The memoirs of a Lieutenant General who first fought in the Boer War took part in the relief of Mafeking and went on to fight in the first world war. This memoir was originally published in 1938 and is another reprint through Endeavor press. If you decide to read this memoir, remember the time it was written, while I have no issue with people hunting for the table his tales of sport hunting tigers and elephants were a bit much for most modern sensibilities, I had issues with it. Especially since we now know most of the animals are on the endangered list due to the sports hunting of this era. this is the first memoir I have read that was written by someone who is higher up the chain of command, and his views on the wars being higher up are slightly different than someone who's a grunt or even a non-commissioned officer. This is definitely a book I can see getting for my own library especially since I have studied very little about this era in history. I liked this memoir especially since it's the first one printed by Endeavor press that I have read that wasn't focused on the American Civil War.
