I’ll admit that I did receive a copy on NetGalley years ago, but I didn’t download it in time so I was never able to review it. However, I found the audiobook on Spotify, so I finally listened to it!
The Vanishing of Audrey Wilde is split between two timelines. In the past, Margot and her three sisters go back to Applecote Manor, where they haven’t visited since their cousin Audrey went missing.
In the present, Jesse and her husband move in to the manor in an attempt to strengthen their relationships. In particular, she is struggling to connect with her step-daughter. Throughout both these storylines, there is tension within relationships, and the question of Audrey’s disappearance in the background.
I really liked the writing. I thought the setting really came alive and I could really fell a difference between the two timelines, which was good. I did prefer the 1950s section, especially the dynamic between the sisters. Jesse frustrated me a bit, but I enjoyed seeing everything come together at the end.
The mystery of what happened to Audrey is what ties these timelines together. However, I found the actual reveal a bit underwhelming. In fact, I felt that the relationships between the characters developing and changing was a much more important part of the story.
The pace was slow, which doesn’t necessarily bother me, but it wasn’t a fast paced mystery. Some things seemed to change so suddenly at the end, and I did want some more explanations in parts. A lot of the scenes in the present didn’t feel necessary, so I wonder what the book would have been like if it has just focused on the sisters.
Generally, this was an enjoyable read, and I liked the audiobook narration. I don’t think it’s one I’ll revisit, but I don’t regret picking it up.
I really loved the premise of book and the detail was very good. However I did get lost off a bit towards the middle. Complex and enjoyable sentence structure mixed with Rich relationship details really enhance the experience of reading this work..I really loved the premise of book and the detail was very good. An intriguing story you expect of a spooky manor-house mystery. Audrey’s absence is really felt and her mother’s growing obsession over her absent daughter really adds to the foreboding atmosphere. The sisters and their encounters with local boys bring the mystery of Audrey’s disappearance into the present and tensions rise effectively. The reveal is extremely satisfying as a result.
This was one of those gothic, rural, long hot summer kind of books that I love, that has you in a kind of dream state while reading. I loved the mystery, the intrigue and the winding storyline. This is a book I really enjoyed and would highly recommend, I feel like I need to read it again now I've thought about it again!
A great book that read well and had a great pace it was gripping and a brilliant page turner
Thank you Netgalley for a copy for an honest review
Received this book a few years ago but completely forgot to add my review.
Full of pace and a great storyline to boot. This is a great suspense which I'd recommend anyone to read. Love Eve Chase books.
Omg talk about a roller coaster read wow this book kept me on the edge of my seat threw out I just couldn't put it down this writer keeps you hooked and once your hooked your not letting go I found this book thrilling the characters were fantastic and well thought out and the little clues all the way threw keep you guessing until the end this book stays with you long after you close the book this book is well worth the read I promise you wont be disappointed
An interesting book that read a lot like historical fiction. I enjoyed the sibling relationships, family dynamics and pace. It kept me interested, but the last 10% or so did drag a little, so for that I can't give a full 5 stars.
It took me a while to read but a very good plot characters are strong you get to know them so well I did find this book just ok I did get grip but I enjoy the plot it just did not grip me
Good. Kept me guessing till the very end, even though at times it was a bit confusing and disjointed due to dual timelines as it wasn't made clear which timeline was what until halfway through the chapter.
I think if you liked Ruth Rendell's A Fatal Inversion you'd enjoy reading this. I liked this book. Definitely one to read during the day rather than at night as I"m a total scaredy cat.
A beautiful novel which is full of mystery. The writing is excellent and I'd definitely recommend this novel.
This is my second book by Eve Chase (the first one was Black Rabbit Hall, which I loved) and I'm glad to say that I enjoyed this a lot. I found that the split present/past narrative disrupted the pace a lot in the first half of the book, but in the second half things picked up and I finished it in one go. I loved the exploration of female relationships here - mother/daughter, stepmother/stepdaughter, sisters, cousins/friends... all of them different and all of them rich and deep. My biggest "but" here is that the ending was too perfect for my liking, after a whole book of complex relationships and seemingly unsolvable obstacles everything was tied up too nicely to be believable. Still a very recommendable book - fans of Kate Morton, Eve Chase is one author to keep your eye on!
A long hot summer, a Cotswolds manor house fallen into ruin, a dark secret hidden since the 1950s
I was hooked from start to finish
This was a creepy and poignant book about a girl who goes missing and her memory haunts the family. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
With thanks to Netgalley and Penguin
The vanishing of Audrey Wilde is a good steady book that I found enjoyable and would recommend to others.
This book seemed a bit odd to me. I was left confused by the different stories, and I wasn’t left intrigued or in suspense. I’m afraid this one just wasn’t for me.
Really enjoyable read. Good characters and a Good story. Well worth a read. Think others will enjoy.
