Enjoyed every page of this thriller. Could not read fast enough. Kept me on edge till the end. Will surely check other books by the same author.
I have eagerly read the three previous books in this series so i was thrilled when i got to read this one and i wasn't disappointed. I loved the story progression with Erika and her struggles within the police and the politics of her job while she tried to find the killer. There were several very good twists and as always it was excellently written.
4.5 stars
I really enjoyed reading this book and towards the end I just wasn't able to put it down, not until I knew for sure what happened. I liked that it centered a bit about privacy in social media and how easily we are to trust someone we haven't met or seen at all.
I haven't read any other book in the "Detective Erika Foster" series, but nevertheless I was still able to follow the story easily. I am intrigued by everything that happened to Erika so I do plan to start from book 1.
~Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for allowing me to read the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.~
Robert Bryndza does it again with Last Breath. My body was tense and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it.
Detective Erika Foster is desperate to work on a murder investigation when a young girl's body turns up in a dumpster. Her determination pays off and she is soon on the team. She is the one who links it to another case and discovers that it wasn't a one off killing but a serial killer they were dealing with.
The build up of suspense escalates throughout the whole of the book and I'm sure I was holding my breath for a lot of it.
Erika's relationship with Peterson has developed a little but I'm still not convinced he's the right one for her. She has become a lot better at following protocol but she does make a mistake which at one point seems like history is repeating itself.
There is another investigation which is being carried out and I think that we will possibly find out more about that in subsequent books.
I think there could be something between Erika and Marsh in the future as I think they have chemistry.
I really like the relationship between Erika and Isaac as I think he is a great friend to her.
The only problem I have with a Robert Bryndza book is that it's always over too quickly.
Thanks to Bookouture for the Arc
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and Robert Bryndza for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review.
What can I say about this book? I absolutely loved this book! Best one yet!
Last Breath is the fourth book in the Erika Foster detective series, and although I think the book would be great as a standalone book, I recommend reading the first three, not because you need to, to follow the story, but because they were so good. I love the character of Erika, her interactions with the usual cast of characters as well as a few new ones. I love police procedural books and this has to be one of my favourite new series.
In this book, Erika has been demoted and it's killing her; she tries to be more accountable and to follow the rules, and it works, she gets back on the MIT to help solve a crime she feels a connection with. She gets to work with Moss, Peterson ( who I picture as Idris Elba 😍) and McGorry, they always gets the crime solved and I wasn't sure this time. This was by far the creepiest of villains, quite the cat and mouse game. High paced and adrenaline filled. Let me tell you, I read this in no time at all and stayed up way too late to finish it. It was well worth needing an extra cup of coffee to cope the next day.
Robert, keep writing, I can't wait to read the next one. Great series.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Erika Foster is back on the case in Robert Bryndza’s novel, “Last Breath”, the fourth instalment in this series.
In “Breath” Erika is no longer solving murders, and has instead been demoted to pushing paperwork in another department. However, when she catches wind of a possible serial murder who is meeting women online, holding them for days and torturing them before leaving their deceased bodies in city dumpsters, she immediately begs her way onto the case.
Although you don’t have to read the other novels in this series to follow along (since each plot is so different), it helps to have some background on the characters. Erika is such a great policewoman, full of grit and passion, a woman who has the gumption and proclivity to go after what she wants- regardless of the consequences. She continues to shine in this novel, although this time we get to see a bit of her human side as she struggles with the challenges that come with a new relationship.
Bryndza knows how to weave a great police drama- all the inner workings of a police force, including the relationships and personal politics- but he also brings his readers into the mind of the criminal in this novel, which I found particularly appealing. This novel lets us follow Erika’s progress, while at the same time we get to experience not only the mind of the victim, but also the criminal.
I have had the extreme pleasure of receiving the other three novels in this series as well, and I was really glad to get a chance to experience this one. Bryndza’s language is slightly choppy (perhaps due to the novelist himself living in Slovakia and being a British citizen and me…well, neither). I found some of the sentences to be either overly simplistic and the flow was not always consistent. The novel is easy to follow, however, especially after reading the first three novels and coming to understand the differences in police procedure and positions.
I really love the character of Erika and I was thrilled to see the more human side of her in this one. The ending will please Erika fans as well (no spoilers, I promise) and I hope that it leads to more Erika Foster novels. These novels will please any police procedural fan, and are a great read for anyone who loves crime fiction, powerful female protagonists, or stories about grisly murders caused by scary, psychologically damaged criminals.
So grateful that I had the oppourtunity to experience the continuing story of Erika Foster. A powerful, edge of your seat crime drama with one hell of a heroine.
This is the fourth Erica Foster book, and it doesn’t disappoint.
Girls are being kidnapped, tortured and killed and their bodies left in dumpsters, in remote London locations, away from CCTV cameras.
Erica becomes involved in the case by chance, but finds she wants to take more control, when she feels that the case isn’t being handled correctly.
This leads to an encounter with her old adversary (now) Superintendent Sparks, which ends unexpectedly, but she gets the case.
Alongside the investigation, the kidnapper’s story unfolds including some very unlikeable characters.
There are plenty of red herrings along the way, at one point, I thought the whole case was solved, only for another twist.
The old team are back together, and their relationships develop.
I’ve given it four, rather than five stars only because there was one unlikely coincidence, and if I was kidnapped with my phone, my first call would be to the police.
I look forward to the next book and will remember to be careful on social media!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.
Last Breath (Detective Erika Foster, #4) by Robert Bryndza has us falling right back into the life of Erika Foster and her team as they rush to solve yet another set of horrific crimes – this time involving the mutilated bodies of young women. But nothing is ever easy and Erika must fight her way through the powers that be to get what she wants –which is to catch the killer before he kills his current abductee.
While Erika can push everyone’s buttons she is very likable and relatable. The pace is fast and there is nonstop action but we get to also see the softer side of Erika. Her relationship with James is heating up and all her old friends are there to lend a helping hand/voice their opinions.
A definite read, even if you missed the first three. I can’t wait to see what is next. I received a copy through NetGalley and this is my honest review.
Robert Bryndza is fast becoming my favourite crime writer and he has come up with another 5 star read with book number 4 in the D.I Erika Foster series.
After leaving to take up a boring desk job at the end of book 3 Detective Erika Foster is back in the Murder Investigation Team this time trying to find the body in the dumpster murderer.
It is another fast paced, can't put it down thriller and I highly recommend it!
Wow I'm kind of scared by what this author is able to do to me! After being accepted to read and review this book pre-publication, I sat on it for several days, almost not wanting to start reading because it hit me how bereft I felt when I finished the previous book in the series. However I couldn't resist for too long and devoured it in 2 sessions. I am writing this with droopy eyes as I only got 3 hours sleep last night. I had to finish the book!!
It is a grippingly, really well written tale with plenty of twists and turns along the way ( but no so much that you literally lose the plot - I hate that). Tension & violence are carefully balanced with the humorous and romantic elements of the story. Erika has her frustrating flaws but you always find yourself rooting for her to get her man (the criminal and the lover). Rob's book are consistently strong and this is certainly another he can be proud of, I hope he is busy writing the next one - can't wait. A Highly Recommended Read!
This is another great addition to this exciting series. Full of excitement and suspense, I can't wait for the next one.
Wow, I started and finished this book in one day reading far later than I should. Page after page disappeared in a heart stopping race to the finish. Val McDermid's Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series is one of my favorites and this series by Robert Bryndza has the same anticipation. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
I did not regret the late night despite the early alarm call.
When the body of a young woman is found, severely tortured, in a residential area dumpster, Detective Erika Foster is one of the first officers on the scene. Horrified by what she has seen, her need to solve the case is hindered by one major fact - it's not her case to solve. Desperate to get involved, Erika unearths a link to the unsolved murder of another woman some months before. When a tragedy occurs at the station, she gets her wish and is soon trying to trace a killer who targets his prey on dating apps. With another woman missing, Erika knows time is running out before a third body is found.
Last Breath is the fourth of Robert Bryndza's 'Erika Foster' books and we are now seeing a different side to the detective. Known primarily for her doggedness and her refusal to back down, there is now a vulnerability about her as she embarks on her first relationship since the death of her husband. While this does not affect her work, it is clear that she is suffering from a lot of internal conflict - should she allow herself to be happy or will this besmirch the memory of her much-loved husband?
The killer is a particularly brutal one, keeping his victims captive for several days, torturing them until he finally administers the fatal blow. Like many books of this genre, in some chapters we get to see the events from the point of view of the perpetrator. He undoubtedly had a horrible start to his life, but I found it hard to empathise due to the barbaric nature of his crimes. It certainly makes you think about how social media sites such as Facebook can be used for improper means and is another stark reminder of how people should be wary about how much information they share online.
Robert Bryndza's books just keep getting better and, even though I've thoroughly enjoyed them all, I might have to stick my neck out and say this is my favourite so far! I read this one in a couple of sittings as I was unable to put it down! Hopefully book 5 is in the pipeline!
4.5 stars-another winner!!
This is the 4th installment of the Detective Erika Foster series, and I'm happy to say that this one does not disappoint!
Bryndza truly has a way with words. Not only has he created a strong yet at times vulnerable protagonist, he has surrounded her with a team of detectives that each have something to contribute to make the whole story come together. With each book he allows the reader to get to know Erika just a little bit better than the last book, but still not 10%. She still has some secrets left to be revealed.
He's also not afraid to get his hands dirty with violence, but it's never done in a way that makes you feel it was just for a reaction. These scenes are done incredibly well and used to draw the reader in, creating a mood and painting a picture of what's ahead.
Each of his books have a main plot, but there are always side stories going on throughout. It's never too much or too distracting, and he provides the perfect amount of closure at the end so it all comes together seamlessly. I often find myself being very disappointed when I've read that last word...
This particular story relies heavily on the use of social media, which I found incredibly fascinating. Not just in how the investigators use social media to assist them, but I was more disturbed by how it was used by the Killer. Creating a fake profile, friending people connected with the victim so when he finally reaches out, the victim feels safe to accept a friend request. Using social media to track their movements, establish a pattern. Getting their address and other personal information to help him plan. All so calculated, but so very real....It is just too easy to access this stuff, and it has really given me something to think about!!
I did take off a half star for the final confrontation, as I felt there were some details that didn't ring true, and honestly I don't think were needed. But again these were minor.
I'm looking forward to what Bryndza comes up with next for one of my top 5 leading police detectives. If it's half as good as this one, we are still in for a treat!

The 4th Installment of D I Erika Foster series and what a stonker it is. It's the best one yet.
A body is found in a dumpster brutally beaten up when Erik sets to investigate. Erika recognises a similarity to a murder that happened 4 months ago and realises there is a serial killer on the loose. With her old side kicks Moss and peterson they investigate. The killer grooms his victims online and sets up a date and then abducts them and tortures them. With the Killer very good at covering his tracks he messes up when he changes routes and is spotted on CCTV.
This is another excellent read that keeps you hooked on every page. I liked how the author has developed the characters even further, especially Erika. We see a a different side to her, a more vulnerable side. I also loved the ending it was heart stopping.
Last Breath is the latest book in the Detective Erika Foster series written by Robert Bryndza.
This is a gritty, fast paced book that will have you hooked from the very first page. I've always enjoyed Robert's books but each one just seems to get better and better.
A young woman's body is found battered and bruised in a dumpster and Erika is first on the scene only this time it's not her case. She's not used to being on the sidelines and does everything in her power to get herself assigned to the case. Finding a link to an earlier unsolved case and then discovering another body means Erika must race against time to find the killer.
Erika is a great lead character and you can find yourself identifying with her. Add into the mix her work colleagues Petersen and Moss and you've got a great trio.
This book is a tense thriller and impossible to put down. It's definitely a 5 star read! Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Robert for the chance to review.
I’d give this 3.5 stars if I had the half star option. It was good in that, especially toward the last half, I wanted to find out how Erika and her team found the guy who was kidnapping and torturing women. Obviously, you as a reader don’t want any innocent victims to be tortured and killed. However, I think it would have been more of a page turner if we knew more about the backgrounds of his vics or, even more important, the victims he has in his sights.
We saw things from the bad guy’s point of view, which I liked. But when we finally did get the perspective of a woman he tricked into meeting him by making up a fake profile online, she wasn’t a particularly likeable character. She wasn’t unlikeable, but she seemed like a vain, self-absorbed young woman who wanted fame. She was taking classes to get better at her art, but basically I got the idea she was pretty and wanted fame like so many people who, in my opinion, have no talent but want fame anyway. If I’d heard more about her really working on her art, I would have been even more sympathetic. Or if she helped out other people—a grandmother or the homeless, anything that indicated she gave a hoot about people other than herself—I would have cared even more, although by that point in the book, I just wanted to hear about the murderer’s mistakes enabling the cops to catch him.
Something that really bothered me was that some of the characters are referred to by their first name and some by their surnames. It’s OK that the lead cop, Erika, was referred to by her first name and the civilians were referred to by their first names, but some of the cops were mentioned either by their first names or their surnames, and there seemed no rhyme or reason to which was which. Even the love interest is referred to by his last name, whereas Erika’s subordinate was John, and some of the people she reported to went by their first names. I found it confusing keeping people straight because of this.
In terms of the cops tracking down the clues, Bryndza did a good job with describing the detective work. I could definitely see this author writing teleplays for the zillions of cop/crime/detective shows on TV.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.
Detective Erika Foster is back trying to solve another murder with her faithful team. This is the fourth book featuring Detective Foster and it doesn't disappoint. I was gripped from the first page. I think this is Robert Bryndza's best book so far. Looking forward to the next one!
Book 4 in the Erika Foster series and it's just as good as the first 3!
The consistently of the world he builds, the characters he forms and the mystery I like to think we help to solve is wonderful.
I always fall back into their world and will devour the books in a day, I have to know what happens. I'm invested in these characters and their lives and will continue to check for each new book with eager puppyness behaviour.
Please try these books, they're wonderful.
2 huge thumbs up from me and two paws up from my brothers dog too!
