Panic Button is a story about family. Family of blood, marriage and work.
When police officers are targeted and murdered one after another it can only be one person………one of their own. But why? What’s the motive? Or does it even matter…………
This story started out slow for me and picked up as it went along. I was expecting a bit more for an ending but I guess I will read on to the next book to find out what happens.
I found it difficult to get into this book, kept trying to pick back up but each time I couldn't continue. I'm not normally defeated and have to finish to the end but this wasn't for me.
This for me was a fairly ok read but it was nothing special. Maybe I need to read the first book to appreciate the characters and get the background story.
This is the second in a series featuring DS George Elms and in this case I definitely would recommend reading the first book (Bodily Harm)
I love the fact this is written by a serving Detective; it seems so much more realistic. It's full-on action from the off with very little let-up throughout.
While on suspension from his previous case, George finds himself named as prime suspect in the very current case where even his colleagues and friends doubt his innocence. Can he find evidence to clear his name? Who is setting him up? And why?
If you don't like cliffhangers then here's your advanced warning to have book 3 (Blood money) at the ready!
Thanks to Joffe books for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
A killer is targeting Langthorne police officers in this British police procedural. As each is murdered, they are forced to engage their radio panic button and read a message to broadcast their deaths to other officers on the force.
I didn't really enjoy this book; police procedurals aren't my favorite. It also was the second book in a series, and since I haven't read the first book, which apparently ended in a cliffhanger, I felt like I was starting to read in the middle of the story. There is a third book and soon to be a fourth book. This book doesn't truly end but instead has a cliffhanger designed to force the reader to buy the next book in the series. I resent being manipulated by an author in that manner. This book seems like just a part of a book rather than a standalone novel. It was interesting, but I wanted an ending.
Cannot recommend this author more strongly - love these books and once again left wanting more....can't wait for the next instalment!!
This book hits the ground running and doesn't let up. Action galore. I was all set to give this five stars and then I got to the last page.....cliffhanger. Oh how I HATE cliffhangers!! Well, there went that five star review. I won't be reading any more of this author's books.
I was absolutely gripped from page one, someone killing police officers and making them press their panic button, trying to link George Elms to the murders and his own battles he faced . I was on edge the whole time and gutted when and how it ended I need the next book now to see what happens to George!! This would make a great series
A very fast paced tale from a serving police officer that doesn't paint the force in a particularly positive light.
Fast paced, gritty and with plenty of twists and turns.
A must read for fans of British crime fiction.
Action packed from the first page to the last. Corrupt police, gangsters and enough violence to keep fans happy. I do feel sorry for George Elms, he has lost everything. From hero to villain in one fell swoop. Not your normal police procedural but I look forward to book 3! A really interesting plot and a very good read.Thank you Net Galley and Joffe Books for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads. and Amazon.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire. George Elms’s life has been a mess since the accidental shooting of his partner at the end of Bodily Harm. Plagued by tinnitus from an explosion, he’s begun drinking heavily and is currently separated from his wife and child. With his career in tatters, it doesn't look like it can get worse, until he is blamed for the brutal murder of four police officers. He is being framed, but he has few friends he can turn to. The Langthorne officials want the case closed, as do Elms’s enemies - preferably with Elms DOA.
Panic Button is a direct follow up to Bodily Harm. Neither are your standard British police procedural. There are a lot of bodies, and far more violence than I’m used to - and I read a ton of British police fiction. The police are easily manipulated. It’s easy to feel for George Elms, but readers like a little hope, and at the end all you can say is that he's still alive. If you are looking for a standard British police procedural, I wouldn't recommend Panic Button, but if you are looking for a unique police thriller, I would definitely recommend it. The novels have to be read in order.
4 / 5
I received a copy of Panic Button from the publisher and Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

4 and 1 / 2 stars
This is a great book by a very good writer. Charlie Gallagher knows how to tell it like it is and create a great deal of tension in creating his stories.
Someone is shooting police offers in the most public way – over their own police radios.
Since I won’t give too much away, this review will be brief.
The police are sure they have a viable suspect. They are so certain that they arrest him in the most vicious manner. But, what if he didn’t do it?
The ending of the book was a huge disappointment. (Which is why the book got 4 and 1 / 2 stars instead of 5.) I wanted something different to happen. But, I guess we don’t always get what we want, eh?
Enough said, I want to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this great book to read.
Intense, action-packed, tense, and quick. It fits a lot of story and action into these pages. I would definitely recommend reading the first book in the series first, which is great. You'll be able to enjoy it much more as a continuation. I'm absolutely looking forward to the next one, especially with how this one ended.
Police officers are being murdered, and forced to press the rarely used emergency button on their radio right before their death. That means their fellow officers all hear their last breath immediately after chilling words that speak of the death of more of their own to come. Intense! The only little shred of evidence found after the death of several officers is a radio left behind at one of the crime scenes... George Elm's radio. He's been off the force since the events of the first book, and insists he has nothing to do with the murders. He spends most of his time nowadays drunk and seeing his wife and small child less and less, certainly not responsible. This is all he needs... clearly someone wants him to take the blame. But who?
I received a copy of this book from Net Galley and and Joffe Books, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.
Wow this book was great. Seriously couldn't put it down, didn't see the ending coming at all which was nice. Read it in a day because I needed to know what was going to happen.
Charlie Gallagher is an author new to me so I had no idea what to expect when I downloaded this book from NetGalley.com.
The Emergency Button or Panic Button we are told by the author is “located on the top of the handheld unit. It is coloured a bright red and is raised to allow easy and fast access when required. ”
Apparently, this button is seldom used but in this book, we are immediately drawn into a situation where not one but four police officers press the panic buttons. This immediately sets off action and panic and concern among the police officers in Langthorne Station. And then they find the prime suspect is one of their own. A disgraced officer who’s currently on suspension, but is he the killer or is it someone out for revenge? This is quite an involved story but giving any more details risk spoiling the book for other readers.
This book gripped me at the outset but then half way through I began to lose interest and found myself skipping a few pages.
I found George Elms and Samantha Robbins to be totally believable and I warmed to them both. Knowing of police officers and those with whom they come into contact only through what I read in newspapers I felt sure that such a story could happen in real life.
The story is well written and well researched and shows an understanding of police work obviously garnered in the author’s day job as a front-line police detective. I have given this book 4 stars as perhaps it merits another read at another time.
Couldn't down load to my tablet. Unable to read so can't leave a review
Panic button by Charlie Gallagher is a mystery and thriller read.
"A man is stood in front of me with a gun. He has a message for us all. He will come for us. He will come for us all, one by one. Until it's finished."
This is what a police officer says when told to push his panic button live on police radio. Then he is shot dead. OMG. Absolutely fantastic read with brilliant characters. I was hooked from page one, did not want to put it down. Love these types of books. I will now have to read Charlie Gallagher's other book Bodily Harm, can't wait.
Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy to review
What a terrific read. It's a real page turner. I'm loving this series and hope the third book will be available soon.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for a review copy of Panic Button, the second novel to feature DS George Elms of the Langthorne police.
Four police officers have been separately killed point blank in one day and evidence left at one scene put the suspended George Elms firmly in the picture as chief (and only) suspect.
Panic Button is a short but tense and exciting read as George tries to prove his innocence and the police try to make a case. It should be noted that this is book 2 in the series and while it will stand alone many of the characters from book 1, Bodily Harm, make a re-appearance and reference is made to its events so I would recommend reading the series in order, especially as this novel ends in a cliffhanger, setting the reader up for book 3.
The novel is go, go, go from the first page with relentless action and a fair amount of violence. It does not paint a pretty picture of the police with corrupt officers, senior officers determined to protect their career at any cost and officers prepared to leap to judgement without the facts.
The plot is interesting in the detail of operational constraints (there doesn't seem to be any) and is quite scary at the way armed officers seem to roam the countryside like paramilitaries. I'm less convinced by George Elm's actions which do not seem realistic.
I enjoyed Panic Button and have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read.
