BLINK by K.L. Slater is the authors second psychological thriller. The book is set in Nottinghamshire. I loved her debut thriller, Safe With Me”, and I couldn’t wait to read this novel. I was not disappointed…I loved it.
“A gripping psychological thriller with a killer twist you’ll never forget.”
The story opens with a women in a medical centre who has suffered a stroke currently on a respirator, in a vegetative state as she cannot speak or move. But she is very much alive…a prisoner in a corpse…and she remembers everything…but the doctors think she is brain-dead!
Toni Cotter had moved to Nottinghamshire with her 5-year-old daughter, Evie for a fresh start, and to be close to her mom, after her husband, Andrew had been killed during a special operation in Afghanistan. It was hard for both Evie after the death of her father, adapting to a new area and new school with no friends. Toni tried to be a strong mother, dealing with financial problems as well as grief, and resorted to taking her dead husband’s sedatives to cope with life.
“Three years ago, Toni’s five-year-old daughter Evie disappeared after leaving school. The police have never been able to find her. There were no witnesses, no CCTV, no trace.”
TONI BELIEVES HER DAUGHTER IS ALIVE. SHE MUST FIND HER DAUGHTER.
The story flips back and forth between "Three Years Earlier" and "Present Day" and “Diary Entry” and this will keep you flipping the pages, trying to fill in the total picture.
The mystery of what has happened to Evie is gripping and any one of a number of characters could have been involved in her disappearance. Packed with twists and red herrings that keep the reader guessing. At the 80% mark in my Kindle, the story breaks wide open. WOW! I was scrambling to race ahead and see what was going to happen. And then the ending was POW! I won’t reveal anything more. Just read this book.
BLINK… BLINK
Highly recommended for all psychological lovers.
Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and Netgalley for th
wow. just wow. that is really all I can say. I ate this book up. it was a faat, easy, thrilling read that left me guessing up to the end. the subtitle talked of a twist and what a twist it was. at one point, I guessed what the twist was but pushed it back sure I was wrong. there are so many suspects in the disappearance of Evie. who did it? why? why is someone in a vegetative state? all will be answered...eventually.
What if the person you love most in the world was in terrible danger … because of you?
Three years ago, Toni’s five-year-old daughter Evie disappeared after leaving school. The police have never been able to find her. There were no witnesses, no CCTV, no trace.
But Toni believes her daughter is alive. And as she begins to silently piece together her memories, the full story of the past begins to reveal itself, and a devastating truth.
Toni’s mind is trapped in a world of silence, her only chance to save herself is to manage the impossible. She must find a way to make herself heard. She must find her daughter.
The description of the book made me want to get my hands on a copy asap!
You think you know what the books about but it's very cleverly written . The reader is gradually drawn in to the story of Toni and her missing child. Ive noticed there are lots of books about missing children around at the moment but Blink is totally different. Hard to say to much without giving the mind blowing plot away. Suffice to say I loved this book and the ending came completely out of the blue and shocked me to the bone. Look forward to reading more by KL Slater.
Blink by K. L Slater begins with a chapter titled before. In this chapter, we get to find out about the missing child. In subsequent chapters, there are narrations about events that took place three years before and other chapters about present events. The narration goes back and forth between the two timelines with the past dominating the first part and the present taking over the final part. The two timelines helps in piecing together the events that led to Evie’s disappearance.
The book has multiple narrators. Toni is the main narrator. We get to see her trying to start a new life with her daughter after the death of her husband. Toni is likeable and easy to sympathize with even though I didn’t agree with all her decisions. She is portrayed as loving mother who is currently undergoing some struggles. There is another dark, twisted narrator whose identity I will not reveal for now. I have already said this before but I am always intrigued by the darker narrations. These narrations were scary yet intriguing as we got to see the workings of a very twisted mind. I also really liked the fact that Evie was also one of the narrators. Another key narrator is introduced towards the final chapters of the book. The book definitely had really well-developed, memorable characters.
One of the main characters in the story is in a coma. I was fascinated by this character’s narration. It was interesting to see things from this perspective especially because the character is trapped in a world that nobody else can reach. The identity of this character remains a mystery up to the final section of the book. All along I thought that I knew who it was but I was dead wrong.
What I really liked…
Blink by K. L. Slater is quite suspenseful read, masterfully narrated. I couldn’t put the book down and I ended up getting through it last Saturday. The multiple narrations are interwoven skillfully to heighten the tension and bring everything together. I liked the twists and revelations throughout the book. The ending was . I had a number of suspects throughout the book but I couldn’t have guessed the identity of the kidnapper.
I definitely recommend this book to all fans of psychological thrillers. If you are looking for a twist, fast-paced thriller with unique, well-developed characters then I definitely recommend this one.
To be honest, I wasn't expecting too much from this because I've been getting a little tired of the 'child gone missing' trope. But this was great! Going back and forth between "the present" and "three years ago", and told from multiple perspectives, this is the story of a struggling widow who is trying to have a fresh start with her 5-year-old daughter. A new school, a new house, closer to Grandma, a new part-time job... until one day, she is late picking up her daughter from school.
Loved the twists and reveals, didn't see them coming. This will definitely keep you guessing and wondering whether there is actually a single character who is trustworthy. Despite the different perspectives and the back and forth in time, the story flowed really well and was never confusing.
I shouldn't have doubted K.L. Slater's skills for creating gripping psychological thrillers. After all, I loved her debut Safe With Me. I received an ARC via NetGalley.
Okay, so I've actually never any of Slater's books before now. I do own Safe With Me, but I also have about 1001 other books on my TBR that are currently screaming my name, so I haven't yet had the opportunity to read it. I will definitely pick it up though, because I really enjoyed it! It wasn't the best thriller I've read so far this year, but I enjoyed it enough.
The pacing of this novel was definitely on the slower side. There were a lot of chapters, which meant they were pretty short (always a positive in my experience), and I thought it was perfect that the book was split into two parts. Part 1 is definitely slower. I know that for some readers, they'll find it extremely boring because it's not very thriller-y at all; it has more of a contemporary feel with the fact that Toni is suffering between taking care of her daughter and dealing with the grief of her husband's death a couple years back and moving into a new place and her mom riding on her about things and dealing with a new job, etc. We have a peek at these journal entries that seem from the captor's point-of-view, and the POV of the person who's paralyzed, but those are pretty short and pretty spare. Part 2 was definitely interesting and I couldn't stop reading once I reached that part; I just binged until the very end.
The characters were just fine (it's always awkward to talk about characters since I don't care much for them when I'm reading my thrillers). It's quite easy to gain sympathy for Toni since she's suffering from so many things and she's just trying to get her life together just like anyone else. We also get to learn more about Harriet Watson, who plays a larger part in the book besides "the abusing teacher I hated a lot." She was quite the three dimensional character, and I actually really enjoyed learning more about her as the novel went on.
I thought the premise was done semi-well. I feel like it might be a bit misleading, but I'm not going to talk about it anymore so as not to spoil anyone. Again, this book was a bit slower than I thought it'd be, so if you're looking for a faster-paced thriller, this will probably not be your jam. I'd also say that if you're looking for a thriller revolving around missing kids, this isn't the one for you, either.
I actually really enjoyed the ending a lot. Like most thrillers, it has all the plot twists that most modern thrillers have these days, but I actually didn't mind them too much. I really enjoyed the very last chapter of this book; it was so touching. And that's it, that's all I'm saying about the ending because no spoilers!
what a story absolutely brilliant thank you for letting me review such a story teller
I have only one word for this book....... WOW
Wish I could give it 20 stars I loved it.
A few twists along the way but no way did I expect the twist at the end.
I could not put this book down it kept me hooked from the first page.
A great psychological thriller and another fab book by K. L. Slater
Thanks, NetGalley and Bookouture for the chance to read Blink in exchange of a honest review which is unbiased and entirely my own.
Toni has been widowed and is struggling to bring up her five-year-old daughter Evie. She is forced to move from London to live closer to her mother in Northampton. Toni has become addicted to her deceased husband’s sedatives and has been stockpiling and hiding them in different places.
Evie has started at a new school, the teaching assistant (whom considers herself to be better than the qualified teacher) takes her under her wing. Miss Watson made me uncomfortable from the start, this discomfort continued throughout.
Due to circumstances, out of her control Toni is late collecting Evie from school, her world is turned upside down as Evie has vanished without a trace.
There are so many suspects that when you reach the climax nothing can prepare you for the discovery, a real shocker I had to re-read it in case my mind was playing tricks on me.
I must admit at one point in the book I was getting concerned about the conclusion and did something I don’t think I have ever done on my kindle, I skipped to the last chapter, before returning to where I was. Had I not done so I would never have been able to sleep.
I really liked how the story unfolds, being told from the present day to three years previous, and the two merging at the end.
I never read thrillers but I read the synopsis of this book and thought I’d give it a go. This book is absolutely amazing. I was so sure I knew where the story was going throughout, boy was I wrong . I actually had to put the book down for a while to digest what I had just read. Did I miss the clues? Am I just really stupid or was it just written so well that there was no way I would have gotten it? I’ll go with the last one there!
This was my first book by KL Slater but most definitely will not be my last.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Bookcouture for an arc copy in exchange for an honest review.
Great read! Had me right from the start and I was compelled to keep reading until I found out what was going on and it was not what I was expecting! Loved it!
Another satisfying read from author KL Slater. A fast paced psychological thriller that draws the reader in and ties them up in knots with superb twists and turns.
This novel features Toni whose five-year-old daughter Evie disappeared after leaving school three years ago. The police have never been able to find her. There were no witnesses, no CCTV, no trace.
Toni is convinced her daughter is still alive and she is determined to find out the truth.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture for another great read in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 Stars.
This book for me didn't really get going till about 70% in, with the first part of the book spending too much time setting the scene.
The main character Toni had been through a terrible time but somehow the writing style made me lack empathy for her.
There were far too many red herring characters thrown in and overall it felt like the author was just trying too hard to have that final twist.
It was enjoyable and the last third of the book was 4 stars, but overall something was missing for me.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this advance copy.
Oh WOW !! A twist that you would not believe. I had to re-read a chapter as I couldn't believe what I was reading. I thought I had guessed who was involved but was a million miles from the truth. This book deserves far more than the five stars it can be awarded. . It is amazing !! Can't wait for the third book by this author
I thought that K.L. Slater’s first book Safe with me woud be her best ever, but I was soooo wrong!
At te start of the book we learn about a woman in hospital with the locket-in syndrome. Alternatively we read about 3 years earlier, when Toni and Evie move house and start a new life after Toni’s husband has died. From the “now” chapters you already know Evie will get kidnapped, so you just have to know what happened. I was totally convinced that I knew who the woman in hospital would be, but I was wrong. And then for a second time. Up till the end I never even guessed who could have been the kidnapper. And when finally everything gets revelead I just had to keep on reading, even though it was already the middle of the night and I had to get up early the next morning. I just could not stop until I knew what had happened.
And now I have to wait for her next book, I hope this will not take too long because I am addicted!
Compelling mystery drama -- lots of questions in this time shifting psychological thriller. In addition, point of view changes with chapters and the characters are not exactly what they seem. Toni and her daughter have moved house after Toni's husband dies in Afghanistan. Toni is stressed and strung out on pills. Someone watching them is not happy -- and doesn't think Toni is taking proper care of her little 5-year-old Evie. So maybe that someone should take her away from her mom so she'll get the time and attention she needs.
Just who is the woman with "locked in" syndrome lying in hospital? And what does she have to do with the abduction/disappearance of Evie? It's been 3 years -- can someone who can only blink help solve this case?
What a fantastic read .. love the authors style of writing . This had me hooked from the beginning with twists that have your jaw drop .. can't wait till her next book .. thanks to netgalley and bookouture for my arc which I have chosen to review
Very nearly a 5* read, the only reason why I have given it 4* is because the character of Toni was too naive to be fully believable. Otherwise brilliantly written from lots of different viewpoints with plenty to keep you guessing
I recently read Safe With Me by K.L. Slater, and really enjoyed it. So I was excited when I got approved to read an early copy of this book via Netgalley. And I couldn't wait to start it.
Another great book. Very well written and well put together. And I have to say all the way through I just kept wondering which way the story could go. I have to say though that I did not expect the ending we had. In fact I'm not sure what I expected if I'm honest lol. Once you have read it and you sit back and think about the story I think the clues were there, you just don't realise until afterwards.
It is very Cleverley put together.
A mothers worst nightmare, her child going missing, add into that guilt and blaming yourself because if you hadn't been late would Evie not have gone missing. The guilt makes Toni's live a living hell. And if she wasn't coping to well with her husbands death, what is this going to do to her.
Toni and her daughter have moved to a new town, a new start after the death of her husband. It's just what they need isn't it. Toni finds herself a job and Evie has a place at the local school. Things can only get better for them, Cant they? Toni also has the help of her mother as her and Evie have moved closer to her. But is her mother just a little overbearing, is her mother not helping with things.
Brilliantly written and very well put together. This story will have you guessing what is going to happen next, and you'll probably get it wrong.
There is enough going on to keep you interested, keep you wanting to turn the pages, but not to much that you can't follow it.
The story flips between the present day and three years earlier, I found this really good, and loved how you got to piece things together and learn what had happened.
A great read, and a book I think many will enjoy.
