Robert Bryndza continues with his winning formula in this latest in the Erika Foster series. Last Breath is a breathtaking read, fast and furious as the race is on to find a serial killer who disposes of his victims in the town’s dumpsters.
This is a difficult one to say much about without spoilers but what I can say without giving anything away is that I enjoyed knowing the identity of the killer before the end of the book, seeing the twisted logic and also the costly mistakes. For me, this is a very effective way of story telling when I can see both sides and ultimately observe as the world’s of the killer and police collide.
If anything I think this is my favourite of the series so far. Erika is becoming a little more human after her past tragedy and her relationships within the force continue to develop. I particularly like Moss who is an intelligent and loyal member of the team. Erika is in conflict with her superiors as usual, but then she wouldn’t be Erika without a little bit of her headstrong, the rules don’t apply to me, style.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
This is the fourth in the series of books featuring Erika Foster. In my opinion, the books are getting better and better. Rob seems to raising the bar with each book he writes. Roll on book 5!
When it comes to thrillers I'm more into serial killer stories and not single cases, but the last few pages of Dark Water had me on the edge of my seat.
DCI Foster and her team, Petterson and Moss, are the best and I love reading their interactions.
First I want to say that this series is great and that you really should start to read them from the beginning. Sure, they are readable as stand alone, but I think it's worthwhile to read from the start, to get to know, Erika, Moss, Peterson and the rest of the characters from the very start.
One of the reasons that I like this series so much is that I enjoy reading about Erika Foster, who is still struggling to move on after her husband was killed in the line of duty. She's practically married to her work and, despite her cautious steps towards a new relationship is Mark still present in her life, despite him being dead for so many years now. I do like to see her taking steps towards a relationship, she has not many friends and, despite being a good cop does she deserve a happy home life as well.
Robert Bryndza is such a great writer and he really manages to write compelling stories that just makes you think one more chapter and suddenly you are halfway through the book. And, Last Breath is not an exception. I'm not always that fond of following the killers POV, when you know who he is from the start, name, and everything, but now and then it works. And, this time it did. And, let me tell you that is one sicko. A really creepy dude that appalled me. But, then again, his family, the milieu he has grown up in seemed not really have made it easier for him. Still, something must be seriously wrong in his head.
Luckily Erika manages to persuade Sparks to let her take on the case. I was a bit surprised over the fact that it did seem like Erika and Sparks were finally burying the hatchet. Although without giving away too much, did Bryndza manage to really surprise me here. You just have to read and find out for yourself.
A great book, just as the previous and a must read if you like this series!
I love DI Foster's single mindedness and persistence in figuring creeps out. Have already pre-ordered the next in this series!
Firstly many thanks to netgalley for an arc of this book in return for my honest feedback - this book definitely does not disappoint! This is the fourth book in the fantastic Detective Erika Foster Series set in London, UK.
A young woman is found badly beaten and seemingly tortured in a dumpster and Erica Foster is one of the detectives first on the scene. At first she sets about deciphering the scene alone while she tries to get back onto the MIT she has been removed from ... her grit and determination is so evident as she works incessantly to find out who is doing this and why. She is tougher and more stubborn than ever - the perfect ingredients for a gritty detective and her character development does not disappoint!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and feel the series just gets better and better and darker and darker! A thoroughly gripping page turner! I cannot wait for the next in the series to see where Erika goes next and what grim challenge awaits her next!
I've read and enjoyed all the Erika Foster books so far, and I actually think this is the best. Erika and her team are trying to catch a killer who tortures and murders young women and disposes of the bodies in dumpsters around London. I like the way that we, the readers, know quite early on who the killer is and we follow his movements and mind set as the story progresses. It is a real page turner which will keep you enthralled right to the end. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
*5 Stars*
ARC kindly received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I love this series. Rob Bryndza does such a great job writing these storylines and characters, and I always get drawn into the story. I was so hooked on this one and when things were ramping up at the end I was getting that feeling of anticipation, waiting to see how things would play out.
This particular story line also puts a real focus on the dangers of being online and social media in todays society. Its such a huge part of everyday life that none of us really think twice about it anymore, but this book does highlight the possible dangers out there.
Once again I loved Erika, and there was a bit of new and softer side to her in a couple of parts this time, and I really loved that. Peterson, Moss, Issac and even John were back in this one which I loved, because of course they're favourites from the previous books.
I can't wait for the next books, well done to Robert Bryndza, I love these books!
Having read the previous 3 books in the series I couldn't wait to read this one. They just get better and better.
A fast paced thriller that I literally couldn't put down, I cant wait to read the next one so I hope Robert Bryndza is busy writing it!!
5 whopping stars from me.
Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to have read another brilliant offering by this fantastic author. I've been on a Robert Bryndza binge read, and was not disappointed by this entertaining, and enthralling read.
The author asked at the end of the book how the reader felt about using social media I this book.
The book addressed a very relevant point these days - what can you put out on social media, and what not. Not all and everyone is what they seem.
Brilliant, and I can't wait for the next one!
Well this book was as good as the hype it produced. Creepy and scary to think situations like what goes on in the book is so easily possible to happen to us. Great read
Loved this book! I loved the twists and turns .. one of the best in the series!!
Wow, this author just gets better. This is the 4th book in the series and kept me engrossed from the start. Cant wait to read more from this author. A brilliant five stars *****
Wow! Another brilliant book from Robert. Detective Erika Foster is back again. She is a bit of a maverick who cannot seem to work with some people. Yet with the right people, she inspires loyalty and respect. Young girls are going missing and found in dumpsters with horrific injuries. There doesn't seem to be a connection but if there is Erika will find it. I love all the characters and the story just grips me from the beginning right to the very last page. I literally cannot wait for the next instalment!!
A terrifying book with a real kick-ass female protagonist in the form of Alice Vega, a tough-as-nails investigator who goes where others fear to tread... which is why, of course, those with problems and mysteries to solve forgo the local PD and head straight for her. I love this woman; she's smart, she's tough, she's unrelenting, and the best part? She's absolutely fearless once "on the trail". Lots of suspense and cliff-hanger moments, and a satisfying read altogether. I'll be looking for more of Vega's escapades! Great read.
I really enjoying reading this series, patiently awaiting the next one!!!!!!!!!
Last Breath is book 4 in the Detective Erika Foster series and oh my goodness you are in for a roller coaster of a read. Having read all the books so far in the series I can definitely say they are all just blooming brilliant.
Erika is now working as part of the Project Team but when a body is found Erika has to fight to be part of the Murder Investigation Team, a place where she truly belongs. You really feel Erika’s frustration, she desperately wants to be involved and get back with her colleagues Moss and Peterson.
Erika is such a fantastic character, she’s full of determination, lets nothing stand in her way and I have loved getting to know her over the series of books. It’s funny how you can get really attached to a character, almost as if you actually care about them and Bryndza has created this type of character in Erika. I would definitely be calling on Erika if I was in trouble, well if she was real that is
Last Breath see’s a vicious killer stalking pretty young women online and this storyline really got me thinking about how many people I speak to on social media, people I have only ever met online. Are they actually who they say they are? Bryndza reveals who the killer is early on in the book so we get to follow his story, meet his family and work colleagues. You get right inside his mind and this gave me the chills, it really set in motion the paranoia about social media, especially having teenagers and they have been well warned again about the dangers.
I really don’t know how to do this book justice in this review, it was just utterly brilliant. Brynza has a way on drawing the reader in from the first page, he takes you on a roller coaster ride with many twists and turns and totally keeps you engrossed until the very last page. I found myself often sitting on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with anticipation.
So I think you can safely say I enjoyed this book and I will be highly recommending it. Last Breath could be read as a stand alone but in my opinion you really would be best to read the series, you get some back story to the characters and honestly they are all just brilliant. I’m really looking forward to the next instalment and hope there are many more to come.
Another pleasing read with real development in the life and career of Detective Erika Foster.
After throwing a strop when she was passed over in the last book we find her as far from the action a copper can be unless directing traffic.
However, she is moving on one of her former team and trying to forge a relationship when her past is so damaged and traumatic.
When he is called out to a murder scene in a terrible storm she feels it will be ok to tag alone. Like some addict she's soon high on the whole crime scene and can't help herself getting involved.
Can she break back into the murder squad? Meanwhile a new brush seems to be sweeping through the police, where you kowtow to the politicians and snuggle up with the top brass. Furthermore, a new direction is being taken which brings into question the old-fashioned policing methods.
Erika being Erika tries to break the case and draw conclusions others do not see and the consequences are that there could be a serial killer lose on the streets of London.
The author explores the darker elements of dating apps and the dangers of social media.
What frustrates the police is that the killer seems either very lucky of extremely meticulous in his planning. As there is plenty of DNA evidence but no links to identify the murder, from the time of snatching his victims to dumping their bodies.
Even though the culprit is identified to the reader quite early in the novel this only adds to the ratcheting up the tension as Erika's determination never to fail is initially thwarted by incomplete intelligence. Who will crack first the police under closer scrutiny of a murderer who surely is just one mistake away from being caught. The clock is ticking however, with another life at stake, Foster's sense of failure grows and death is just a breath away.
Last Breath
Detective Erika Foster #4
Robert Bryndza
4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a great psychological thriller. The author kept you on your toes as the minutes ticked by to save a girls life. Will they catch the killer in time?
If your looking for a great serial killer book, you should try this one. This is my 2nd Detective Erika Foster book. I would definitely suggest this to all my friends.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an arc in exchange for my honest review.
Love! I hadn't had the pleasure of reading books 1-3, something that will soon be remedied. This is right up my alley, suspenseful with a protagonist I connect with and root for.
Thank you to NetGalley for my copy of this novel.
