Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for this review copy.
The book begins with a woman in a coma having suffered a stroke. The hospital don’t know who she is. From a medical point of view she is unresponsive and they are considering turning off the life support machine. From the woman’s point of view, she is alive and kicking. She is awake inside and is screaming for someone to realise this, but she can’t move or talk and there is no way of letting the hospital staff know this.
The story then moves to Toni, three years earlier. She is a recently widowed single mother. She has moved with her daughter Evie to be nearer her mum. She is still grieving and is finding it difficult to cope, relying heavily on her husband’s old prescriptions. She gets her daughter into the local school where the teaching assistant there takes a keen interest in Evie. Despite her mum’s protestations that Toni should be there for Evie, Toni gets part time job at an estate agents to make ends meet. One day, she is late picking Evie up from school. When she gets there, Evie has gone.
The book switches the story between the woman in the coma and Toni’s story. The stories eventually merge together by the end, in the present time. Three years later and Evie is still missing, the police have never found her and there was never any CCTV at the school to show what happened. Everyone blamed Toni for what happened – a drugged up single mother who couldn’t get to school on time. Is Toni the woman in the coma? Who did take Evie and where is she now?
This was a great read. The whole ‘locked in syndrome’ storyline was just a bit too freaky for my liking though – I couldn’t think of anything worse than being locked inside your own body and unable to communicate with anyone, especially when they were considering turning off the one machine that was keeping you alive! I went through swings of feeling sorry for Toni to wanting to shout at her. Everyone you come across seemed to have some sort of back story which never seemed quite right, and by the end I just didn’t have a clue who had taken Evie.
The twist at the end was particularly clever! Wasn’t expecting that at all – I thought I had it all worked out! It was very interesting to see that whilst Toni obviously had her own issues and was still grieving, she only wanted to do the best for her child, and genuinely thought that she was doing that by going to back to work, yet everyone blamed her for what happened. There were lots of red herrings in the book also which kept me on my toes trying to work it all out! If you like psychological thrillers, then this is definitely the one for you!
Very good book, very clever book, very freaky book!! Five stars!
Easily a 10 star review!
I couldn't put this book down.
I was hooked from the very first chapter.
Blink is, gripping, Exciting, keeps you in suspense, actually plays mind games there is so many goose bump moments and exciting twists.
It's a physiological suspense thriller that doesn't disappoint.
I'm not often speechless when it comes to reviewing books but if I sum this book up then I may give too much away.
I seriously don't want to do that as I plead with you to read it!
Briefly.... Evie is a 5 year old little girl who goes missing one day and never comes back!
Toni, Evie's Mum has just lost her husband and is struggling with life.
She moves Evie to be closer to her Mum for support.
It's from this very day they move into their new house, things take a sinister turn.
Will Toni and Evie ever be happy?
Who is watching them? Is anyone actually watching them?
Who takes Evie that day? Will she ever be found?
The characters in this book are fantastic.
Each one is carefully thought out.
I didn't particularly like the teacher Harriet.
There was something about her that made me shudder.
Blink has a dark feel to it and really plays with your emotions!
Did I guess right? Was my suspicions correct.... I couldn't possibly say :-)
Be prepared for one almighty twist.
There is lots of little twists I was shocked. I had my suspicions but still had to read it twice! I was kicking myself for not seeing it!
I would love to hear your views on the twist to see if your suspicions were correct!
If your contemplating reading Blink, then please do read it. I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.
I'm sorry my review is short, but I loved this book and don't want to spoil it.
A book that leaves you tingling and your pulses racing and the hairs on your arms stand up is definitely a keeper.
Can't wait for more books from KL Slater!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author.
I was looking forward to this after reading so many great reviews. It starts off with a great backstory, the present revealing a comatose woman wondering what happened to the missing girl, while the past shows a single, grieving mother attempting to cope after losing her husband in Afghanistan. And things seem to go from bad to worse, as those surrounding her are hellbent on making her life as difficult as possible. This is where the red herrings were too obviously thrown all over the place.
And yes I did guess who was behind the abduction halfway through the book, which is the biggest problem when you try too hard to stop the big reveal and the pitfalls of following the standard thriller formula.
If you're an avid thriller reader - this will be another run of the mill novel with a less than spectacular showdown.
If not, it will be an enjoyable read.
4 stars.
Blink is a quick, fast-paced, easy read that captures your attention immediately and won’t let go till the very last sentence.
Toni Cotter had it all – a loving husband and a beautiful little girl named Evie. But that life didn’t last. Her husband, Andrew got called back to Afghanistan and he died in an accident, causing her carefree life to go up in flames. Unable to care for her daughter on her own, she and Evie move closer to her mum as they are in need of a fresh start. There, five year-old Evie starts at new school and has a hard time adjusting - becoming extremely unhappy and very quiet. Meanwhile, Toni, who has had a hard time coping with the cards life has dealt her, ends up making some very poor choices ultimately putting Evie’s life in danger. Unfortunately, in the end, these choices lead to catastrophic events: one day little Evie disappears. Years go by. And still there is no trace of her.
Yet Toni does not give up. She is a mother and even though she, and everyone else, blames herself for Evie’s disappearance, she believes her daughter to be alive. And she will not rest until Evie is found.
Alternating between Toni’s recollection of “Three Years Earlier” and the “Present Day,” KL Slater does a phenomenal job in keeping the readers in suspense and in keeping us off guard. There were times when I was sure that I knew what was going on and was completely wrong. There were a few plot points that I felt were unnecessary (hence the 4 star v. 5 star rating) but all in all, this was a good psychological thriller. If you are looking for a thriller that will keep you guessing and surprise you till the end, this is it.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and KL Slater for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Published on NetGalley, Goodreads and Amazon on 2/23/17.

Toni's 5 yrs old child Evie is abducted after school with no trace. Toni is insane with grief and will not stop until she is found.
Moving back and forth between three years, bits and pieces of the mystery are revealed at a snail's pace. In my opinion, the story moved sluggishly and I was skip reading the last half of the book. But ... there were lots of red herrings, I had suspects but didn't know who the culprit was until the surprise twist at the end.

Blink
Switching between timelines of 'three years ago' and 'now', Blink follows Toni and her five year old daughter Evie.
Blink is a psychological treat that I couldn't put down. Great characters, twists and turns, along with plenty of red herrings; this book is really entertaining and highly recommended. 4.5*
Thank you to NetGalley for my copy of this novel.
Wow!! Excellent writing& wonderful characters whom you feel for. About halfway through, I thought I had this all figured out. Wrong! It was a roller coaster of a story I didn't want to get off of. I'm very excited to see what this author has next!
This book was amazing and had more twists and turns than a rollercoaster! I'm pretty good at figuring out how a book will end WAY before the ending actually comes, but this one caught me completely by surprise. The characters were SO vivid and multi-dimensional.
Toni's decent into the "haze" that her life becomes shows just how easily someone can slip, unintentionally, into addiction. Suffering from deep-seated grief on so many different levels and unable to cope and too ashamed to ask for help, she "self-medicates" thinking that she has everything under control. But, when her 5 year old daughter mysteriously goes missing, she is pushed over the edge and her brain and improperly cared for body just can't handle the added grief and stress.
This book is full of quirky, creepy characters, and if you think you know "whodunit" and why... think again.
This plot line was so very well done. Every little detail was painstakingly thought out and exquisitely executed. I just cannot say enough about the perfection of Slater's writing, and she has gained a literary fan, for life, in me.
*I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from NetGalley & Bookouture in order to read and provide a voluntary and honest review, should I choose to do so.
Sweet Jesus what a book this is, I read it in one sitting as I physically could not put the bloody thing down, I was turning pages well into the night....
The ending well I'd not guessed it, I had no idea and had to go back a few chapters to re read and make sure I'd read it properly, to then try make sense of it, a shocker!
God I hated Harriet I physically wanted to reach into the book and bloody strangle her, hated that someone as crazy and unhinged could hold a job down and have so much contact with vulnerable innocent children, she made me blood boil, I was ok the edge of my seat throughout and you will be too!
There's plenty of red herrings and twists in this book and the pace is fast, no stopping for breath! Loved it and cannot wait to read more by the author, cracking read best book this year so far!!!
OH.MY.GOD!!!! Have you ever been SO engrossed in a book that you end up reading it whilst you're cooking the dinner, or sorting out the washing? Of course you have! Now, have you ever been unable to remove your hands from said book as you found it rather impossible to put down; toying with the possibility of getting a prison sentence if anyone DARED to disturb you reading THAT book, which in turn meant you just HAD to finish reading the book whilst you were eating your dinner? Let's just say that there is a slight possibility that what I've just said, could have been my actions where Blink was concerned. Wait, scrap that. No COULD, no SLIGHT, it was me! Usually I would hang my head in shame/embarrassment, but not this time!
I had never read a book whilst eating my dinner before; until Blink came along. This is where reviews become truly difficult to write, when all you want to do is shout about the book and everything you loved about it, including all the 'OMG WHAT ABOUT THE TIME....' moments. But, I can't do that today as it would be highly unfair seeing as you can buy 'Blink' for a mere 99p (here), and you can find out for yourself!
'Blink' is probably one of THE most intense novels I have ever read. From the get go there was a lot of uncertainty and nervousness where a few of the characters were concerned, with those situations playing out very slowly over the course of each chapter. It felt as though each character had something to hide as the vibes they were giving off, even from the beginning, were very sketchy.
Toni came across as such a defeatist in terms of actions and responses to other people's opinions. It was a shame as I felt that she deserved a little bit of luck sent her way. As the storyline spread its wings, character personalities became a little bit clearer and I ended up being on high alert for little pieces of information which I thought sounded a bit suss.
We all do it with books like this; try to play detective and think that we can get one over on the book. I'm not going to lie, about 3/4's of the way through I was just about to go 'HAH I'VE GOT IT' to my living, being a smidge over-confident, when I read a little bit more and ended up with egg on my face. Not literally obviously, but you know. I was WAYYYYY off the mark. At least I know not to apply to be a detective!
Seeing as I was a teeny bit aware of what the storyline is centred around (shock horror I read 1/3 of the blurb), I tried to ease myself into the storyline very gently just in case I couldn't handle it. Yeahhhhh, I tried and failed after the first chapter. Once I had opened that baby on my kindle, there literally was no turning back. Stupidly I started reading it in the early hours of the morning and had to do preposterous things like try to sleep. I mean, WHO INVENTED SLEEP WHERE BOOKS ARE CONCERNED! The following day whenever I was cooking or faffing about my house, my kindle had to come with me so that I could read and end up NOT cooking or faffing about. I'm not even being over the top when I say all of that, as I was actually like that with this book!
'Blink' is an intense, hair-raising and gripping read which will have you falling off the edge of your seat in suspense. K.L.Slater's writing is PHENOMENAL and she has laced every single word with copious amounts of grit and uncertainty, enough to warrant a rapid heartbeat and sweaty palms without being uncomfortable. I have never, ever, read a book before which has pulled me into its storyline by every hair on my body; until now. It gripped me, shocked me, made my heart pound, made my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth when it went dry and even caused my eyes to leak. For a book to do all of that, and more, it just goes to show what an absolute BELTER of a book it is, and how extraordinary the author is to be able to expose such intense reactions from just one reader.
A SUPERB, powerful and gut wrenching read that will have you on tender hooks the whole way through. 'Blink' is an outstanding and extraordinary read, full of everything you could ever want within a book. A must-read from TWG!
It is safe to say that 'Blink' has clawed its way into my top FIVE books of ALL TIME. Seriously, the author is a genius. Absolutely fantastic.
Thank you so much Bookouture.
What if the person you love most in the world was in terrible danger … because of you?
Three years ago, Toni’s five-year-old daughter Evie disappeared after leaving school. The police have never been able to find her. There were no witnesses, no CCTV, no trace.
But Toni believes her daughter is alive. And as she begins to silently piece together her memories, the full story of the past begins to reveal itself, and a devastating truth.
Toni’s mind is trapped in a world of silence, her only chance to save herself is to manage the impossible. She must find a way to make herself heard. She must find her daughter.
A compelling, gripping thriller with a breathtaking twist that will keep you awake until the early hours. Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, Behind Closed Doors and The Sister.
A lot of books have recently been claiming to be the next Girl on the Train or the next Gone Girl, but few live up to their claims. Blink is one that surpassed all of my expectations and grips the reader from the very start until the last chapter.
Slater tells the story of Toni and Evie Cotter, a newly widowed mother and her five-year-old daughter trying to start over in a new town after losing their husband and father, respectively. Unbeknownst to her mother, Toni has been coping with her husband’s death by taking his pain medication to forget her problems while Evie’s teaching assistant takes a special interest in helping her adjust to her new life. As Toni battles her inner demons and tries to make a happier life for her daughter, the unthinkable happens - Evie is gone.
Told in chapters alternating between present day and three years earlier, when Evie was taken, and alternating narrators, Blink provides a variety of viewpoints and possible villains. Just when you think you know what is happening, your viewpoint changes, quite literally in the blink of an eye.
Blink is a quick read that will have you hanging on to every word until the very end with Slater’s sleight of hand and twists of fate every time you think you know the true perpetrator. You don’t want to miss this one, so be sure to pre-order your copy today!
**Disclaimer** I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I would like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Blink’ by K L Slater in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Following the death of her husband in Afghanistan, Toni Cotter and her daughter Evie have moved to Nottingham to live near her mother. Toni finds a part-time job in a local property letting agency but is struggling to cope.
The story commences with an unknown woman lying in a vegetative state in hospital suffering from ‘locked-in syndrome’, and moves with great effect from the present time to three years previously when Toni arrives late to collect Evie from school only to find that she has disappeared.
K L Slater is a brilliant writer, skilfully building the tension until it’s impossible to put the book down. I can say without reservation that ‘Blink’ will become one of the year’s best-sellers, and deservedly so.
After having devoured the author’s first book, I knew I just had to get the second story. But the thing with second books is that your expectations are sky high and it puts those stories under a lot of pressure. Few can handle it, I’ve seen series or authors lose their flame after that first beautiful spark. I am happy to declare this was not the case with Blink.
Now, the first thing that came to mind when I read the title was the Doctor’s warning to not blink when faced with weeping angels. You don’t get stone aliens or whatever here, but what is in a blink? A second, a warning, a nod, a sexy eye contact, a dust. Blinking is a reflex, but Blink gives you a taste of just how devastating this tiny gesture can be and how many different meanings and consequences it can have.
The book should wear a warning. Be prepared to lose track of time, plans, to cancel plans and become a hermit for a few hours. Because once you’re in, you’re locked in a nightmare you won’t want to wake up from. That is just how gripping Blink is.
Little Evie disappeared. One in a million kids going missing every year. But her mother believes she is alive. A usual survival trick to make it through another day when the person you love the most has left your side. Nothing very original, I hear you say. I laugh at your assumption because I felt the same. I laugh at our mistake!
So you start reading. A POV, the present, a hospital, someone suffered from a stroke, a mess of a head, locked memories. Another POV, the past, a most recalling, a mother trying to cope. Other POVs you can only discover by yourself. A whirlwind of thoughts whose only connection is little Evie. Bits and pieces from the present and the past that slowly create a path to the child, to what happened on a fateful day most parents dream about and wake up wrenched in sweat, tears down their faces and their hands clutching the sheets.
K.L. Slater masterfully plays with every chapter, every change of scenery, every character to lead you to Evie but never in a clean and cut way. You can’t keep your distance with the story. You have no choice but to feel, every page brings you emotions, and with every word comes tension, because whether you’re in the now or then, you are aware something is there, happening. You know you can’t trust everything and everyone, and your heart races a little faster with the fear of missing a hint, of messing up the cards you are handed, of not being able to read the map. Your thoughts are everywhere, you brain tries to make sense of what you read, your heart reaches out to that poor child. Blink has a ticking clock hidden at its center, the compelling read turning from a slow tale of a disaster into a race for the truth.
The characters skillfully tote you around to witness their lives, their struggles, their decisions, good or bad. Even though I disapproved of some of her choices, Toni moved me in a way I thought would not be possible. I am not a mother yet, but the cards life handed her, her love for her husband and daughter, her impossible task to recreate a life, her determination and her will to juggle it all made me root for her. I smiled at the relationship with her mother, as it looked a lot like what I share with mine. My heart broke for her.
Even little Evie felt as if she was just here with me as I was reading. I enjoyed the flashbacks that allowed me to connect with that little girl, to create an image of her instead of just picturing a cold colored image of a child I did not know throughout the story. The people in Blink are real people, neighbors, friends, colleagues. They never felt they did not belong to the world we live in. This is both a reassuring and scary thought, depending on the characters you refer to! I believe such stories don’t work if they can’t be supported by the right protagonists. The ones you will find inhabiting this tale will make you react, one way or another. I know I cared a lot, I judged a little, I tried to understand, I fell into some pitfall and avoided others, I spotted red herrings, unable to make sure I was on the right track. I loved being left wondering all the way. Because suspicion is everywhere, and there are enough people around Evie to weave a hundred assumptions and point the finger. The characterization was so spot-on that every voice felt unique and trustful, every character having their own personalities, their own background, that is was difficult not to let yourself find some logic, some explanation, some reason to believe them, to question them, to trust them until…
Until you get what every lover of psychological thriller dreams of but seldom gets: the OMG moment, the plot twist that makes you yell “Whaaaaat?!” at the poor Kindle who delivered the news, the heart-stopping words that leaves you speechless. It takes a lot to leaves me fumbling for words, but the author managed to shut me up for five minutes straight. If this can’t convince you, nothing else will.
From this point, I became a crazy version of myself, sent everyone to hell and held on to my device until the ending delivered, and boy did it really deliver.
Blink has tension ratcheting up every time you close your eyes for a second while the efficient writing plays with your emotions and your mind. Blink is filled with the best of what a psychological thriller has to offer and deserves the award for Best Plot Twist of the year.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
This book had a lot of unexpected twists and turns! I was hooked, and wanted more. I definitely will read more from this author in the future!
From the very first chapter, this book had me hooked.
Most of us have a fear of being trapped. Trapped somewhere from where we can't escape, trapped in a relationship, trapped in a dead-end job - but imagine being trapped in your own body. Fully conscious and overhearing conversations about how the time is approaching to think about turning off your life support - because you are completely unresponsive and the Doctors have decided you're in a persistent vegetative state. No matter what you do, or how hard you try, you can't make your body respond to your brain. Scary, eh?
This is where we start - a very strong start, with the increasingly panicked thoughts of the patient detailed above.
The story unfolds with a number of narrators and we switch between different timescales - the present day and 3 years previously as we lead up to 5 year old Evie's disappearance following her move to a less than desirable neighbourhood with her young mum, Toni after the death of her father in Afghanistan. Where is Evie? Is she alive? Who took her and why? Who is in the hospital bed?
It's an intriguing, well executed, well plotted book and there's a real element of horror dished out with the 'locked in' syndrome. The suspense is introduced well and grows quite slowly, leaving you not quite sure what's going on - rather like Toni. There were a few red herrings too many and I felt the end was a bit crazy given the pace of the rest of the novel, but it didn't spoil it for me.
I'd like to thank Netgalley, Bookouture and KL Slater for the advance review copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This one actually kept me guessing! Slater has written a real page turner. Toni is a fascinating character and her inability to communicate made this a unique addition to the genre of missing children thrillers. It's hard to write a review because of spoilers but suffice it to say, this one does deliver. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Recommend this for an entertaining read you won't want to put down. It's perfect for travel because it's so plot driven.
OH MY FRIGGING GOD!!!!!
Kim has done it again with Blink and managed to produce a most thrilling book.
When Toni's life has fallen apart, she tries to rebuild it. Boy does she try. But she cannot seem to catch a break then, when she does, her daughter disappears without a trace. Toni's world falls out from underneath her and as the search is eventually dwindled back, it seems as though the truth about her daughter will never be discovered.
I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing plot, it is totally enthralling, brilliantly deceptive and bitterly twisted.
For me it started a little slow in terms of Toni trying to get her life together but around the half way line there is enough going to really get those criminal minds thinking, who is doing what and why and what are they doing that for and why did she say that?
I've mentioned before when reviewing that there is a point in most books when the pace picks up and you are left unable to stop reading, there is a point where you know that you will not be stopping until the very last word has been read and when it happens in Blink, the pace does not let up one bit and it is thrilling!
And the ending, full of shocks and five little words that made me sob for ages afterwards!
I would highly recommend this to any crime fan, it's a brilliant read.
I found this book hard to get into, in the end I skipped large parts to get the twist and the final few chapters. It's well written, just not the book for me.
This is a tremendous psychological thriller of the type that you are reluctant to leave until you have finished. Toni is convinced that her missing daughter Evie is alive but is not really able to prove to people that this is the case. It is difficult to say more without giving away plot developments, which are intriguing throughout.
This is a really difficult novel to review without giving any of the plot twists away – which by the way are amazing!
Blink is a fast paced psychological thriller (if I hadn’t had to go to work I’d have read it in one sitting) that really grips you from the start.
Toni Cotter has recently moved to Nottingham with her five year old daughter Evie to be nearer her Mother.
Her late husband, Evie’s Father passed away whilst serving in Afghanistan and a fresh start is what both Mother and Daughter so desperately need.
Evie is swiftly enrolled into the local primary school, and Toni finds herself a job at the local Estate agency.
Determined to stand on her own two feet and not rely on her Mother’s help, Toni does struggle, but she believes she knows what’s best for her family.
If Toni thought that she was living in a nightmare when her husband died, she was very much mistaken.
For after a chain of unforeseen circumstances, Toni is late picking up Evie from school, and Evie is nowhere to be found. She has seemingly vanished and Toni’s nightmare has only just begun...
