This is a really excellent thriller that I found hard to put down at times. There was plenty of twists and turns throughout the book.
An old man living in run down area with all the other houses sold except his own. He doesn’t want to sell up and he swears that people are trying to break into his house and intimidate him into selling. He says he’s going to shoot the next person who comes into his house……… possibly even a police officer trying to help him.
Meanwhile a car crashes into a van full of prisoners one of whom turns up dead in a very public way and the other is just on the run. Also a woman unknown is scamming elderly people out of their hard earned cash
Jessica has a lot on her plate with all these cases and Bex living with her and Adam still fighting for his life.
As always with the Jessica Daniel series I really enjoyed this book and I was hooked until the very end. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest views.
Kerry Wilkinson never fails to satisfy my thirst for reading, Credible characters and story line, she is one of my favourite authors!
In true gritty Kerry style this book does not disappoint.
A clever start which pulled me in and then kept me gripped to the very end.
Anyone who reads this genre would not be disappointed.
My thanks go to the author, publisher and Netgalley in providing me with a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This is already the 11th book in the Jessica Daniel series, and honestly another brilliant read! In this book Jessica has to catch escaped prisoners while helping an innocent pensioner with a problem. The manner in which she negotiates her non-existing personal live, with her work and the gruesomeness of her job is inspiring and makes me wish the next one is not far off!
Absolutely fantastic, and just at good (if not better as the previous titles!)
Niall O'Brien is in his seventies and a war veteran and is holding out from selling his home to developers. He's been telling the police that someone has been coming into his house and moving things although they can find no evidence. Then he takes matters in his own hands and it looks like he's killed a police officer. DI Jessica Daniels is investigating the escape of two prisoners - their van was attacked and they were released in broad daylight. Then one of the escapees is found dead. Why would he be helped to escape only to be killed the following day? Then the wife of the prisoner's previous employer is also found murdered - is there a gang war starting up in Manchester. On top of these investigations Jessica is trying to help her friend Bex as she meets up with the mother who abandoned her four years ago, she's trying to work out what her relationship with her colleague Archie is as well as continuing to cope with the fact her fiancée is still in a coma. I haven't read any of this series previously but this didn't detract from my enjoyment of this book. Great story, interesting characters and I will definitely be reading the rest of this series.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and Kerry Wilkinson for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I have been a huge fan of Kerry Wilkinson since his first experimental book in October 2011 with the Jessica series. His dry and dark humour crack me up. Right from the start Jessica has been a strongly defined character. I feel as though I know her et al personally. She's a strong minded, intelligent woman who is intent on solving a crime; often flaunting rules and regulations which amuses and shocks me equally. She drives me nuts at times and I want to scream, "Don't do it Jessica," but she ignores me. The themes used in all the books are interesting and well thought out. Not one of them has been a disappointment. I sometimes wonder if Kerry has time to eat, sleep and watch football these days as he's so prolific. Please keep writing. A born story teller. Thank you to Kerry for the entertainment and intrigue over the years. Also Net Galley and his publisher for permitting me to read it.
iall O'Brien is a veteran living on the edge of a run-down estate, refusing to sell his house to developers. He's the only remaining resident, alone and frightened by a series of break-ins. He's been threatening to shoot the next intruder but he can't be serious . . . what if the next person through the door is a police officer trying to help?
Elsewhere, on a bright Manchester morning a vehicle screeches across a junction and wipes out a prison van. Two prisoners run for it, leaving the police to track them down.
They don't have long to wait. Hours later, one of the escapees is hanged from a motorway bridge. Was he broken out solely to be killed, or is there something deeper going on?
Meanwhile, someone's conning pensioners out of their savings and there are rumours that the bare-knuckle British middleweight title fight is coming to the city. DI Jessica Daniel fears finding herself in the middle of an all-out war, not knowing that the biggest threat might come from a frightened pensioner.
What can I say? - excellent, as always.
I liked the main character Jessica and the setting of Manchester I worked there briefly many years ago.I enjoyed the dialogue it seemed authentic and the story, it can be read as a stand alone, I haven't read any of the other books in this series although I don't know how I've let them pass me by I would like to start reading them now and would recommend this one as a good story, well worth a read. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Nothing but trouble by kerry Wilkinson is a mystery and thriller read.
DI Jessica Daniel has to protect the streets of Manchester from escaped prisoners- and those trying to hunt them down. Niallo O'brien is a veteran living on the edge of a run- down estate, refuses to sell his how to developers.
Really good read with good characters. I liked the story and the characters. Little slow. 4* . I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.
These books in the Jessica Daniel series just get better and better and what a way to start this one. There is so much happening in and around Manchester and DI Jessica Daniel certainly has her work cut out tying to piece together what is going on and who is to blame. Jessica is feisty, sarcastic, straight talking but she also has a soft side to her nature and this became apparent when she took in a homeless young girl who had nothing going for her.. They have become great friends despite the age gap and Jessica loves having Bex around . I can't recommend this book highly enough it is a brilliant read.
Excellent police procedural peopled by fascinating characters, none more brilliantly written than the protagonist Jessica Daniels. Fierce, honest, outspoken and very real, the novel starts with her death! As I hadn't read all the previous books, I was unaware of her back story, but, trust me, I am going to read them. Beautifully plotted with a cliff hanger ending; I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
Wow, are we really at book 11? Definitely doesn't feel like it as this series is just as fresh as when it started. I have read a fair few series where, as time goes on, it appears that the author has got fed up or run out of ideas and that comes across in the quality of the work. This is definitely not the case here though, which is why I am a little upset that, once again, the author ends on a cliffhanger. This is a particular bug bear of mine, something I really hate. If an author is good, I will buy the next in the series, you really don't need to resort to such tactics... Don't get me wrong, the main story is completed within this book, we just have a something that happens at the end that I am not sure was wholly necessary to be in this book... OK. rant over, it's not losing the book any stars but I have to be honest and speak my mind in my reviews.
Blooming heck, this book starts off packing punches. I really had to muster every single ounce of self control not to cheat and go looking at the end of the book. After reading the opening, I was also screaming at the author but, at the same time, holding on to the confidence and trust in him that I have built up in the 6 or so years that I have been reading his books.
There are two main threads in this book. The escape of two prisoners being transported, this incident having the potential to spark of a gang war, and the alleged persecution of a pensioner in his own home. Jessica is trying to handle both but it is obvious which one gets the majority of her attention. As if this wasn't enough, Bex's mother has made contact and wants to meet with her. Oh and there's Jessica's ongoing relationship with a colleague whilst her fiance still lies in a coma. Throw all that into the mix and you have, once again, one heck of a ride.
This book is full of all the usual things you'd expect from the author. Manchester is described well enough to again be a character in its own right, it is also an integral part of the story. Banter is brilliant, old friends continue to develop nicely, the new ones we are introduced to here and well described and fit in well. Interaction between everyone feels natural and comfortable. Plotting is tight as always and delivered with perfect pacing. The book held my attention so well that I read through the whole thing in a day pausing only when I really had to. Well, I had to know... you know ;)
All in all, another brilliant offering from one of my favourite authors. Cliff hanger ending aside, I will be waiting with baited breath for more from Jessica and crew.
My thanks go to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Well well, Book 11. And I have read and loved everyone of them. Jessica Daniel has become one of my favorite female fictional detectives.
You just can't help but enjoy these books. You could probably get away with reading it as a stand alone, but if you are anything like me, then you need to read them right from book 1, it really helps with the background of the characters, and you feel more for them as their life progresses. So if you haven't read any of these books, then may I suggest this is the series you get stuck into this year.
I also love how all Kerry's books are set in and around Manchester. I always enjoy a book when I know some of the places that are mentioned. I feel it add's to the visions I have while reading.
So Jessica is back, and as usual nothing is ever just simple for her. She is having to deal with a prison van that has been hijacked and the prisoners freed, where are they, who has done it and the big question is why?
Along with this Jessica learns of a neighbour who has been conned out of some of his saving, and soon finds out that others locally have suffered the same. Another case for Jessica to investigate.
Jessica really seems to get involved in everything that is thrown her way, she is a brilliant and believeable character. I also enjoy the banter as well as the serious side of her and her work colleagues.
I really can't wait for more from this series.
And I have to say, another book that ends with you wanting the next one NOW.
