While this book was good and easy to read I thought the ending let it down a bit when they suddenly all met up again and the chain of events when that happened. Saying that I did read it quite quickly so it had me hooked early on as was a good idea for a book and unique in that respect.
I struggled with this book and reading other reviews it was probably just me . I felt overwhelmed by who was who and what they had done. I tried several times but just could not get into it.
Well written and a good plot. Questions how well we ever really know each other. And that even the best of friends can only bring themselves to tell as much as they want each other to know! A good plot, not a 5 Star but still enjoyable.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Four life long friends get together and decide to write an anonymous letter sharing a secret from their life, to be read out loud between them over four nights. How well do you really know your friends. There is a fifth letter written that was supposed to have been burnt but was found and read by one of the friends. The letter divulged hidden resentment by one of the four. Who wrote it and who was it about. I loved this story and each and every one of the characters. Gripping from first to last. Can't highly recommend enough.
A really good book. Fours friends, all of them have a secret, but how well do they really know each other? Once I started reading it, I was hooked.
'The Fifth Letter,' by Nicola Moriarty was an enjoyable, if fairly standard fair of its genre. Joni, Deb, Eden and Trina, best friends since school, are now adults, tied by work, families and responsibility. Joni is desperate to reconnect with her friends and finally commits them all to some time away together in a cottage. During the course of their stay they each agree to write an anonymous letter in which they share their deepest, darkest secrets to be read out in turn. However, unexpectedly a fifth letter comes to light, found charred and burned in the fireplace after an attempt to destroy it fails. As its contents come to light, so a long held grudge is once again set in motion as the women attempt to find out who the writer of 'The Fifth Letter' is!
I liked the book; the premise was interesting, but for me the plot wasn't really secure enough to hold the story together.
I really liked this book by Nicola Moriarty i do recommend it.
I really enjoy discovering a new author and Nicola Moriarty is no exception. I loved this book and all that it entailed. Highly recommended.
This book tells it as it is. Not everything between friends is always moonshine and roses just like in any other relationship there are things that you love or hate about your friend/partner. When Joni came up with the idea to write the letters in secret I thought to myself, "What are you 12?"
This was a great story that brought all the feelings the friends had towards each other to the forefront. I am not a great believer in always being such close friends with the people that were with you in school. I feel that you have to grow in your relationships with other people as well, relationships change and interests change.
The identity of the writer of the fifth letter remains a secret until the end.
All four of the friends are likeable characters, and all very different. Nicola Moriarty captures this very well.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are all my own and completely unbiased and I would recommend this book to all lovers of women's fiction.
Thank you to Netgalley and Penquin UK for the copy.
Enjoyed the story it a good chill down book would recommend to my friends
This was my first book by Nicola Moriarty and I have heard great things! I loved that this book surprised me and constantly had me changing my mind as to who wrote the fifth letter. I read this book within a couple of days because I couldn't put it down! At times I found it a little confusing when it would switch between the past and the present but that may have been because of the layout of the e-book version. I would definitely recommend this book!
Unfortunately I didn't get chance to read this book as there was an issue with the system that wouldn't allow me to download this. However, I've heard great things and will be buying the book soon!
In a perfect world we would be able to tell our friends and family our secrets and not be judged.
In a perfect world. This is not one of those I'm sorry to say. Very thought-provoking book.
This was a thoroughly readable, enjoyable book. A novel telling as a confession to a catholic priest. It was well written and full of energy. All the characters were believable. It used a backwards forwards movement across time in a very realistic way
An incredible novel about 4 women -Joni, Deb, Trina and Eden who have been friends since school and how they reconnect on an annual break away. Unfortunately one has a terrible secret and when they decide to write anonymous letters exposing private secrets and thoughts, things go radically wrong and an additional letter comes into the mix when one girl changes her mind about exposing her secret! How the tale unfolds makes for a great read. Is friendship the same for all the group is at the centre of the story.
This is the story of four girls who meet at high school and their journey into adulthood and beyond. They promise no matter what that each year they will have a holiday together.
As their lives change with marriage, children and work commitments the annual holiday becomes harder to arrange. Joni arranges this years holiday she's feels the group are drifting apart and they're not as close as they used to be, to try get them back on track after a night of wine and laughter they decide to share one secret each, they will each take turns typing out their secret then each night they will pick one and discuss it.
After everyone has gone to bed one of the girls decides she can't expose her secret so types another letter to replace it. She then waits for a convenient time when she can destroy it this turns out to be a few days later. Joni unable to sleep that night gets up she spots the charred crumpled paper and retrieves it. She realises its a letter filled with hatred and the will to harm one of the girls.
Deciding she has to find out who wrote The Fifth Letter Joni goes to confession chats with Father O'Reilly trying to figure it all out. Will she find out who wrote it before the person hurts any of the group?
Great read I really enjoyed it altho I found towards the end it began to drag a bit think it could have been condensed a bit better still an amazing read definitely recommend it.
What starts as a girl’s weekend away ends up as being a very cathartic experience for them all.
After playing a game of ‘Truth or Dare’, these 30 years old plus women , who are very drunk at this point, decide to each write a letter telling a secret that none of the others know about. This despite their being friend since the beginning of secondary education.
What follows is that many truths come out, and they learn that what they thought they knew about each other was not always correct.
This is a chick-lit novel with lots of secrets and a bit of mystery thrown in. It's hard to resist comparing Nicola Moriarty's book to her sister's books. If I didn't know the author, I could probably say it was written by Leanne Moriarty - similar genre and writing style - from the beginning we know there's a shocking revelation to come and we are 'led up the garden path', with lots of secrets and red herrings on the way, until the shocking truth is revealed right at the end. Although, it's not actually that shocking or unexpected at all. Overall, an enjoyable, quick and easy read.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
Such a great book - I read the entire thing today!
A story of 4 friends on holiday all keeping secrets, I thought I had it sussed (I did get a few things!) but I ended up being surprised.
Huge fan of this book, one of my favourites this year.
