About Last Night by Catherine Alliott is a contemporary romance and a really fun, light hearted read.
The action alternates between Ludlow (very near to where I live) and London. Catherine Alliott's descriptions were wonderful. I 'felt' the clean, fresh country air which contrasted with the noise, smells and hustle and bustle of London. One 'felt' freeing, the other stifling. I much preferred the Ludlow location.
The book had many humorous moments that kept me chortling. It was easy to empathise with many of the situations creating the humour, as the book was written in the first person. Grown up children, horrified at some of their mother's antics, had me in stitches!
Family and good friends are important. They contrasted sharply with some less than honest characters.
Animals are important in our lives. I loved their inclusion in the story and how they were viewed as an integral part of the family.
The small town, warm and welcoming feel of Ludlow was easy to recognise, having visited there many times. I really 'felt' included in the book.
About Last Night is a wonderful, light hearted read for anyone fancying a few hours of pure escapism.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
I have read a few Catherine Alliot books and have never been disappointed, this book is no exception. I loved it from start to finish.
I thought it was really funny in parts and I kept thinking back to scenes when I wasn't reading the book. I loved the character of Molly and her children and their reactions to her behaviour especially Nico. It was a real treat to read a book that made you feel happy and content.
Although some of the characters are predictable it didn't spoil it. I also thought there was an element of seriousness as well, the way Molly loses her husband is tragic and you can feel for her because of the incident before it. I loved the descriptions of farming life and the contrast to city life. I left the book feeling that I knew all the people in it and was sad when it had finished.
A fantastic storyline, full of ups and downs, rights and wrongs, but human all the way throughout. Loved the twists and turns. All very believable and I read it in a day as I didn't want to miss anything
Couldn't put the book down really funny. I hadn't read anything by this author before. Intend to buy some more to read on my holidays.
Really good book. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Molly and her husband move from London to rural hertordshire to run a farm, it was her husbands dream and they make a good go of it, then her husband dies and she is left to run the farm and raise their 3 children alone.
Her children are vile and they irritated me beyond words, i was hoping poor Molly could dump them off on a grandparent because they were so obnoxious to Molly it was unreal.
I moved from the city to the country so understand how hard it is and the challenges you face and so really felt for Molly in parts, but then found her a total wimp in others that she was so weak and incapable, it was embarrassing at times.
However when she is left a house in a will, things get interesting and Molly suddenly gets multiple love interests. It became quite amusing then and i enjoyed this part of the story a lot.
Didnt really see the ending coming so its always nice to get a good twist.
Overall i thought it was good fun and worth a read.
About last night… by Catherine Alliott a funny four-star read. I have read a few books by this author but this is the first one I have read in a while and I loved how it was like picking up a conversation with an old friend. This is a funny, captivating story of second chances. What could be a depressing and cold is wrote in a funny and laugh out loud manner. Molly’s life has been thrown into turmoil several times, her husband has dies, and after chasing the good life in Rural Herefordshire an old relative of her late husband’s dies and leaves her a townhouse in London. What would you do, leave your small holding that seems to be running over in mud for a place in the city? And both places have their own complications, a man in each place and each has his own story to tell. The only problem is that the men seem to come with their own set of intentions and not all of the are honourable. Will Molly see that before it’s too late?
Loved this book. Hooked from very first page.
It dragged every emotion from me.
I would recommend this book. It was well worth the read and every star I awarded it.
A lovely, cosy story that has just the right level of sweetness. Definitely a book to curl up with for easy feel good reading.
This was fabulous from start to finish so much so I couldn't put it down. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a romantic novel that completely transports you!
I have been reading a lot of thrillers lately so this was a pleasant change. Although it was a bit predictable it was well written, an easy read and quite funny in places.
If you are looking for a lighthearted holiday read then you won't go too far wrong to choose this.
4 shiny stars from me
This book had me in stitches at times due to Catherine's way with words. Molly and David move from London to a farm in the country to live the Good Life! Ok so it's David's dream and not Molly's but hey that's marriage for you! However shortly after moving David dies and it's just Molly and her 3 teenage children, lame animals and a rickety house. But when David's uncle dies a man who they have never met let alone knew existed they have the chance to return to London. The book is just full of funny stories and interactions between Molly, the kids, and the local vet who seems to clash with her at every opportunity. Yes, it's obvious what happens but that doesn't detract from the good writing and enjoyable read. A lovely summer story which made me laugh out loud at times.
A pleasant holiday read. In the usual style of Catherine Alliott, our main character is a bit of a mess with her life and relationships. She is trying to get over massive amounts of guilt by staying with a rural lifestyle she hasn't really embraced to try and atone for past mistakes. An inheritance opens up a way back to her old way of life in the city, but the events that unfold make her revisit the past and look to the future to see what she really wants. Entertaining, however you do sometimes wonder how the main character actually gets out of bed in the morning without something going wrong! A nice holiday read.
I really enjoyed this book. It was very funny and I would definitely buy it as a gift. I hope it turns into a series so we can follow up on the characters lives, there is certainly lots of angles for follow up books!
A Thoroughly enjoyable read which I found difficult put it down.
Molly moved from London to a farm in Herefordshire with her husband and children but then he was killed in an accident. Molly struggles to make ends meet and hold the farm together but then a will reading from a relative on her husbands side changes things for her. However, there is someone living in the house she inherits.
It took me a while to get into this book but that's probably because I haven't read any Chick Lit for a while. Once I got past halfway I did start to enjoy the story, albeit find it a little bit predictable. I would still recommend this book for a summer read.
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fabulous book! Molly struggles to keep her too-big-for-a-smallholding, not-big-enough-for-a-farm afloat by working all hours not only with the animals but also with numerous mail order businesses with hilarious - and sometimes disastrous - results.
The characters in this novel are all well-developed and completely believable, and the storyline itself is realistic. The writing is clever and polished, and this novel has lots going on. I loved that it continued right up until the final few pages with no indication of how it was going to end.
All in all, a very satisfying read and one which has propelled Catherine Alliott right up my favourite authors list. Full five stars and highly recommended from me.
I received an arc via Net Galley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinions.
I hadn't read a Catherine Alliot book before so was unsure what to expect...something too girly? A bit too chick lit? I was wrong. It was a great read. Great characters and plenty of laughs. The first few pages didn't grab my attention but after about thirty pages I was hooked. Read it fairly quickly and would be a good recommendation for a Sunday afternoon chill or a beach book.
I did read this book and it held my attention but I would not say that I enjoyed it. I found the characters were generally very unlikeable, and I didn't really care what happened to any of them, The heroine in particular seemed was incredibly stupid, and her decisions and behaviour seemed completely ludicrous.
great read and easy to follow story line. look forward to reading more from this author.
A fabulous read. Entertaining throughout. Would recommend. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book.
