"I always knew about Grandad's gift - being able to communicate with dead people. When he told me it was my gift too, I didn't understand what that would mean until I began to hear E.L. And that's when the trouble really started ...'

Not sure about this book, as it seemed to drag on a bit and lost it's way in the middle, but an interesting subject matter.

I actually started reading this book whilst I was on the plane to Charleston, South Carolina (as that's where I now live!) so for me that made it even more exciting. It was easier for me to imagine the past life because I was where everything took place. I even visited some plantations whilst reading the story! I loved the way it was written - it was an interesting and touching story to read! I'd happily read something else by Yvonne Cassidy.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It took a bit of getting into and I wasn't sure I could finish it. But finish it I did and I did like the story for the most part. I might revisit this one at a later date.

This is the story of Cassie, an American teenager living in the present day, and E.L. a teenage slave working on a cotton plantation in South Carolina. Cassie has inherited the gift of hearing the dead from her Irish grandfather and one day starts to hear the voice of E.L.

We follow Cassie living E.L.’s life through her thoughts, writing and travelling back in time to the plantation on which E.L. lives. This begins to cause problems in Cassie’s life, her parents think she is losing her mind because Cassie will constantly talk about E.L. and how she needs help. If E.L. is punished and hurt, Cassie feels her pain. Cassie wants to help E.L. escape from slavery and go north to freedom using the Underground Railway,

This was a complicated story due to the different stories being told and the methods of communication between Cassie and E.L. it seems better suited for a screen. It was definitely interesting with an ending that leaves you wondering what happened to EL and about Cassie’s abilities.
