Thanks Nedtgalley. What a fantastic fantastic book, great characters who live in one big house. You will absolutely love this book.
Well.... this was quite a surprise. I expected something quite light about residents of a house, and it was, but it was also so much more. There were so many twists that I just didn't see coming, it made for a really compelling read and kept me gripped throughout the story.
The main story is about the residents of No.24 Merrion Road and there are quite a few characters to figure out initially, but it doesn't take long to get a handle on who lives where. The characters live in a large Georgian house in Notting Hill over three floors and a basement. Sarah lives in Flat A t the top of the house (a child psychologist and is the main character throughout the book), Leo and Helena live below in Flat B (Leo owns an antique shop and Helena is an interior designer), new arrivals Jane and Tom live in Flat C at the bottom of the house (Jane is an property search consultant sourcing properties for rich clients and Tom is an actor), and there are two smaller flats in the basement where Lisa (a carer for the elderly) and her little girl Una live, with old and grumpy Mavis in the other basement flat, along with her rude and noisy Cockatoo, Peck, who has lived there forever.
The book starts off at Leo and Helena's wedding reception in the house, which Sarah has attended but eventually manages to escape back to her own flat. Leo and Sarah used to be married until he had an affair with Helena, so quite why Sarah was even at the wedding is still a puzzle to me. They were all trying to be adult about it and moving on. Not something I would have done.... he had an affair under her nose for goodness sake and they all still live in the same house! Sarah started out quite irritating as she obviously still loved Leo and he knew it. He also loved himself though and thought all other women automatically adored him. Sarah did let him get away with that initially, until she finally managed to get a backbone later in the book.
Jane and Tom moved into No.24 early on in the book and breathed new life into the house, drawing everyone in the into their circle of happiness and love of life, especially Jane, I loved her character. The residents of the house slowly started interacting more with one another, instead of just passing each other in the hallways as they used to do, and we slowly got to know everyone's story.
I don't want to spoil the story by going into all the details but it's basically about everyone's relationships slowly developing and changing. As I said there are quite a few twists and turns that I really didn't see coming, one minute I was thinking one way about someone and then it was completely turned on it's head - wonderful writing, really kept me on my toes. But it was also a lovely story about how being more kind to one another really changed the whole vibe of the house and its occupants and made everyone pull together in a crisis (towards the end of the book) and help each other out and actually become friends, some closer than others but friends nonetheless. Lovely satisfying ending and altogether just a wonderful book that I would highly recommend.
This is a great book with a varied ensemble cast of characters and many inter-twining story lines - just the sort of thing I enjoy. This was easy to read and would be the ideal thing to take with you on holiday. Having a child psychologist as the central character made it a bit different.
Sarah lives on the top floor of No. 24, her ex husband Leo and his new wife live one floor below, Jane and Tom have just moved in on the ground floor and Mavis lives in the basement in one flat and Lisa and her daughter Una live in the other basement flat.
Sarah has been divorced for about a year, her ex Leo has just remarried but wants to keep a relationship going with Sarah. She needs to refurbish her flat so that she can sell it and give Leo half the proceeds. Jane and Tom who have just moved and they seem like a lovely couple but Sarah has feelings for Tom and he for her. Mavis who lives in the basement is grumpy and unpleasant and Lisa's boyfriend has just left her and their daughter has stopped talking.
This was a enjoyable book where we see the way the residents of the house work together to help Una start talking again, we watch as friendships blossom, a romance evolves and there is a good, unexpected twist towards the end. A lovely heartwarming read.
Fun read with captivating characters. I did not expect the plot twist involved and really enjoyed reading this overall. Read it in one evening.
Wow! This book is jam packed! Lots of little individual stories going on for the handful of characters that live in different floors of one big house.
Its not long before you are really familiar with the characters and get attached to their stories.
I think its lovely how we see all the friendships bloom and how they all pull together and get through rough patches. They all seem to look out for one another. Some of the characters going further and getting romantic with one another.
Just a beautiful read, like a breath of fresh air. Very heart warming and easy to read.
A great 5 Stars from me!
