When Geoffrey's business goes upside down, everything changes, especially for his wife Olivia. This is her story and it's quite sad in parts. Still, a good read.
Book was well written, story line had truth to it and all the characters were believable to me. I'm not sure had others will like it but it's a good read for me.
The story was ok but a few too many unlikeable characters for me to say I really enjoyed this book. I can imagine it will be a popular holiday read as it doesn't take much effort
Lots of issues touched on but not all addressed to satisfaction. The boarding school location added interest but not enough to make it onto my best reads list.
Olivia has it all - a good husband, a clever son and a beautiful old manor house - that is until Geoffrey's business goes bankrupt and they lose everything the house the lot. Geoffrey has to go and live with his widowed mother, who Olivia has never got on with and so it is with relief that she is offered a live in job at her son's boarding school.
Can their marriage stand this sort of loss though and soon the cracks start to appear - Olivia is glad that she is going back to her room at the school and doesn't want to be with Geoffrey at this mothers.
A good story with lots of side issues to contend with as well as the state of the marriage - not light beach reading but still enjoyable
This book is very dark. It wasn't the writing that was bad but the story was so sad and depressing. Maybe the story is too close to reality for my taste.
What a delightful and enjoyable read. It catches the readers imagination and there is plenty of real life emotion in there to make you relate to the characters. A good read
Really enjoyed reading this book. Interesting storyline and characters
This was my first novel to read by this author. She writes beautifully, with strong imagery and beautiful prowse.
The story immediately grabs the reader, with a strong opening chapter. The book is not fast paced, but it is engrossing, pulling the reader in. The main character, Olivia, speaks of "the tangled undercurrents that swirled beneath", and this is what makes this book so fascinating. There is a sense of tension building, as you wait for the inevitable crash. When everything finally comes to a head it is shocking and unexpected.
A fantastic book, readable and fascinating. Highly recommended.
Olivia and Geoffrey's marriage unravels after the loss of their house and business. Olivia begins work as a house mother at her son's boarding school, while Geoffrey wallows in self pity. Like watching a car crash, you won't be able to look away as disaster looms. A good read.
