Feeney.
The story begins in the present day and is about Amber, who we soon discover is lying in a hospital bed in a coma after being involved in an accident, she can hear everything that is going on around her but she can't wake up. The tale is told in three timelines: Now, Then and Before and skips frequently between each one.
This story has more twists and turns than a roller coaster ride and just when you think you know what's going on, it turns in a different direction. There was a point in the book that had a total WTF moment and had me skipping back a few pages to see how I'd missed the switch, I was quite confused and it took a while for the penny to drop and realise the author had very cleverly written it to make the reader think just that.
This book was difficult to put down and it's hard to believe that this is the authors debut novel. Thank you to HQ for the approval to read this ARC, I will post my review on Goodreads and Amazon UK & US.
I really enjoyed this book, particularly because I thought I'd got it all worked out then along came the wtf moment and I had to reevaluate everything I'd read. If I get time, I will re-read this book with the knowledge I now have. For the unforeseen twist I am awarding 5stars. Well done
Brilliant psychological thriller, along the lines of "'girl on a train'. Could not put this book down.
The title "Sometimes I Lie," grabs the readers attention from the outset as we wonder just what the protagonist is lying about. This intrigue continues throughout as secrets and lies are revealed although at times I became a bit confused as there are so many twists and turns. Nonetheless it is a very well crafted novel which will appeal to fans of psychological thrillers.
Now Amber has OCD and notices when things move in her environment and finds it a stress reliever to put things right and repeat her daily patterns.
It would seem that she has a lot of stress to cope with as we read her diary and hear about her job and familial relationships.
But.
It’s Xmas Day when the book starts and Amber is in hospital in a coma after a car accident. She also has bruises around her neck from hand s as though someone tried to strangle her and on her legs as though she was raped. But who did this? Was it her husband?
Amber is awake under the coma and we read her thoughts. She thinks that she never drives – especially her husband’s sports car – but she crashed through hi windscreen through not wearing a seatbelt when the car hit a tree. No one else was in the car.
But as the book progresses we hear different versions of her story told by Amber, who admits that she lies.
What is the truth of her childhood? Was it as portrayed in the diary entries? And who is Claire, because the child writing the diaries was an only child. So how can she be her sister?
So reality changes until we read the end and we are surprised by what we find out.
A very well written story that you can’t put down until you what happened and who did what and yes, we are shocked at times by what we learn. Excellent.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I tried a couple of times to get into this story and gave up, feeling like I wasn't being drawn in as I would have expected to. I was recommended to persevere with it; that it was a slow starter. I am humble enough to agree that it was worth sticking with.
Sometimes the plot could get confusing as we flit back and forth from Amber's childhood to the present day, with the title firmly in your head you never know whether to believe what you are reading.
The ending felt ambiguous to me and left me with various questions. I wish it had been clearer. However, a very intense read. I'm glad I didn't give up on this book.
Surprisingly entertaining thriller. I did know what was coming but the idea was still clever and plotted well.
This book held my attention and kept me reading to the end, when I was left wondering what it had all been about, but that is what it is meant to do.It has so many twists and turns that you have to take time after it's finished to go through in your mind what really happened.None of the characters are sympathetic,so you feel they deserve their fate.
Brilliant read - so many twists and turns its hard to give much of a review without giving too much away!
Amber is in a coma... she has no idea what happened to her and she had no idea who she can trust. Amber has flashes on memory and can hear what is going on around her BUT can she put the pieces of her story together?
There were so many twists and turns in the plot which kept me reading late into the night - I had quite a few moments where my intake of breath in shock was so loud it woke my husband!
