I didn't realise that this was the 2nd in a series of books, and having not read the 1st I wasn't familiar with the characters.

It was a slow starter for me BUT once I had a hold of who was who I was gripped! So many shocking twists and turns to this story! I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of Anne Buist's work!

The books about Natalie King give some pretty good insight in the mind of someone battling mental illness. The ups and downs are sometimes hard to hear about, but this is what makes the story more authentic. In this new book Natalie is still on the mend after the big blowout she had from the last case and she is forced to take a lot more medicine than she likes, moves to a new town and take a new job, research instead of working in a regular praxis. In the beginning it seems to go well, but then she meets an old school mate and discovers that her new boss lost his wife a while ago. When also his second wife dies, Natalie is not sure it wasn’t murder and her new boss might be the one who killed his wives. Dark, a little disturbing, but a great read, a real page-turner. In the end, when all the questions where answered, it shows how brilliant a thinker Natalie really is. If only she could get a hold on her personal life too.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley and Legend Press!

I have not read any other books in this series but that did not seem to matter. I like the character of Natalie and it is good to see am honest character who has their own difficulties but can reflect on these and still manage. Overall, a well-constructed and well-paced novel that keeps the reader guessing right to the last page.

All the ingredients necessary for a compelling psychological thriller are here and it’s a well-constructed and well-paced novel that keeps the reader guessing right to the last page. Natalie, the main protagonist, is an unusual and engaging character, a psychiatrist who has her own psychological demons to contend with, and whose mental health is always on a knife edge. The author is a psychiatrist herself and knows what she is talking about so the mental health issues portrayed here feel very authentic. There is much to enjoy and admire here, but I felt that the subject matter ran out of control as the novel progressed and by the end became far too melodramatic. Natalie herself makes some crazy decisions, not least in relation to Frank, the other main protagonist of the novel, who unfortunately is not a very convincing character. It all seemed to get a bit out of hand and although I was kept reading to find out the conclusion the novel lost credibility by the end. It just about works as a stand-alone novel although there are frequent references to Buist’s earlier book, and I felt that it was helpful to have read that one too. So a cautious thumbs up but I hope that future books in the series are somewhat reined in.

Unfortunately I read this book as a stand alone. Sometimes in a series this is possible, but not in this case, and I definitely think it influenced my appreciation of the book. At times I was overly confused and unfamiliar with characters who clearly had a much larger role in the first book.

I though that this was an interesting spin on the current crop of psychological thrillers on the market right now. Natalie, the forensic psychiatrist central to this series, is just as in need of treatment as her clients. This made for an interesting read and made me question just how reliable Natalie's impressions of the Malosevic family were, which created a delicious sense of unease and confusion.

Natalie is an interesting character and her being bipolar is dealt with very well, both in terms of Natalie's development and acceptance of what the condition means to her, and how it impacts those around her and her working environment.

A good read and I will go and look up the first book in the series.

Ms. Buist has come up with a highly sympathetic character for whom misadventure seems to have an affinity. Though she craves a quiet, uneventful life immersed in simple research, trouble seems to find her... and when her new boss just happens to be married to an old nemesis, she knows she's in for a wild ride, like it or not. And wild ride it is! I thoroughly enjoyed the palpable thread of evil intent that runs rampant throughout this book, and look forward to future offerings from this talented author.

Anne Buist followed up her first book in the Natalie King Forensic series with one that has certainly earned its place beside the original. This one picks up very close to where Medea’s Curse ended so you really should read that one before this if you haven’t. Many of the characters from Medea have returned and the author has written this one as if you’ve read the first so there’s not a lot of recap to help you in understanding background context. If you liked the first one though then you’ll be very happy with Dangerous to Know.

Buist knows how to write a book that will have you turning pages faster than you’ve ever done before as you become engrossed in her original plot lines where she’s made sure to provide the reader with plenty of red herrings as well as surprising twists and turns you never saw coming. Just when you think she can’t get any better an explosive climax takes you through to a nerve-wracking conclusion.

Along with a great writing style that provides attention grabbing plotlines, Buist has proven a talent for intriguing and diverse character development. She generally shies away from stereotypes while embracing realism and uniqueness in her people. I like that she made her main character, Natalie, more relatable and flawed than what you normally see in thrillers. I felt she handles her bipolar disorder well without making Natalie into a stereotype or ridiculing mental illness even inadvertently.

She definitely leaves you wanting more when the last page is reached.

Natalie King is a forensic psychiatrist has psychiatric problems of her own. She’s just left a psych ward after becoming severely depressed and plans to relax i the country , taking a mindless job in research at a local college. Natalie’s plans for a low-key lifestyle fall by the wayside when she finds herself attracted to her boss, a man married to an old acquaintance of Natalie’s. A very unfriendly acquaintance. Natalie knows she should stay away from Frank, but the more she learns about him, the more compelled she is to stay by his side. But Frank has some ugly secrets and a past that will repeat itself. Buist writes a twisted thriller that will catch readers unaware. Loved it
