Don't Look Behind You by Mel Sherratt
Everything Sherratt touches seems to turn to gold and Don't Look Behind You, is no exception. Tense, brutal, fast paced and compelling it's absorbing from beginning to end. Eden Berrisford is in the thick of it. Her compassion to the women victims is laudable, her commitment to her job amazing. A story about women victims told sensitively and with no holds barred. Loved it!

RATING: 4 STARS
(I received an ARC from the NETGALLEY)
(Review Not on Blog)

I know this is only my second novel by Mel Sherratt, but I am adding her to my must-read list. I enjoy the writing, the plot and characters. Sherratt also adds a lot of emotion in the cases so you feel very invested in the characters and outcome. There are three seemingly random violent attacks that Eden is trying to tie together and comes across a woman who is running away from her past. Eden doesn't believe in coincidences so looks to see what lies behind her secrets and these violent attacks. I really hope there are more novels in this series!

I really enjoyed this book, although the subject matter of domestic violence does not make easy reading. Much of the story revolves around a women's refuge. Carla is a counsellor there, but only a few people know that she suffered at the hands of her abusive husband for years. Now he is out of prison, and she knows that he will find her and kill her. In the meantime, a man is brutally attacking and raping women in the town. Who is he, and can detective Eden Berrisford and her team catch him before he kills someone? A real page turner - thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.

Thank you bookouture and netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I hadn't read the first book in this series but it didn't detract from the characters and storyline. In fact I need to buy the first one to find out what started it off!

Eden is a brilliant detective and dealing with a broken marriage, failing relationship with her boyfriend and someone is terrorising the females in her town. Carla is a counsellor at the local women's refuge who has her own demons and facing the worst moment of her life knowing her ex husband is still terrorising her.

Absolutely loved this, brilliant likeable characters!

I received a copy of Don't Look Behind You through NetGalley for an honest review. Thank you to Bookouture and Mel Sherratt for the opportunity.

I thought this book was ok. I actually liked it better than the first book in the series but it's just missing something to make me fall in love with the lead character. There are 2 protagonists in this story but I felt like Eden was a secondary role. Detective Eden Berrisford and her team are investigating brutal attacks on young women and at the same time she is involved with women at a shelter for abused women. Carla was in an abusive relationship and now working at the shelter. Her abusive husband has been recently released from prison and out for revenge.

The book was well written but there was no suspense or surprises. I thought Carla's storyline was predictable yet more exciting than Eden's storyline. The climax was very anticlimactic.

I may have to give up on this series. After reading the first two books, I feel there are so many other lead woman detective stories that I enjoy more.

I’ve been hearing about Mel Sherratt as an author for a while and finally managed to give it a try. Such a shame to me that this is my first book of hers. But I can promise you one thing, it won’t be my last! This is the second one in the series, but don’t be bothered by that. It can perfectly stand all alone.

Detective Eden Berrisford and her team face one of hardest cases in the career. There are several brutal attacks on local women, within a time frame of a couple of days. The victims are terrified, hurt and scared. They can’t even describe the attacker because his face is always covered and he doesn’t say a word. The investigation leads Eden to a woman’s refuge, The Willows, where abused women can find peace and safety for a while. But the abuse is not only a physical issue, it leaves psychological scars. One of the women in the shelter is Carla, who ran away from an abusive marriage that cost her her daughter’s life. A home is never a home, just a place where you sleep. She can never settle down, she always looks over her shoulder, always checks the doors twice. She escaped, but in her mind, he is always there. And something in the new arrival’s testimonies looks familiar! Should she tell what she knows or should she stay quiet and become the victim again?

Detective Eden has a tough job to do. Attacks on women continue, each one worse than the previous one. She has to hurry if she wants to save the next victim and put the bastard behind the bars.

Domestic violence is never an easy issue to write or read about. I truly admire those authors capable of writing realistic abusive scenes and bringing them up to the reader. Here, the author brings up several stories of domestic violence and combines them with brutal attacks out on the street. She vividly describes the police officers’ daily challenges and dangers they face every time they answer a call. Truly amazing!

As I said previously, this won’t be my last book of this author. It is not classical police procedural where there are a detective and a serial killer, but a police case that is seen from all points of view, the police officer’s, the victim’s and all people involved. Many emotions are into this story, you can not stay untouched. It will keep you on the edge until the last page!

This is Mel Sherratt at her best. Here we meet Eden again who is trying to find the man who is attacking young girls. As usual with Mel's stories, there is a side story about Carla and her desire to escape her abusive husband Ryan who was jailed 9 years ago. She knows he is out there somewhere as she keeps getting parcels from him. The story has me with my heart in my mouth, quickly turning the next page to find out what happens next. The suspense just jumps out at you. An excellent book with characters you really like or hate depending on who they are!

A gripping read hard to put down. The past has a way of catching up to you but also exes have a way of finding you. Watching your back all the time is mentally exhausting. Domestic violence leaves everlasting scars that never leave you.

I really enjoyed reading the second book in the detective series. I love Eden's character! Kept me engaged all through even though at times it did get quite uncomfortable. Definitely a book I would recommend.

We are back again with Detective Eden Berrisford in this book 2.
One thing I will say about this author is she certainly knows how to write a bloody good book, and that is exactly what this is. Drawn into the pages right from the beginning this book leaves you wanting more.
A brilliantly put together story highlighting some of the issues of Domestic violence. showing the controlling powers that some thrive on, while injecting fear into their partners. It’s a horrible subject, but one that was covered brilliantly.
I felt for these women the whole way through this book. I wanted to get them somewhere safe and look after them.
Eden is trying to work the case, trying to find out who is attacking vulnerable women. Eden and her team go all out to find out the who and why.
The flow of the book is spot on.
As I said this is the second book featuring Ds Eden Berrisford, yet It could be read as a stand alone, but for me I feel it’s better if you have read the previous book. I find it always helps if you can know some of the characters back history and I feel reading the first book really helps with that.

All I can say because I really don’t want to give to much of the story line away is,,, just treat yourself buy this book get your feet up with a cuppa and get stuck in.
And if you haven’t read book one, then what a treat you are in for because then you can read book one and two back to back. Then sit and eagerly await book three like I am doing.

Well done Mel. Another fantastic read that deserves all 5 of the stars I’m giving it.

DS Eden Berrisford is back and trying to catch a man who is attacking young women in Stockleigh. Carla Gregory works at the local women's refuge but the women who seek help there don't know what she went through at the hands of her husband before he was jailed. Now Ryan Gregory has been released and Carla is just waiting for him to find her - he's found her everywhere else she's lived so why should Stockleigh be any different. While searching for the attacker Eden is surprised to be contacted by her estranged husband Danny but he doesn't want a reconciliation - he wants her to give him money so that he can pay off his debts. He claims that if she doesn't help Eden and her daughter Casey will be targetted by the loan shark. Loved the first book in the series and loved this one - read it in less than 24 hours. Look forward to book number three.

Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and Mel Sheraton for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This a chilling read, I enjoyed The Girls next door and this follow up doesn't disappoint! It does intrigue the reader and the author makes you work for your enjoyment which is refreshing as too many crime based novels lead the reader by the nose! This most definitely isn't that, it's full of twists which surprise and leave you feeling slightly uneasy! The book comes at time when violence towards women is participating newsworthy, this doesn't recycle it refreshes. The author is skilled at her work and has achieved a fantastic follow up, almost I'd say better that the first book!
