This book was a real page turner from the beginning! I was drawn to it as it was about a honeymoon in The Maldives (I had my honeymoon there less than 6 months ago) and loved the way it evoked memories of the island we went to... however I can happily say my honeymoon was nothing like this and my Husband came home with me in one piece! I didn't see the twist coming at the end and was hooked from the first page to the last!
This book was amazing from beginning to end. Flitting between the present and a few years ago, we learn about the ever-so-slightly complex Jemma and her boyfriend / husband. When her husband goes missing, a few days into their honeymoon, the reader is pulled into a huge whodunit. This book is exciting, enticing and kept me guessing all the way through, with some lovely twists and turns. I thoroughly recommend this book to everyone who can read!
I loved One Step Too Far by this author, it is a favourite of mine and I have recommended to many friends who also enjoyed it, so I was delighted to read an early copy of this long awaited new release and I was not disappointed.
I was pulled into the story from the start. The honeymoon is idyllic at first but then events takes a sinister turn and the true characters start to emerge and the tension builds.
I couldn't wait to pick it up in the evening, and at the same time I didn't want to put it down, which says a lot about the story and its writing. It's an easy read, engaging and gripping, as well as a good mystery and enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages.
I did not guess the final outcome, although I had plenty of theories. Thoroughly enjoyable would definitely recommend.
Set in London and the Maldives. This is a great book that I could not put
down. It's full of twists and turns and really keeps you guessing and an
ending that I wasn't expecting.
I have been a huge Tina Seskis fan ever since I read One Step Too Far, which I have named in my top 20 all time favourite books and has probably the best twist I have read in recent years. I get 99% of twists nowadays but that one gave me one of the best “twistgasms” I have ever had!!! The Serpentine Affair didn’t quite live up to my ridiculously high expectations so I was looking forward to reading The Honeymoon, hoping those dizzy heights were to be reached again. I had been waiting so long to read it that my excitement at getting a review copy reached fever pitch but OMG it was worth the wait! This book is going to blow your mind!
The Honeymoon is a slow burning claustrophobic suspense where the heat and the island setting adds to the tension building right from the first few pages. Told in the “Now” by Jemma who realises on the fifth morning of her luxurious honeymoon in The Maldives that her new husband has gone missing. We are also treated to flashbacks starting seven and a half years earlier which fills in a few of the blanks about their relationship and also treats us to a few surprises quite early on in the action. But fear not, there are plenty more twists and turns to come!
I did find myself becoming mildly obsessed with discovering why a man would go missing on his honeymoon and a whole host of theories ran themselves through my brain, trying to look for the most oblique possibilities as I know how this authors mind works! Or I THOUGHT I did because she has just given us once again a twist that I didn’t see coming in a million years but that also managed to be a bang on trend, socially relevant observation that managed to both shock and delight at the same time. Honestly, I kneel before the brilliance of this author!
There was a widely spread cast of characters to give us plenty of possible suspects and plausible scenarios as to why someone would disappear from such an island paradise. And we are always in two minds as to whether or not it was a planned departure and if so, what set off such a dramatic chain reaction. The exploration of family relationships and the sexual chemistry given off by another honeymoon couple both seem to leave Jemma exploring various avenues in her search for her husband but the island is a small place and the longer he is gone the likelier it looks that he wont be returning.
The themes of obsession and revenge cut through the tension, filling scenes with enough resentment and jealousy to make this a top notch psychological thriller that will have you gasping out loud. I am still thinking about this book now, weeks after finishing it and I can’t wait to see what everyone else will be saying about it on publication day. This has been such a difficult review to construct as I’m terrified of giving away spoilers whilst trying to entice you into one of the best books of 2017. And has it put me off planning a celebratory holiday to the Maldives next year? No! But if my husband ever reads The Honeymoon then I have a feeling he won’t be quite as keen!
I didn't request this book when I first saw in on NetGalley, though the synopsis did interest me, because I didn't enjoy a previous book by Tina Seskis (One step too far, I gave it 2.5 stars personally)
However after hearing so many good reviews from people on an online book group I am part of I decided to request after all. And I am so glad that I did. The Honeymoon was fantastic! So much to keep you interested, and just as you think you know what's happening, BAM, you have to start your thought process all over again.
If you haven't read this book already, what are you waiting for?
It actually took me. A few chapters to get into this story, I found Jemma annoying and snobbish to the point where I almost put the book down, but I persevered and I'm so glad I did.
I never saw the ending coming, even though I was sure I knew what had happened, I was way off and although I didn't warm much to Jemma, I did sympathise with her plight.
How awful she must've felt on that fateful night is something that would haunt you forever.
The writing was good, the author told the various points of view well and the twists and turns were really something!
From the first page I knew I was going to like this book. there was a bit that I definitely wasn't expecting which is what made the book better as you just didn't know what to expect. Highly recommended
Thanks Netgalley. I loved this book and was hooked from the onset. Brilliantly written story
This is definitely a book for when you need the lightest of frothy-light reading (beach, flight, bath) and with one of the most demented endings I've ever read which had me giggling out loud at the utter ridiculousness of it! Part-chick-lit, part romantic thriller, part holiday porn: this sets up all kinds of secrets (what happened to make marriage-obsessed Jemma turn against her soon-to-be-husband the night before their wedding? What secret relations exist between Jamie, his boss, her brother and a fellow holidayer? What's the secret that Jemma has entrusted to Chrissie?) but they all fizzle away to nothing. And we're left with *that ending*!
Utterly silly but fun - one to pack in your suitcase for when your brain is switched off.
What I expected from this book was certainly not the ending! Good story, well written with a couple of twists to surprise in the middle and at the end.
When Jemma's husband disappears on their luxury honeymoon in the Maldives, she is confused. Who can she trust? What on earth has happened to her husband?
From the beginning, Jemma is an unreliable narrator who seems more concerned with what others will think of her rather than finding her husband. Although I didn't like the majority of the characters, the twists and turns of the novel kept me reading. The story is told through alternating chapters between present day and the past as it unveils events that have led to the disappearance.
My review as posted on Goodreads:
This is the first book by Tina Seskis which I have read. It will not be the last.
I liked the clever use of the duel-timeframe, which slowly brought together the honeymoon in the Maldives and the seven years leading up to the marriage of Mr and Mrs Armstrong.
At times I found the back-story slightly laboured. However, it was worth waiting for the twist in the tale; which turned this book from a romantic crime thriller into a psychological thriller.
I give my thanks to Netgalley and Penguin (Michael Joseph) for a copy in exchange for this review.
I'm a huge fan of Tina's books having loved One Step too Far and A Serpentine Affair years ago so was thrilled to read her latest book (which I read in one sitting!)
The story is told in the present day, in the recent past and some months before. It is edgy and fast paced and I was on the edge of my seat throughout. Jemma and Jamie have just got married and are on a dream honeymoon on a tiny island in the Maldives but all is not well. Jamie goes missing and the finger points in Jemma's direction. A roller coaster of a read with an ending I didn't see coming. Loved it.
A honeymoon set on a stunning tropical beach with golden sands should really be a slushy, happy tale. However, this one is dark and eery under that sun. I felt the emotions with Jemma of being trapped in paradise scorned by the other guests - all happy newlyweds. Jemma's husband has disappeared and no-one is trustworthy. A great, few twists and a didn't see that coming ending!
Wow! Another brilliant book from Tina Seskis, I love the way she writes and I never see the twists coming!
This is the first book I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were lots of twists and turns along the way that I certainly didn't see coming and didn't know who to trust or who to believe. Would definitely recommend this book.
So many books promise a shocking twist that you won't see coming but when you get to the end you are left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed.Well this totally gripping, twisty thriller has a twist that was so unexpected my jaw literally almost hit the floor.
Jemma has been planning the perfect honeymoon for as long as she can remember but now her dream honeymoon has turned into a nightmare.
The man that she married a week ago has disappeared from the five star resort in the Maldives without a trace.
After everything that they have been through, how can this be happening? Can Jemma trust anyone on the island? And above all where has her husband gone?.
This twist packed, thrilling story is split into four parts and has chapters that are set before, during and after the honeymoon.Although it is mainly told by Jemma there is also some chapters that are voiced by other characters but it never got confusing and the story was easy too follow.Jemma was a complex, frustrating and not very likeable character who I struggled to feel any sympathy for as the story unfolded.I liked Jemma`s best friend Sasha but the other main characters were untrustworthy and unlikable for various reasons,I suspected quite a number of them of being involved in or knowing something about Jemma`s husband`s disappearance and each time I was totally wrong.
It's a twist packed story that had me hooked from the first page and whipping through the pages as fast as I could because I wanted to know what was going on and how this brilliant page turning was going to end
After reading One Step Too Far and The Serpentine years ago, I have been eagerly awaiting a new offering from Tina Seskis.
The Honeymoon tells the story of Jemma and her new husband, and their turbulent and simmering relationship juxtaposed against the heaven like setting of the Maldives is very powerful. The first twist that comes very early in the book I would not have seen coming, although unfortunately I did see a spoiler before reading that alerted me to it!
Somehow I did manage to guess the ending, although it was only very close to the end that I did so! You immediately start to run back through the book in your mind and spot the clues, which really does send a chill down the spine! Overall, another fantastic read, and all though for me nothing could match up to One Step Too Far, I will definitely be recommending this to my friends!
I was kindly sent a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Brilliantly written story.of a woman who marries her ex's brother who then disappears. You gain an insight as to the kind of woman she maybe that will make you wonder if she had a hand in it.
It's set mainly in Mauritius and the ending is totally unexpected.
I loved this book
