Freya has not been the perfect mother; distracted by her own extra-marital affair, she feels she has not been checking in with her teenage daughter, Zoe, as much as she should. One day, when Zoe goes missing, Freya panics. The only way to bring her daughter back would be to tell the truth, but when your whole is built on secrets and lies, telling the truth could destroy everything….

Never Out of Sight, the new psychological thriller by Louise Stone (a pseudonym for Charlie Phillips) is a riveting, heart-pounding, downright delicious reading experience. I finished this novel easily in one sitting. It became a mix between a classic domestic noir (think The Couple Next Door) and some of the “girl” novels that have swept the book world the past few years (in the aspect of the unreliable female lead). I could not put this book down.

The novel opens with Freya, a successful college professor, in the midst of an affair with her graduate student. When Zoe, Freya’s teenage daughter goes missing, she calls the police (and her husband) and instantly is forced to lie. After all, if she tells the truth, her marriage- and her job- would be on the line. What harm could come from another little, white lie? Freya narrates a majority of the novel as she desperately searches for her daughter while trying to contain her own secrets.

Stone is able to create some seriously complex characters and, to be honest, I hated them all, but surprisingly, that made me want to continue reading even more! It was like watching a train wreck. Each character and their situation became more complicated than the last and I found myself riveted by their mess.

The novel builds and its grand finale was completely unexpected. I was left in complete shock by the final pages.

If you are a fan of psychological thrillers and want a novel that will suck you in, then look no further, I highly recommend this one. I gave it a 5/5 on Goodreads.

Thanks to the publisher (Digital HQ) and the author for allowing me access to a digital copy via Netgalley; it was my pleasure to provide an honest review.

Freya narrates the story where her sixteen year old daughter, Zoe, goes missing. Searching for her unveils the lies and secrets of each family member. Freya's refusal to believe information about
Zoe that is discovered, and laying blame elsewhere, along with her continued bad choices, turns my sympathy
into annoyance. With the exception of DI Simon Carter, I found all the characters to be flawed.
In this case, writer Louise Stone made it work that there was no "good guy" character.
The story took off at page one, kept me in suspense with lots of twists and turns throughout.
Part of the ending was a little disappointing for me. The part with Freya and Zoe,
I would have liked a different finale.
Overall I found this book riveting, suspenseful, very well written and recommend it to others.

Never out of Sight went a weird way for me. I started out thinking I would hate it (the characters are divisive) by the middle I was so absorbed I barely looked up then at the end I was all What? Really? Blimey.

So we have a missing daughter, parents at loggerheads, a mother with questionable judgement (I seriously wanted to slap her at times) and a well written twisty tale with a clever ending that attacks the senses and lingers once you are done.

Never Out of Sight is one of those novels where you may well dislike everyone you meet within the pages but it doesn’t matter because you simply have to know what happens to them anyway. The more you read the more gripped you will be and the nicest thing is it is not entirely predictable which when you read a lot in this genre is very refreshing.

Louise Stone is a smart writer – addictive prose, great at misdirection and very good at characters, this is a twisty tale that is riveting and occasionally thought provoking and as such very appealing. I enjoyed it very much.

Recommended for fans of domestic noir and twisted tales.

Brilliant. A gripping page turner that shocks right up to the last page. There are so many twists and turns in the plot. The suspense builds and builds and I found this book hard to put down. I want to read it again to see what clues I missed.

Clear your afternoon if you're going to read this, you won't be able to put it down. Fast paced story of love, lies and family with a surprising ending.

A bizarre read from the first page to the last. Seemed to lack a real sense of urgency but that may be the author's intention, focussing instead on the twisted detail of the plot.
