I have just sat and read The Last Piece of My Heart (short sample) in one sitting. I loved it and am sooo disappointed it's finished I need to read the full book now.
A great snipit of another great book by Paige.
This is the only book I have finished so far this summer. It is light and easy to pick up, despite the tragedy surrounding the narrative. I will admit to being a Paige Toon fan – there is something about the way she writes that just delights me. Maybe it goes back to the days when she was writing for Heat magazine (which I devoured on a Tuesday lunch sitting at my desk whilst ignoring the phone). Or maybe she is just a very talented lady. If you have read Paige Toon before then you know what to expect – an enjoyable romp that spans England to Australia. There is a hunky first love, an ever so attracted widower and a plucky heroine who is almost at home in her own skin. Add in a plethora of ex-boyfriends who may or may not be willing to return the piece of her heart that our heroine recklessly gave away in the pursuit of true love.
A rating out of 5 is difficult - I would go with 4.5 so I'll round up :)
I hadn't taken in that this was only a few sample chapters before I requested this book. What I read was very good and i would be interested in completing the novel. I like Paige's writing style and the concept of this story seemed to be slightly different.
I'm a huge fan of Paige Toon and have had my eye on The Last Piece of My Heart so it was great to be supplied with a sample of the opening chapters to whet my appetite for the full length novel.
The three chapters I read really had me hooked. I loved the idea of your first love taking an important part of your heart away, and Bridget's need to reclaim it resonated with me. The introduction of Charlie and April had me wondering if Bridget would remain with her rediscovered first love or if her future would be with the grieving husband of the woman she is ghost writing for.
Three chapters was enough for me to realise that I would like very much to read the whole of this book. I am adding it to my 'to read' list now. I really want to know what happens to Bridget!
I haven't read chick lit for quite some time and this chapter sampler was definitely an interesting and pleasant surprise. Toon's voice is perfect and writing realistic and effortless for the characters. The premise and the idea of the plot really gripped me because of how unique it is and I'm excited to see where the characters go in the end. Definitely getting a copy of this!
A promising start to this novel from the sampler. I can't wait to see where the story goes for Bridget. It has definitely grabbed my interest.
This was only a first chapter book, but it definitely left me wanting to read more. I instantly liked the characters and couldn't wait to purchase the full book to find out what happens next. I will review once I read in full!
I really enjoyed this sample. I definitely want to read the rest of the book. I really like the idea that you leave a piece of your heart with your first love. The sample grabbed my attention from the start. I really want to read the rest of the book.
Bridget is a fabulous character that un-veils secrets at every turn, be it past boyfriends or other gems. This certainly keeps the readers on the edge of their seats and turning pages. Add Charlie into the mix with April and you have a concoction which should not be missed by any Paige Toon Fan.
Descriptions of Cornwall are so beautiful, you can smell the sea air and feel the breeze from the hill tops. I loved every page and to have the extra bit is amazing.... BUT.... and i say this with a heavy heart... i was left feeling flat. The end seemed almost rushed and questions still remained. For so long it was about the book... but beside saying sales took over the advance, we didn't know how she had done. Did Kate like the book? Did Bridget write anymore?
Maybe its just me, but i felt the book was about more than Charlie and April at the beginning but not at the end.
The problem with giving your heart away to someone is that you never get it back. Long after you've fallen out of love with them, they still own a little piece of you....
These lines resonated so deep within me that it almost felt as if author Paige Toon is describing my story. Everything that I believe about love is encapsulated in these two lines. So does the main character Bridget, a travel writer with a blog but she goes one step further. She feels that she has become so jaded with love, that she needs to ask all the men that she has been in love before, for the pieces of her heart back then, and only then, can she commit to her boyfriend Elliot totally.
So armed with this idea, she pitches it to her editor to combine her travel stories with meeting all her old loves and write a book on it. But her editor has another concept in mind, she wants Bridget to continue with her blog and at the same time write a sequel to the novel the secret life of us by the late Nicole Dupre, to become a ghost writer of sorts.
Nicole died of a brain aneurysm a few months ago and has left behind an unfinished manuscript, a grief stricken husband, Charlie and a baby April. So Bridget travels to the beautiful Padstow, Cornwall in the month of August to begin her research into the life of Nicole. Reading through the notes and diaries , Bridget does see the familiarity between characters of Nicole's book and real life, and at the same time gets to know Charlie and April and then story goes further like every romance but with a difference...
What I particularly liked about this story, is the combination of humor and real life. Love need not always be so serious and love need not start as love, it can start as friendship, humour, daily routine and then slowly burst into its own glory. That's what Paige Toon does...
She brings warmth and laughter in every situation. There are so many emotions that I could not help but dive into it, I laughed with Bridget, I danced with her, I cried when she did but I fell in love with both Bridget and Charlie.
Bridget has everything going for her, she is warm, funny, lives life unapologetically with her convictions, her concept of going after her old loves and asking for her heart back has been ridiculed and trolled but she genuinely believes in the closure that such an act would bring. It's this combination of genuineness and innocence that made me root for her. To counter her whacky personality, there is Charlie who is just coming out of his grief for his dead wife and looking after a tiny tot. Their interactions are absolutely heart warming and funny. I could literally 'see' their world, how their liking and comfortability progressed to love and I thank Paige Toon for showing me that beauty. This line strikes a chord in me..
Do you know that you are supposed to hug for at least seven seconds to get the full benefit of it...
Nothing can be more beautiful than two people falling in love slowly, accepting each other, their friendship blossoming into love. Even people who are cynics or jaded will read this book and have a tiny smile on their face and that is the magic of Paige Toon's writing. Each word is fun to read, fun to imagine and fun to long for.
This was my first book by her and OH what a book. It was everything I had hoped for and then some. I really thought it would just be a regular chick lit and it does follow the script to some extent but then it takes a life of its own, each character is wonderful by themselves or when they are together...
This is the beginning of my relationship with the author as I know I will read up all her books and each book will kindle an emotion in my heart and a longing for further such journeys...
I end with the last line of the book, told by Bridget, which took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes;
As for my darling adopted daughter April, she has the last piece of my heart. And I'll never ask for it back. Ever...
The excerpt I read was wonderful. i was drawn into Bridget's story at once and now I want to find out what she's doing with the last piece of her heart.
A novel of the broken who seem to have no hope in mending. It is heartbreakingly poignant and readers will love a vividly woven story.
This chapter had me hooked! I needed to find out what was going to happen next and I've now bought my own copy of the book and i'm currently reading and enjoying it. The writing style flows very easily and the voice within the book is light and easy to read from even though some of the topics mentions are sad and heavy. Bridget is a funny, bubbly and great character to read about.
Paige Toon is an author that I've read several of her books, many I've enjoyed so when i saw this one i knew i needed to read it and it hasn't been disappointing so far.
My love for Paige Toon’s novels in no secret. I’ve followed her career since Lucy in the Sky debuted 10 years ago and loved every one, but The Last Piece of My Heart is one of my favourites in a long while.
I’ve loved Bridget from her side roles in a few of Paige Toon’s other novels, but she quickly became one of my very favourite heroines - she’s the type of person I’d love to be friends with. I felt like I was following her every step of the way on Bridget’s journey and I fell in love with her, Charlie and little April. One of my favourite elements of Paige’s books is always the locations and I thoroughly enjoyed my virtual trips to Cornwall, Ireland, Sydney and Thailand - I wonder where she’ll take me next!
I laughed, cried and didn’t want the book to end. Why do I have to wait another year for her next book?!
Enjoyed this taster! Will be heading to the shops to purchase to finish reading this!
I read several 5 star reviews for this book but I couldn't get into it. I guess it was just not a good fit for me.
The title is so appropriate because it becomes a little piece of your heart.. Paige Toon writes with such emotion and draws up such relatable characters.. I look forward to all titles from her.
I enjoyed this short story, although gutted I didn't see it was a short story as I wanted to read more. I enjoyed how easy it was and I loved the leading lady as soon as I opened the book on my kindle.
Full of promise and I can't wait to go and pick up the full and complete book as I want to keep reading more. Paige Toon has done it again and I can't wait for more!
To be honest, I only received a small portion of this novel to read. However, from what I've read, it sounds like something I would really enjoy. I liked the characters and enjoyed the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster UK for the opportunity to read and review these tantalizing chapters.
So this is the story of Bridget, who has reached an impasse and decided it’s time to figure out what’s the REAL story with her love life. She had always blamed the first love of her life for mucking up potential perfect future relationships, but he sends her head into a spin with the idea that maybe the truth lies in the relationships since. And so she decides to delve further into this idea.
Ms Toon got me early on with some beautiful phrasing and the fact that this book would include bookish information on travelling that was laden with romance. The premise of the story, looking into TWELVE loves of her life, I’ll admit, had me siding with Bridget’s editor and thinking ‘twelve? Really?’, but that was quickly parked with the introduction of the story of Nicole Dupre, who Bridget is to ghostwrite on behalf of. This most definitely saved the book for me and I most definitely will read on in the future, although it might say something that I didn’t go straight to download from Amazon straight away.
