This is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining read, which has stood the test of time pretty well. First published in 1937, it’s the story of Jacky Collins, who through his own native intelligence and the support of a few key figures in his life, manages to escape his unpromising start in life to become a successful young man. A real rags-to-riches story, evocative of its time and place, and the coming-of-age tale of a quite remarkable young man. It’s a light read that doesn’t aspire to be any more than that, but I found it a real page-turner.

Vivid picture of London during a tumultuous time and a sharp, vibrant protagonist. A quick and enjoyable read.
