This novel was a long read. The author is very detailed and descriptive in her writing. This novel has several plot twists and things that you do not see coming. It also contains action, adventure, betrayal, magic, and some romance. The novel is told in third person but you see multiple perspectives.
Halthris is a female nomadic Tanathi that does not want to settle down. She and others of the Tanathi discover the Ska'i, savage barbarians intent on killing everyone to satisfy the blood lust of the one they worship. They go to warn their tribe and to warn the city of Zithirian. Halthris is a proud and honest woman who speaks her mind. This is unusual for a woman which causes the king not to believe her, but one of hos sons, Ansaryon, does. His other son, Tsenit, is his favorite. However, appearances can be deceiving. When betrayed and the Ska'i attack Zithirian, Halthris and Ansaryon long with others flee to safety. Ansaryon is able to use magic and he forms a bond with Halthris. The story discusses their adventures and preparation for war, along with seeking allies to help stop the evil in Zithirian and for Ansaryon to reclaim the throne. While they prepare for the trials they will face, Ansaryon and Halthris become friends and later feel love for each other. But danger and spies loom everywhere and nothing is at it appears to be. Secrets will be revealed and it determine the outcome of the city and the rest of the empire.
