I'd not met any of these characters before and gritted my teeth for half the book before deciding I really didn't care enough to continue. Maybe would have if I knew and loved the missing character, but uninspired.
It took me a while to get into this book as I had not read the previous books in the series, however, once I'd got the characters sorted in my mind it was full steam ahead with the added bonus that I have six great books to look forward to. I love the character of Darby McCormack and am looking forward to understanding her character a little better by reading the previous books. This novel was very well paced, almost unputdownable with two totally unexpected twists at the end. I would highly recommend it.
This is a fast paced serial killer thriller by Chris Mooney. It is the seventh in the Darby McCormick series of which I have read a couple but it serves perfectly fine as a standalone. Darby is a successful serial killer hunter with an enviable reputation. It begins with the tragic history of Karen Decker whose entire family was wiped out by Red Ryder, a serial killer. She herself was shot multiple times by him. Subsequently her life spiraled out of control as she made suicide attempts and got caught up in substance abuse. She then got in the habit of informing the FBI about a myriad of sightings of Red Ryder that proved to be so unreliable that they stopped taking her seriously. Darby's good friend, FBI agent Jackson Cooper calls her requesting her expertise and help in Montana with no further information.
On arriving in Montana, Darby finds that Cooper is nowhere to be found. However, she does happen to spot that her hotel room is being set up with monitoring equipment. It turns out that this is being carried out by the FBI, who are interested in what she knows. Noel, an FBI agent, tells her that Cooper was planning to meet up with Karen with reference to a sighting of Red Ryder that appeared to be unlikely. Unfortunately Karen is also missing. With the help of Noel, Darby retraces Cooper's footsteps as she investigates what happened to the missing pair. In the meantime, a killer has her in his sights as her every move is observed and Darby begins to wonder if there is anyone she can trust. This is a story of great twists as Darby walks into dangerous and deadly territory.
The author has penned an action fuelled story with plenty of suspense and tension. It is well written and keeps the reader hooked with ease. The character of Darby has more depth than you might get from some others who write in this genre. I really loved the book but as on other occasions with other Chris Mooney books, I find his endings don't seem to work as well with me. It is what stops me giving the full five stars. I am aware that this is not an issue with most other readers. Other than that, I think other crime fiction readers with enjoy reading this. Many thanks to Penguin Michael Joseph for an ARC.
Good, typical Chris Mooney action and adventure. What is hard with so many books based in the USA is one never knows which are the goodies and which are the baddies....... Never more so than in this book.
This is the seventh book in the Darby McCormick Series.
I loved the first book, The Missing, in this series and when I saw this on Netgalley I had to get it and I am so happy that I did. This can be read as a stand alone but I would at least start with the first book so that you get to know the characters, now I will be going back to book two through book six and I am really looking forward to it. It's intense and full of thrilling drama. It grabs you by the collar and takes you along for a crazy ride. This was full of action with twists and turns that just made my jaw drop and the final twist left me speechless. This is a gripping and haunting read. This is such a fast paced read, it gripped a hold of me and would not let go for anything in the world until i read every last word. This was not predictable, I was guessing all the way to the end.
The character development is really great. Darby's character is awe inspiring and tough to the bone. Part vigilante and part profiler, Darby has a knack for hunting down the bad guys but few ever get taken alive.
The book starts by introducing Karen, a survivor. She is trying to find a serial killer, named Red Ryder, who killed her whole family. Then the author introduces Darby and Cooper. Cooper invites Darby to Montana, when Darby gets there, Cooper is gone and has disappeared and she can find no trace of him. Alone in a strange town, Darby tries to find her friend and gradually manages to piece together Cooper's investigation. However someone is watching her and she is really not safe.. Who can she trust to help her?
This was just filled with suspense.
This is a gritty, nail biting, edge of your seat thriller. I just wanted this book to go on and on and didn't want it to end.
I highly recommend this for serial killer lovers or those that love a good mystery and thriller.
I want to thank Netgalley, the publisher and the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't know that going into this title not knowing it was the seventh in the series, I started reading this one as a standalone. After connecting immediately to Darby and realizing Cooper's disappearance, I am going to read the other novels in the series and come back to this one so I can get the full story. A full review will follow on this book (and the rest of the series!)
This book will definitely keep you engaged! I had trouble putting it down within minutes of starting the book. The complex characters kept my riveted and the ending was a twist that was great! Definitely worth a read.
Every pretty thing Chris Mooney
This is the first Chris Mooney and Darby McCormick book that I have read and I now feel that I must read the series from the beginning.
Darby McCormick is an ex-FBI profiler who is contacted by an old colleague FBI agent Jackson Cooper and suddenly finds herself in Montana, but, where is Cooper?.
Cooper has been on the hunt for a missing woman for 20 years and out of the blue she has contacted him. This woman was one of the earliest victims and survivors of a serial killer who has been working his way across America.
When Darby gets to Montana things go wrong, there are no clues and she is being stalked, but, by who? Can she find Cooper and help him to bring this serial killer to justice?

When serial killer hunter Darby McCormack is informed there may be a serial killer in Montana she heads there to meet her friend and FBI agent Jackson Cooper. When she arrives there Jackson has seemed to have disappeared. His car is later found at the bottom of a ravine with a dead body inside but the body is not his. Darby's on her own as it seems no one wants to help her and the FBI are no help stating that Cooper was there on a skiing trip. This was my first book by this author although it is able to be read alone it may have been advantageous to know the history between Darby and Cooper. I would recommend this and I would read this author's work again.
'Every Pretty Thing' by Chris Mooney has left me desperately hungry for more. I have never been so terrified, gripped and totally blindsided when reading a book before. It is a psychological thriller of the highest standard which will leave you unable to put it down but not wanting it to end.
It is the 7th instalment in the Darby McCormick series but the first I have ever read in the series and the author.
'Every Pretty Thing' follows Dr McCormick who is renowned for her excellent skills of hunting down serial killers. Her FBI partner Cooper has requested her assistance in Montana but won't give her any more information on the case until she arrives. Once in Montana Cooper is nowhere to be found. The FBI aren't happy with McCormick's presence and believe she knows more than she is letting on. A search for Cooper begins and McCormick begins to discover why it was he wanted her in Montana. It has to do with the Red Ryder - a serial killer who has never been caught or identified still do this day.
There is so much more to the story but I don't want to give anything away as the way you are drip fed information and the twists is what makes this book a 5 star read.
The character development and how their relationships develop throughout is impeccable. It had everything I could ever want in a novel.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher Michael Joseph - penguin UK for an e-copy in return for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin for an ARC of this book.
This is a very well written thriller, well plotted and thought out and hopefully totally implausible. Darby McCormick finds herself in the midst of an FBI investigation where she is thought of as a liability and dangerous. Her friend Jackson Cooper works for the FBI and has asked for her help but when she turns up in the small town where he has been working she finds he has disappeared and is thought to be dead. For various reasons she doesn't believe this and enlists the help of another agent Noel Covington, to find out what has happened. Noel is a survivor of a sadistic serial killer nicknamed the Red Ryder and their investigations take them into incredible danger.
This isn't the usual type of novel I read but I can see why the series involving Darby and Jackson is so popular. The writing is fresh and vivid, Darby is an unusual character and the will they/won't they relationship between her and Jackson is realistic. They fear that making their relationship sexual would ruin their friendship.
It is well plotted with several unexpected and I have to say disturbing twists. For me they were very unlikely but this is the type of novel where you have to suspend disbelief. If you didn't, you'd never visit a small town again in case it turned out to be like the one in this story!
I have been a fan of Chris Mooney for a long time and this was excellent! The characters were interesting and the you really start liking some like Darby and Cooper, and some I liked and they died, but the bad guys were very very bad and really wanting them dead. A thriller for sure, and very much a page turner. I highly recommend this one!
Test test test. NetGalley Community test for this title.
I was very lucky to win this book in Goodreads Giveaway, and get it approved on Netgalley. Thanks a lot for that. I didn’t have the chance to read any other books in Darby McCormimck’s series, but after reading this one, I will try to get the other parts as well. This book is seventh in the series, but it can easily be read, without reading the previous parts. I really enjoyed this book and it was very indulging.
The main, participating characters in this book were Dr. Darby McCormic and FBI agent Noel Covington. The whole story was mostly described from these two people’s perspective. The book starts by introducing Karen, the survivor of attack. She is trying to find a serial killer, named Red Ryder, who killed her whole family. Then, author introduces Darby and Cooper. Cooper invites Darby to Montana, when Darby gets there, Cooper is gone. Through particular course of events, Darby gets to meet Noel, and they together start looking for Cooper and Karen. Both of them have their own reasons to look for these two people, and while looking for them, they notice that there are some dodgy things going on in the town. Both characters are very interesting and smart. I am quite a fan of strong women in the books, and I really enjoyed Darby’s personality. She is strong, fearless, smart, and very determent.
The plot of this book is well thought through, and interesting to read. It flows quite steady during the investigation, showing some turns and twists, but it really spikes towards the end of the book. I would’ve enjoyed this book more, if there would’ve been more suspense in this novel. Around the middle of the book, I kind of lost my interest, to be honest, there were only few turns and twists, but when the author got to the culmination, it was “wow”. I really didn’t expect those things to happen and I was pleasantly shocked. I am very thankful to the author for bringing up a topic about religion, and what it could do to people if it is used too much.
The writing style in this book was easy to follow, and pleasurable to read. I liked short chapters of this book; it didn’t get you bored, and view from different character’s perspectives made it more interesting for the reader. The events of this book are not very suitable for sensitive people, as there is some blood shedding going on in this novel. I really enjoyed the twist at the end of this book, and it got me curious about what is going to happen to Darby next. So, to conclude, I would recommend this book is you are looking for a nice mystery and thriller, filled with unexpected discoveries of a small town in Montana.
This is the first book I've read from this author, and it's part of a series. Even though I haven't read the earlier books, it was easy enough to understand the main character's past.
It starts off like a normal mystery. There's a woman who escaped a serial killer as a child and she's living in fear her whole life that he'll come back to get her. Now she thinks she knows where he is, so she tells her contact at the FBI (Noel). He then asks for from another friend (Jackson Cooper or Coop) to analyze the evidence. Coop then tells Darby about the case and then he goes missing.
This regular-seeming story soon progresses to a whole lot more. It's super violent with an unexpected twist to the story.
I would read more from this author.
I read this whilst on a month's vacation earlier this year, but overlooked leaving a review. I was pleased to have received 'Every Pretty Thing' via Netgalley and this is my honest review.
This was a page turner and one that I very much enjoyed. I am not going to write what the story was about for fear of spoiling for others, plus my brain has gone a little rusty since reading this novel. I will certainly read more by this author.
Another brilliant story by Chris Mooney in the Darby McCormick series.
Well, I certainly made a mistake with this book. Turns out Darby McCormick is one of my favourite characters - how is this the first book I have read in the series by Chris Mooney?? I will definitely be going back to the beginning with these!
In this book, Darby gets a call for help from her friend Coop - what follows is a dark turn of events with some twists that you won't see coming!
Loved this book! 5 out of 5....now show me the others!
I was a little disappointed in this one. It was dark and twisted, and I didn't care much for the main character. The storyline was okay, but this book just didn't live up to my expectations.
This was the first book I have read by Chris Mooney. I thought it was a pretty good thriller with an especially tough protagaonist. I found this book to be one of many in the series. I am looking forward to reading one of the earlier books from this author. Thank you for the opportunity to review this book.
