This was my first book by this author and I'm always thrilled to find another series to delve into. I really enjoyed the character of Percy Peach and I was kept guessing as to 'whodunnit' right until the end.
A strong 4 stars
Felt incredibly outdated until I realised this is a new edition first published in 2003.
Murder at the Lodge has everything a reader like myself could hope for; cleverness of characters, humor, surprise twists. This was my first book by JM Gregson and was not disappointed. I will be adding this author to my favorites list.
Felt very typical of a lot of books. had been looking forward to it as it was a lodge book and part of my heritage. But just felt the book was ok and no more
Well, the storyline is good,it is a classic British murder mystery. Most of the characters are well developed and believable....but for 3 characters, the superintendent, DI Peach and his partner (both professional and personal)DS Blake. They are bordering on the slapstick side ,without being very funny. Pity...
Straightforward (except for the odd Irish connection), detective procedure book, centred around a murder at a masonic lodge. What a great idea! This was my first Peach/Blake detective book and quite liked them as a couple of sleuths.
This is a fun little mystery, much in the realm of Agatha Christie. Peach has what appears to be a closed room mystery, or does he? As his team digs further into the background of the victim, they realize things are definitely NOT what they seem at the Mason Hall, and Peach's quote of " 4 out 5 of all serious crimes in the village are committed by a Mason" may have some truth to it. But as secrets become exposed Peach realizes they have not one, but too many suspects. Can he figure out who the correct one is? Has the past come back to kill the victim? This is a quick read that lovers of traditional mystery will greatly enjoy!
I just cant get enough of GM Gregson, whether it Peach or Lambert, the books are just entertaining. Plenty of red herring, suspects and (not so much in this one) but surprise endings. With this one it was the journey that made the book very readable and enjoyable. Just fabulous.

DI Percy Peach and DS Lucy Blake are called out to investigate a killing. A killing at an Inn hosting the Masonic Lodge Ladies’ night. Finding out about the dead man's personal life results in quite a few suspects. Can that vital clue to point out the murderer be found.
An interesting mystery with an easy writing style.
Inspector “Percy” Peach combines the genius of Morse with the cleverness and humor of Inspector Frost. Reading Murder at the Lodge was an absolute pleasure. Readers get not only a well thought out murder mystery, but a lead who has a distinct talent for unnerving suspects (and “taking the piss” with (aka taunting) his less than competent superior, Superintendent Tucker) I had to smile every time Peach out thought and out spoke both those he questioned and his boss. The supporting characters were also well developed, even those with small roles such as Tucker’s Brunhillde of a wife. The murder itself was intriguing - lots of suspects, lots of different motives and little physical evidence. I was glued to the page as each layer upon layer was revealed.
Murder at the Lodge has everything a lover of British police procedurals could want: a clever inspector, well developed characters, a challenging mystery and just the right amount of humor to balance the grit. Naturally, I loved Murder at the Lodge and hope to have the opportunity to read many more novels featuring Inspector “Percy” Peach.
5/5
I received a copy of Murder at the Lodge from the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
