First time I've read a book by this author. It won't be the last. Thoroughly enjoyed the how the heartache of losing a loving grandmother and how it affects both the lives of Ava and her brother Rory. Also the link between them and the lovely Flora. Also how Ava comes to terms with what happened with hermother and how it affected her relationships.
I love Jenny Oliver so I was delighted to see this title on Netgalley! As always, she writes with such a warm voice and crafts characters that you can genuinely care about.
Even though Ava and Rory were quite flawed characters, I found myself genuinely invested in their development, and was pleased to see that while they did both get their happy ending, it didn't mean compromising the principles or priorities that they were shown to have.
The book was so well set too- in terms of the Spanish seaside village with its gorgeous beaches and the food descriptions that actually forced me to make tapas while I read the book, but also of the secondary characters that populated the world. Every character had their role to play and seemed well fleshed-out, but I found Max especially compelling. It's difficult for an adult woman to write a convincing teenage boy, but Jenny Oliver really succeeded here.
All in all, I really loved this book. Even ignoring the plot, though it too was pleasingly balanced between the main storyline and the individual personal motivations, I think Jenny Oliver has a great talent for writing compelling and real characters to inhabit her books.
A lovely summer read. Sun, sea and romance.
After Ava Brown’s grandmother dies at her home in Spain, Ava and her brother Rory find themselves on a holiday of discovery, not just the beautiful village of childhood memories but of themselves, their mother and new beginnings.
A beautiful story, well written, atmospheric, charming and a joy in which to immerse yourself away from the real world.
I would not usually wax lyrical about a ‘Chick Lit’ type of story but it really was good. The characters were all lovable and multi -dimensional, brought to life along with the descriptions of hot sunny day, aroma of Tapas and sun cream, sounds of happy times on holiday. I felt I was there and living life with Ava and her friends.
I am going to look out for more of Jenny’s books as it was a great and enjoyable change from my usual book genres.

Just to say quickly that this is my first Jenny Oliver novel and it certainly won't be my last! The way in which the book is written is brilliant and so descriptive, in some parts I felt like I was really there!
This is a happy and feel good book and I enjoyed every minute of it. I would definitely recommend that it is a must-read for the Summer. It'll definitely make you want to go and visit Spain and maybe even not want to come back! This book is beautifully written and explores not only love relationships but family relationships.
The book follows Ava and her brother Rory and his son Max as they both fall on hard times and, after their grandmother Val passes away, decide to pack up and spend the summer in their grandmothers Summerhouse in Spain. The characters are delightful and I found it really enjoyable to read. As the book went on the more you got attached to each separate character and fell in love with their charms and humour.
Not wanting to go into too much detail in regards to the storyline itself, this book has plenty of twists and turns which will leave you wanting to read more! (Take it from me - I couldn't put the book down it was so fascinating!)
Overall, I think this book is full of warmth and will leave you feeling all fuzzy inside when you finish reading. It's a delightful and lighthearted novel and exactly what I look for when choosing what to read next.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for allowing me to read The Summerhouse by the Sea in return of an honest review.
This is a really lovely holiday read. I really enjoyed this.
The main character's are a brother and sister, and from the very start they go through a lot and there is so much going on for them. Its really nice to see them bond throughout the book.
The summer house sounds like a fabulous wee place and it definitely makes you want to go on holiday there.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for allowing me to read and review Summerhouse by the Sea. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
I’ve just finished reading this delightful, feel-good book. I think that it is a must read for the summer holidays, but even more so, this beautifully written story explores family relationships, how they affect us in ways not always apparent and how we can rise above them to become our own person.
This is an intelligent, well written, touching tale of love, loss and realising what truly matters in life – contentment and acceptance.
This story revolves around siblings, Rory and Ava Fisher, whose mother, Isabel, was a famous singer. She deserted them to all intents and purposes when they were young. Their father is a somewhat distant figure, but luckily they holidayed frequently with their grandmother, Val, and she provided some much needed stability and love to their lives.
When their grandmother passes away, Rory wants to sell her home, the Summerhouse in Spain, but Ava decides to stay on for a while after the funeral, taking a leave of absence from work and renting out her flat in London. Rory, a filmmaker, suffers a professional mishap and needs to escape his failing career so he joins Ava, along with his son, Max. His wife, Claire, is left behind in London as she has work commitments.
The wonderful supporting characters, who were friends of Val such as Flora, Gabriella, Rosa, etc., enrich this charming and funny story, and play an important role in influencing the life decisions ultimately made by Rory and Ava. Let's not forget about Tom either, Ava's one time celebrity crush.
Without giving too much away as this book is only available for pre-order at the moment, both Rory and Ava have to acknowledge how much their disaffected parents have influenced their personal relationships. To move on from this realisation, they have to accept themselves and decide what they want out of life.
An interesting underlying thread running throughout this story is the impact that technology has had on their lives and that having a detox from their phones, etc., enabled them to discover what was truly meaningful.
This book is full of humour, warmth, love and a touch of romance. It will leave you feeling uplifted and is guaranteed to make you smile.
It is full of happy endings! I loved reading it and I'm sure that you will too.
This charming book deserves a celebrated 5 stars.
I have read Jenny olivers book before and have always enjoyed. This one is no different! Really liked this, nice easy read and transported you to the cafe and beach, writing style was brilliant
I enjoyed this book even though it wasn't what I expected. It was more about families and complex relationships rather than a light hearted chic lit. Tom's character was a bit unexplored, I think it was more about Ava's brother but it was all light hearted enough and there was the compulsory happy ending. I would have liked a bit more detail on the romance but it was a good easy read for a rainy day, thank you
Beautiful written felt like I was really there. A great easy read for this summer
