I thought this was an odd book that couldn't seem to make up its mind whether to be a love story, a supernatural thriller or a post-apocalyptic tale.
Callie disappeared over a year ago and appears to be held in a facility which experiments on children. Callie becomes aware just as her body is incinerated and her ghostly form follows us for the rest of the tale.
Meanwhile Shay goes to a shop and sees a poster of a Missing girl that she suddenly recalls seeing from a year ago.- Don't worry she has special abilities that allow her to recall every detail with perfect clarity.
Shay called Kai, Callie's brother, and they join together to find Callie which coincidentally happens just as the contagion is released. People start dying and Kai's mother is called on to help with a cure.
The two leads have an almost magical "love at first sight" connection. The contagion is potentially supernatural in origin and the 'special abilities' of the lead are very convenient. Of course Shay can see Callie when she shows up- because, why not.
In parts it was very slow going and you could see the twists coming a mile off (Gee, I wonder who their father is.) Whereas other parts were very fresh and different.
Overall I was confused as to the general direction and probably won't read the sequels.

Felt like something of a departure for Terry, but the split narrative worked well and once I'd got the voices fixed in my mind I found them interesting. A compelling story, very relevant, but utterly terrifying. I need to know more!

Fast and pacy, with great characters and lots of twists and turns. More than your average virus story.

This tale is creepy. And it's even creepier that I got used to it really quickly. I know I'm being vague but I don't want to ruin the twists for anyone. Suffice to say, something quite odd happens very early on and then you find that you're half way through the book and you no longer find the oddness odd. That's the kind of clever pen Teri Terry wields.

I did figure out one of the more significant twists before the end but this wasn't disappointing because it made me feel smart (!) and because Terry has left so many loose threads that the story could go in any direction as the trilogy progresses.

I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, plot, locational details and premise. It will be frustrating to wait for the rest of the trilogy!

Teri Terry has become one of my favourite authors through the Slated trilogy. So when I saw Contagion up for request on NetGalley how could I resist.

Teri Terry certainly doesn’t disappoint. Contagion is a strong opening to an exciting new series.

I thought I knew where the book was going when I read the synopsis. However, Contagion was an unpredictable story that made me keep turning the pages.

The story follows Shay as she tries to help Kai find his younger sister who went missing a year before. But, their priorities soon change as a deadly flu starts to sweep through Scotland.

I’m a bit of a sucker for a good old deadly plague and Contagion delivers a great plague setting. However the book doesn’t become over whelmed by this story line but focuses more on the characters and origins of the flu.

The story is split between two character perspectives. The short chapters work really well, often showing one scene through two pairs of eyes. Shay and Callie, who are the those two pairs of eyes, are the main characters. I really liked the character of Shay. She wasn’t overly brave and strong, but these imperfections are what made her character feel more real.

My one grumble is the relationship between Kai and Shay. It isn’t even a spoiler to say that they are together because it happens from page 1. It was far too quick. It felt off and annoyed me through the first third of the book. About half way through would have been a better point for them to actually become a couple.

Overall, Contagion is a brilliant start to a new trilogy that I cant wait to keep reading. Especially after the nice cliffhanger ending, thanks Teri for that one.

4/5 Stars
