I’ve never read anything by this author before but was drawn to it by the description. It’s rare to come across a C19th romance set in an Arabian kingdom and I found this novel extremely enjoyable. Princess Tahira doesn’t want to be a commodity sold off in marriage and is pleased that her first two betrothals have fallen through, but her brother doesn’t intend that she remain unwed for very much longer. Tahira tells herself that she doesn’t want to marry because her sisters need her and she made a promise to her dying mother to look after them but that doesn’t explain why she escapes from the family harem to indulge her passion in history and archaeology. On one of her quests she bumps (literally) into surveyor Christopher Fordyce – her life will never be the same again. Recommended read.
