Blink is K.L. Slater's debut thriller and boy was it a good one. Three years ago Toni had moved to a new home in a new neighbourhood trying to start a new life. Her husband was killed in an accident while in the armed forces and she is still dealing with the grief. Toni is not able to talk about him or the accident either. She is brought into a group at her new school by a teaching assistant, but also has private sessions after school. It is one of those session that Toni is late picking her up and when she gets there, no one but the custodian is at the school. Toni’s five-year-old daughter Evie disappeared from school. She has not been found, but Toni can feel that Evie is still alive. How can she make the police and others believe her. Will she be able to speak up for herself?
This story pulled me in from the beginning of the book. It is written in a dual timeline so we hear the story of what happened three years ago, and what is happening now from the viewpoint of a patient who has had a stroke and is trying desperately to let everyone know she is still in there and trying to come back to them. There were several characters that we meet through both Evie and Toni, some I liked, others not so much. Harriet Watson, the teaching assistant was evil. She said things that were untrue to both Toni and Evie and constantly picked away at their self-esteem. I had no idea who had Evie. Everytime I suspected someone, I changed my mind. With the final twists in this story, my jaw dropped. This was a great psychological thriller and can't believe this was a debut story.
Great story!
Blink is a story about a a boy who has seen more than his fair share of abuse. It’s about him meeting someone who has seen just as much if not more abuse than he.
It’s about them coming together for a short period of time and how he will fight to help right the wrongs done to both of them as well as his mother and sisters.
Having a good sort out of my kindle and came across this one that sounded thrilling from the blurb. Unfortunately it did nothing for me. A rather weak story with a convoluted plot line. Not sorry I missed giving a more timely review as I hate to be negative.
I enjoyed this book took me a while in her into the plot but then I was hook good characters one I did not like other were strong a few turns well written good book
** spoiler alert ** Interesting, and of course I Ickes the wrong Erwin so when that reveal twist came I was like WTF 😱😂 And the hospital story, the author made it seem like it was another character, another great twist.
The teacher aid, or whatever her position was, was a nasty character. Fancy picking on the poor little girl like that in class 😢 Really got into the story with this one👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Thank you so much for my ARC.
Great gripping read until the twist, this then became a rush to get to end of book and conclusion. The suspense and build up was fantastic, but as soon as it was known who the main protagonist was, I then pieced together the rest of the story. Great story just disappointed with ending.
One of my favorite reads in the last few months! Wow it was creepy and suspenseful and the twists and turns kept me guessing!
Blink is another standalone psychological thriller by KL Slater. Gripping and full of red herrings, twists and turns and thoroughly enjoyable.
This was a brilliant book that kept me guessing right from the start. More than once I thought I had worked out what was happening, but time and again I was wrong. Definitely recommend this book.
If you are looking for a story that will keep you guessing than look no further, Blink pulled me in from the very first chapter. With a creeping amount of tension and suspense. I loved the way the story has two timelines one set in the present day and one three years earlier along with a chapters told from different perspectives. Now even though that may sound like a lot of information I never once got confused it just left me so very curious as to what happened to Evie.
Toni is having a tough time of it and is trying to hold things together for the sake of her little girl Evie. There were times when I wanted to reach in and intervene and talk some sense into her. For me this is a sign of a great story one that easily makes me invested in the characters lives even if they do make mistakes.
I read this book over an afternoon as I just couldn't put it down! K.L. Slater has written a very twisty story with surprises that had me constantly changing my mind about the story itself and the characters. There are some interesting and suspicious characters within this book which left me with plenty of suspects to choose from.
Blink moves at a brilliant pace and left me eagerly turning the pages to see what would happen next!
With thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
A very interesting tale that held my attention all the way through. Great plot, twists and turns & the writing kept me hopping! Thanks for the opportunity with this ARC!
I'm really iffy on this one. The blurb is awesome and gripping. I was excited to start it. yet it took me four or five starts to get past the first few chapters. While the beginning is a nice intro, it just didn't catch my attention enough for me to sink into the book. The writing was well done, but the expectations from the blurb fell short.
K. L. Slater takes a reader on every parent's worse nightmare with the disappearance of their child:
Toni's life was turned upside down when her husband was killed in action. It has caused her to make some drastic changes in her life, some good and many bad ones. With her daughter Evie by her side she makes a move to a new city to try to start a new life but people notice there is something not right with Toni and question her ability to take care of Evie. When Evie disappears there are many suspects but everyone sees it as Toni's fault. Will she ever see her child again? As more time passes she tries to stay positive but everyone knows as more time passes the likelihood of Evie coming back alive gets smaller and smaller.
This book had everything that I was looking for in a psychological thriller, and as the premise on Goodreads says it actually does have a twist that you will not see coming. Trust me that does not happen very often and there are times when I question where the big twist was. Honestly, half way through this book I was like I have it all figured out and how it was going to play out but I was totally wrong. Slater does a great job of not only surprising you having so many possibilities that you're not sure which one is right.
Slater has a strong story telling aspect in this book and I really enjoyed they way she decided to tell the story with the present, Toni before and the teacher before. It can take a bit to lead to the actual abduction of Evie so it was maybe a bit drawn out but Slater needed to lay the groundwork. It also gives you a great overview of what led up to Evie's disappearance as well as the list of suspects for taking Evie and they all seem to have a motive that they would act on that sends your brain spinning in so many different scenarios.
Toni is very real character who is suffering from the loss of her husband and everything psychological and financial burdens that comes with that. The only Light in her life is Evie and as much as she tries to be a good mother, she struggles throughout the past portions of the book. The choices that Toni does make does make her hard to like at times but at the still time you feel so sorry for her that you understand her in a way.
This is the first book that I have read by Slater and it will not be the last. Slater has a great story telling ability that has set the bar really high with this book, so I'm really looking forward to finding another book by her.
Enjoy!!!
Bookouture and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Blink. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Toni Cotter is raising her daughter Evie alone, after her husband's death. Floundering, Toni tries to deal with her stress and anxiety with painkillers. After her mother convinces Toni to move closer, so she may be a source of support for both her daughter and granddaughter, a tragic event derails Toni's life. Will an unexpected clue give Toni a reason to hope or will she continue her decline into the pits of despair?
According to the many rave reviews of Blink, I feel like I should have enjoyed this book more than I did. Perhaps it is because I have read many psychological thrillers, but author K.L. Slater relied on too many writer tricks to twist the plot instead of a good story. With both perspective and time period changes, the book seems off balance most of the time. The final reveal is just thrown like a bomb, with no warning. Between unlikable characters and a weak plot, Blink just did not live up to the hype. For these reasons, I would not recommend Blink to other readers.
Oh my word , It's been a while since I read a psychological thriller that had me on the edge of my seat . Well this one certainly had. It was absolutely brilliant. Full of twists and turns . A superb storyline that will have you guessing until the final chapter . If you haven't already read this book and you're a fan of psychological thrillers this is a must read . A massive massive 5 stars from me.
Think I have to say this was one of my favourite reads of the year. Pulled me in hook, line and sinker. Written so well that the now and then is so clear. Brilliant psychological thriller, highly recommend
A great fast paced psychological thriller. A page turner with a surprising ending.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the privilege of reading this book. From the beginning I was CONVINCED who the bad guy was, but that changed very quickly and the reveal was done stunningly.
I did not see it coming! Well done!!!
This is a thriller with a well laid plot and good twists. The story has an unusual pattern as a primary character is in a coma. She is alive inside but unable to let the doctors know that she is alive and trying to communicate. No one knows who she is but she can think; so she thinks about the history of what happened and why beautiful Evie disappeared.
Toni lost her husband to a war accident when their daughter, Evie, was only three and half years old. Toni slowly lost all their and her friends over the next eighteen months. She finally has moved to a small house in her mother’s neighborhood. Mum has been a big help even if that help sometimes seems intrusive. But Toni knows she is struggling and needs the help of her mum and maybe more. She is glad that Evie will be starting school soon and Toni decides she needs to find a job to help pay for the bills that have been piling up.
Harriet, who will be working with Evie in school, has stopped by to meet Toni. Harriet and mum don’t quite see eye to eye, and they both are clearly seeking to exercise control.
Toni is lucky to find a job but now she must deal with a resentful, insecure and jealous boss as well as coping with the opposition of her mother. Adding to her stress is the fact that Evie, picked up from her first day at school by Mum, has come home unhappy and unwilling to talk about it. After just a short time Evie disappears and three years later the story picks up with the coma patient.
The backstory is told through what appear to be memories of the coma patient as well as Toni’s point of view. And occasionally a journal entry by a ‘watcher’. There is a long section that covers day to day activity, introducing the characters who have contact with Toni and Evie. This got to be a bit drawn out for me as I was ready for the story to move on. When it finally gets to the crisis there are some twists that had me looking back at the beginning to see what clues I missed and noting the intentional misdirections.
The author lays out a good plot that includes at least three potential threats. The story has trauma, madness, greed and other motives revealed near the end. It had me shaking my head, wincing at behaviors, and shuddering at deliberate bullying and cruelties. I can recommend this to readers who like family drama with strong suspense.
I received this through NetGalley.
Oh my goodness - this book is about one unlucky lady. The things that happen to Toni are terrible.
This book has you on the edge of your seat from the very start and takes you on a psychological rollercoaster journey that you just can't put down.
Toni is a flawed and broken individual, and it is this that is used against her by an unseen enemy.
Unfortunately I had worked out pretty early on who was behind it all, so it lost a star for me , as I hate working it out before the end- but despite that it was a brilliant book and pushed all the right buttons all the way through.
