This was the first book I have read by Joy Ellis and it certainly won't be my last. This was her second book featuring DI Jackman and DS Evans who I found to be likeable and believable characters. The storyline gripped me from the beginning of the book and only got better with an unexpected twist at the end. This is a book that once you start you will find it difficult to out down. A well deserved 5 stars! Thanks to Net Galley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
I really struggled to get i to this one, it sounded a great read and had an intriguing front cover but sadly wasn't for me.
Although I have read quite a few books by this author its the first that I have read in the Jackman and Evans series. It works quite well as a stand alone and I really enjoyed it. Jackman has is work cut out with the murder of a young girl on his patch so when he is called upon to investigate the disappearance of a young girl almost ten years ago and also help a neighbouring force locate another missing girl he is not a happy man. The story is gripping with many different aspects. I will definitely read the others in the series.
I rarely give 5 stars but I can only think of good things to say about this book. I have never read Joy Ellis's books before, but I will certainly be reading her other novels (especially in this series) as she was able to present a story so full of twists and turns and dead ends and amazing discoveries that I lost sleep and kept telling myself, "Just ONE more chapter." I think I'm in love with Rowan Jackman and Marie Evans is my soul sister. I appreciated that the characters love their jobs and, although they have been through trying times, they aren't the cliche bunch of divorced and grumpy alcoholic detectives. They remind me of P.J. Tracy's Monkeewrench crew. I recommend this one for anyone who loves the mystery/thriller genre!
A great easy read. I just kept turning the pages. Never a dull moment
Set around the Lincolnshire fens DI Jackson and DS Evans are heading an investigation into the missing daughter of one of their own. When the body of Shauna Kelly washes up on the beach it is the outcome they dreaded. When another girl turns up wandering in the fens with signs of being drugged and going on about her friend Emily being taken they begin to think these cases are linked. To add to their already increasing workload they are also assigned a cold case of a missing girl by a neighbouring police force. Are these cases linked despite being 10 years apart??
When I started this book I thought it would be a case about missing girls but the further into the book that I got, the more I saw that there was something else going on. Joy Ellis weaves a story that takes you to underground drinking parties frequented by underage revellers and a good hunting ground for the person abducting the victims. You are also drawn in to old tales of the area that have a bearing on the case and its eventual outcome.
I have to say I loved this book although due to the subject matter I do feel slightly odd using the word loved. It was not fast paced but considering the subject it was dealing with then slow and steady seemed to suit it. You get a real sense that DI Rowan Jackson and DS Marie Evans have a mutual respect for one another and although there is a difference in rank DI Jackson fully values all of his team and the strengths that they bring to it. Despite not having much time for his superiors they are also more in the background and only make an appearance in the story when absolutely necessary and don’t actually hinder the investigations. It was also nice to see normal situations appear between the team despite the gruesome nature of the case.
There is so much more I could say about this book but if I did I would worry that I would spoil it for other readers by giving things away.
Their Lost Daughters by Joy Ellis is the second book in the DI Jackson & DS Evans series. Although I have not read the first book The Murderers Son it did not stop me from thoroughly enjoying this one. The main characters clearly have back stories that are probably explained in book one but you don’t actually need to know about them to appreciate their dynamic.
This is the first book by Joy Ellis I have read but it won’t be the last.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for a review copy of Their Lost Daughters, the second police procedural to feature DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans in Saltern-le-Fen, Lincolnshire.
The team have their hands full. Just as they are starting to investigate the suspicious death of missing teenager Shauna Kelly they are instructed to re-open the case of Kenya Black, a child who went missing years ago, and make it their number one priority as her mother is about to launch a press initiative. On top of that the deeply unpleasant Chief Superintendent Cade of the neighbouring division insists that they join the hunt for Toni Clarkson, another missing teenager.
I thoroughly enjoyed Their Lost Daughters. It is a thrilling, absorbing read. The plotline may not be the most realistic but it flows well in a logical way with one discovery leading to another. It is intricately plotted with lots going on but it is not difficult to follow, just busy in a good way. I was glued to the pages and read it in one sitting.
The characterisation is great. Ms Ellis creates likeable, smart people. Their team ethos and camaraderie bring a warmth to the novel the subject matter doesn't allow and it is refreshing to read about normal, non hung-up detectives doing a good job.
Ms Ellis is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. Their Lost Daughters is an excellent addition to her library as it is very readable with an absorbing plot and pleasant protagonists.
This second outing in the DI Jackson and DS Evansof series is my favorite Joy Ellis book so far.
A dead girl is found, as well as a lost, confused girl who vaguely remembers going to a drinks party with a girlfriend and being accosted by shadowy men who abducted the girls. Her girlfriend has disappeared, while she was dumped and has barely any memories of the ordeal.
Jackson and his team are overwhelmed, as they are also given a cold case: the disappearance of a toddler years ago.
Evil men who prey on teenage girls, a seriously scary giant of a man who is renovating an old Victorian mansion for a mysterious wealthy businessman, eerie singing on the fens and a pervading sense of discomfort all add up to an exciting, tense read. The end packs a surprising punch and left me panting for the next in the series. Excellent read!
Thank you Netgalley and Joffe Books for the eARC.
Wow this was a fantastic read. I love the Fens Series so I was excited to read this. It did not disappoint, I was so engrossed in this story I couldn't put it down. I hope that this is the start of a new series because I really liked the characters and would like to see more of them. I give this a 6 stars!
My review as posted on Goodreads:
In my review of 'The Murderer's Son' I said:
"This story features DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans. Will this become part of a series or will it remain a one off? I for one, hope that there will be other books featuring this team. I think this is an excellent police procedural crime thriller. I warmed to the team of detectives. The characterisation is excellent."
In this the second book in the series, I have not changed my mind. Joy Ellis has created a novel with a disturbing story line, which is sadly fairly topical.
I liked the pace of the book. It is certainly one which kept me guessing. There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot, before the truth emerges.
My thanks go to Netgalley and Joffe Books for a copy in exchange for this review.
Jackman and Evans are back for another adventure. They receive an early morning call to investigate the death of a young girl found on an isolated beach. Then there is another young girl found wandering through the fields, having been drugged. She wants to know where they took Emily. But who is Emily?
And is there a connection to a missing girl from years ago? Her mother insists she is still alive, yet no one has ever been able to find her or find what happened to her.
Four girls ... four missing or dead ... and the families want answers.
Is there a connection to the illegal rave parties that law enforcement would dearly love to shut down?
Lots of twists and turns .... a crooked cop who has forgotten what side of the law he is on .... an abandoned former hospital that holds dark, dark secrets. And the children's ward .. the stuff nightmares are made of. A terrifying twist at the end.
This is not the first I've read by this author .. and it certainly won't be the last. This is a well-written crime thriller with unforgettable characters.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Negalley for the proof addition of this book. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
If you can't tell from the cover illustration, this book is not for the faint of heart. It's the story of horrible, unspeakable crimes and the pain that led to them.
However, the story is an amazing thriller which will keep readers on the edge of their seats. There's a lot of moving parts, but it all seems to come together in the end in the story of people that are dealing with their painful legacies.
The story begins when the body of a young girl washes up on a beach, badly beaten. She was a bit of a "wild child" who liked to party. Soon other girls begin turning up drugged or missing and Police Detectives Rowan Jackman and Marie Evans must figure out what's going on. Meanwhile, they're also asked to reopen the case of a young missing girl from seven years ago - a sort of JonBenet of rural England.
It seems so weird to say that I liked this book, because as I said earlier, the answers to the mystery are quite gruesome. It's not pleasant. But as a fictional story, it is enjoyable in that there is so much suspense and intrigue. I was so into this book, waiting to see how everything came together.
It's like a season of American Horror Story. How could we all like that stuff?! I don't know, but we do!
There were a lot of moving parts, which did make some of it confusing, but most issues were resolved the end. I do wish that some other things had been clearer (like the past events that led to the current ones). I don't even know how to describe things from 50 percent of the story onward without spoiling things.
But trust me, this book is worth it. It is a thrilling ride from start to finish.
Great detective novel. It is well written with many twists and turns in the plot. I was immediately pulled into the drama.
5 stars
DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans are called out to the beach where the body of a young girl was found. Whether she is the missing girl, Shauna Kelly is a matter for the forensic examiner.
When called back to the station, their boss calls them in and tells them that another case of a missing young girl, Kenya Black is reopened. It has been many years since the girl went missing, but was never found.
Then another young girl goes missing in another district. Jackman and Evans are asked to take a look, so they reluctantly go off to check it out.
The case gets bigger and bigger as Jackman and Evans chase the clues and interview witnesses and families. One girl survives, one dies and the other one…Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out.
This is an extremely well written and plotted novel. I really like the way DI Jackman’s team gets along. The fact that there was no sexual tension between Jackman and Evans came as a refreshing welcome to me. I am a little tired of DIs and their Sergeants hopping in bed together.
Joy Ellis is a very gifted writer and I very much look forward to the next book in this series.
I want to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this most remarkable book to read.
This is a great follow up to The Murderer's Son. two girls go to a party but only one returns. Well written, a really intriguing plot and great characters in Jackman and Evans. A must read for Joy Ellis fans. Many thanks again to Joffe Books and Net Galley for my copy.I reviewed on Goodreads and Amazon.
As a parent I have to admit this was a hard one to read because I kept projecting my own daughter’s face onto these faceless bodies being found and imagining how I’d feel in their parents’ position.
This was a highly intense novel that kept the intrigue going from the first chapter which continued at a steady pace to the end. Ellis writes well with realistic characters and storylines.
There’s decent character development except for the fact you don’t get a real glimpse into their motivations only their actions. You always know who is doing what, when and where but there’s no real depth into the why. Except for the lack of motivation you do get a sense of who these characters are to the point that you could meet them on the street and feel like you know them.
It’s a good series and this particular book in the series has an interesting plot that should keep your attention from the first chapter just because so many questions get brought up, twists are thrown in, all to grab your curiosity to find out who is behind these serial murders and why. She did a good job on the police procedures and law enforcement characters turning them into something more than one dimensional props to spin a mystery around.
She slowly builds the suspension but keeps it going to the end before throwing one last shocker at you.
Ellis shows how she earned her well-deserved reputation for excellent thrilling novels with yet another.
Wonderful unique story, plot was was enjoyable! Characters were fleshed out and execution was flawless.
Ok,firstly I will start with a admission....I was wrong when I decided not to request the first book in this series The Murderers Son.I was going through a phase where I was getting fed up with books about troubled detectives or detectives that spend most of the book butting heads with arrogant colleagues/superior officers so I decided not to bother. After reading this gripping, twisty thriller I honesty regret that decision.
A teenage girl is found wandering the muddy fens, she has been drugged and is delirious. She says that she witnessed her friend Emily being dragged away from the party that they both attended that night. But no one knows who Emily is or even if she is still alive.
Meanwhile the drowned body of another girl is found on a isolated beach.
And how does this all relate to the shocking disappearance of a little girl nearly a decade has,a crime which was never solved.
DI Rowan Jackman and DS Maria Evens are stretched to the limit as they try to solve these terrible crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice.
I really enjoyed this Intreguing mystery,it was packed with twists one of which I certainly didn't see coming.I loved DI Jackman and his team, they worked well together,I loved the banter that the characters shared and the fact that there was no interdepartmental back stabbing.Jackman was a caring boss who listened to his colleagues opinions and was prepared to bring in outside help when it was needed to help solve the case. The cast of characters where realistic and believable, the plot was intreguing and engaging and some of the settings were really quite creepy.
I thought it was a very good book,I will definitely be reading the first one and look forward to reading more DI Jackman investigations in the future.
Although I prefer the Galena series as this book is written by the same author the general tone, plotline and characters are similar.
A harrowing case well written and sensitively portrayed with an unexpected happy ending
Their Lost Daughters by Joy Ellis.
TWO GIRLS GO TO A PARTY, ONLY ONE RETURNS ALIVE
Toni, the surviving teenager, is found delirious, wandering the muddy fields. She has been drugged and it’s uncertain whether she’ll survive. She says she saw her friend Emily being dragged away from the party. But no one knows who Emily is or even if she’s still alive. . .
Meanwhile the drowned body of another girl has been found on an isolated beach.
And how does this all relate to the shocking disappearance of a little girl nearly a decade ago, a crime which was never solved? The girl’s mother is putting immense pressure on the police to re-open the high-profile case.
Absolutely fantastic read with brilliant characters. I loved the story. I loved how Jackman and max got their man in the end. Didn't expect that. Good surprise there. Hope there's more to come from Jackman and his team. 5*. Highly recommended. Thanks netgalley.
