A great crime mystery thriller that drains you in and is full of twists and turns and the story does not let up at all, great read.
With a friend's daughter is listed as a runaway and a new body of a teen girl washed up on the beach, the detectives in one way are hoping it's not the same person - it however will be but this isn't the end of their story as more missing girls start to appear and it seems that they are all connected to a secret underground rave. When another colleague of theirs, the daughter tells her father about their friend and how she is now missing and then a girl wakes up half-dead in the hospital with a friend missing. It seems that the town has a killer on their hands and taking young females. We later learn that all these females that have been taken also have something in common - all of them were born on a Wednesday. As the story unfolds, we learn that the missing girls are connected to a case on the Moors that happened decades prior. I have to admit, the twists of the story when they discover what's underground in the tunnels surprised me and I was like WTF have they stumbled upon and how on earth did nobody find it earlier? If you are on the lookout for a new UK mystery author, then check out Joy Ellis and her book "Their Lost Daughters" in the series featuring DI Jackman and DS Evans.
A very gripping book which i really enjoyed. Just how a book should be, with plenty of twists and turns. I cannot recall if i have read any other books by Joy Ellis, but i shall be wanting to read more by this author.
My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review.
I didn't realize that this was book 2 in a series. I thought it was a standalone novel.
Another great read from Joy Ellis. She writes gritty crime novels and this title was a real page turner. A shocking find by the team makes their task very difficult in trying to find the killer. One of my favourite titles by this author to date.
No secret, I'm a huge Joy Ellis fan, and after reading this book, I can now officially claim, I have read all of her books. Joy has done absolutely amazing, the amount of books she has published in such a short time is phenomenal.
I absolutely love THE NIKKI GALENA SERIES, and now this book 2 in THE JACKMAN & EVANS SERIES, well it's looking like I'm going to be adding another must read series to my list.
This certainly proved to be a complex case for DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans of the Fenland police. Missing girls, Illegal drinking clubs and then the team come across a sinister former hospital called Windrush it seems to house many dark secrets. This story is expertly told, the characters are real and likeable. well most of them are.
It's full of twists and turns that will certainly keep you on your toes, and keep you guessing the whole way through.
Once I started this I found it difficult to put it down.
I especially like DS Marie Evans who lost her husband in a motorbike accident and has personal connections to the case. She's a true likeable character, she has her flaws, but I just seemed to bond with the character. I can see her doing so much more in future books.
This book surprised me. I was utterly shocked how invested I was in this book. Very well written and relatable characters
I have bought this book in a kindle format and will read it in due course.
On a cold and wet morning the body of a young woman is found on a deserted beach. DI Rowan Jackman, DS Marie Evans and their team already have a heavy workload when their supervisor assigns the case to them.
Their investigations uncover something more sinister than expected after another girl disappears and her friend found disoriented and injured. A series of well organized rave parties appear to the common thread linked to the girls.
As events gather momentum Jackman and his team find themselves in a race to locate another girl before it is too late. Their search leads them to a run down asylum undergoing renovations. Police will make a heart wrenching discovery and unearth a family secret kept hidden for years. Will they find a killer with a heart or one with more sinister motives?
A positive outcome for this investigation leads to unforeseen closure on a cold case and peace for a long suffering parent.
This is the second book in the DI Jackman and DS Evans series and guaranteed to have more than one surprise up its sleeve. If you like police procedurals, thrillers and the like then you will enjoy this book.
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher. I loved this book and wished I had read the first one. I shall certainly be looking out for more books from this author
Loved, loved, loved this book. Love this Author. Can't wait to read her next novel!
Very good detective book and murder story. The characters especially the detectives are very good and I am intrigued to read other books with these characters. Together the detectives piece together the truth.
Enjoyed this book. Good storyline that kept me engrossed through out. Will be looking for more in this series
This is the first time I have read any of Joy's books and after reading this I went straight to Amazon and ordered more. It' is a book that you keep thinking I will just read one more chapter before I stop. Not a chance. It keeps you guessing right to the end and never stops throwing up more surprises and wow what a twist. Loved it and would recommend 100%. Thank you Joy for a brilliant book.
Their Lost Daughters by Joy Ellis is the second book in the Jackman Evans series and better than the first one.
Two girls go to a party but only one girl Toni is found alive ,wandering lost, drugged and confused. She talks about the second girl Emily who went along with her but got abducted by unknown men. While investigating this case Jackman and are also asked to re-investigate a ten year old case of a missing child Kenya Black, which was never solved. Will Jackman and his team be able to find what happened to Emily and also provide justice to the Kenya Black’s case?
This is was a thrilling police procedural read with some great characters. The plot line flowed seamlessly and the end came together beautifully. I highly recommend Their Lost Daughters by Joy Ellis for all mystery lovers.
Many thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for this sample copy in exchange for my honest and fair review.

A well written book that is gruesome in places. There is plenty of action and I read the book in one sitting. The murders are disturbing but this book is still a really good read. I would definitely read more Joy Ellis books.
It is easy to become addicted to Joy Ellis’s novels. Her police procedurals would make excellent movies. The cases are complex, compelling and always unique. Her investigators are distinct individuals you come to care about. Their Lost Daughters features DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans. If you enjoy reading the Nikki Galena novels, you will definitely enjoy these as well.
Their Lost Daughters tackles a very difficult subject - the grooming of teens. Teens are being lured to parties where they are given alcohol and drugs and encouraged to “enjoy” themselves. The parties are far from innocent, and some of the attendees aren't seen afterwards. Two connected cases bring the ring to DI Jackman's attention - the disappearance of the daughter of a prominent local businessman and the discovery of a young woman’s body washed upon an isolated beach. The teen is found not long after wandering barefoot, drugged out of her mind. She and another girl were taken from one of the parties and she fears what may have happened to the other girl. Jackman and Evans also have a high profile cold case - the disappearance of a young girl a decade earlier.
Ellis does an amazing job weaving the varying plot lines together into a coherent whole. I don't want to give too much away. What I can say is that Their Lost Daughters is one of Joy Ellis’s best novels yet.
If you like complex British police procedurals with compelling characters, you will definitely enjoy Their Lost Daughters. Mature themes make this novel inappropriate for younger readers.
5 / 5
I received a copy of Their Lost Daughters from the publisher and Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

Hmm....where to start. About 10 minutes into this book I was hooked on the story line, because I wanted to know what happened to these lost girls. Good plot and story line here, but I did find a few things kind of irritating. I wasn't a fan of how each character was arbitrarily described upon introduction. It felt slightly amateurish to me. Also, since this is set in Scotland, some of the dialogue was a little bit hard to follow.
I enjoyed this book enormously, so thank you to Joy Ellis, the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read it.
The story was a very well thought out investigation and is easy to conceive that this would happen in today's modern society.
I liked the main characters and particularly appreciated that they didn't fall into bed etc as happens in some of today's crime/thrillers and that it kept true to the story.
The setting sounded eerily precise and I found myself imagining what it would be like to walk there.
Unlike lots of other crime mysteries I didn't guess the outcome, but, I was left thinking that the story was missing a twist at the end as I was promised.
That said. I would definitely recommend the book to others.
I was Lucky to be given a copy to read from Netgallery in return to give an honest review. I’ve never read any of Joy Ellis’s Books and I found this book to be excellent. The characters of this book were believable and I found the story flowed all the way through. The story line had me gripped from the first chapter to the last and I found I couldn’t put it down. Especially as it kept you guessing to the end.
I highly recommend – Their lost Daughters
Joy Ellis will be in my favourite author list for books to read in the future.
