In “Don’t Wake Up” we meet Dr. Alex Taylor who finds herself strapped to an operating table - she is asked one question: What does no mean? What happens next is a roller coaster ride with unpredictable twists as we see Dr. Taylor’s life spiral out of control. The question is – did all of this really happen was it all in her head.
A very enjoyable thriller with well-developed characters. I received this book through NetGalley and this is my honest review.
Grabbed me from the first page and did not let me go until the last, read it in a day which is not like me at all. If you do get your hands on this book prepare to put a hold on your life for a few days. Excellent.
Loved it. Different to other books ive read recently. And it was a great change. Loved the storyline and it kept me intrigued throughout. Funny how you start to imagine whos doing this and i got it so wrong in the end. Very different to books ive read recently and that was refreshing. Felt so sorry for the main character Alex,. Having everyone around her disbelieve her. Very powerful story.
Couldn't put this edge of your seat thriller down! Mystery and thrill in every page! A sure winner for anyone who loves a good mystery!
Holy Dramatic Thriller!
Dr. Alex Taylor wakes up strapped to an operating table, with no recollection of how she got there. Just when she thinks that she won't make it out of there alive, she re-awakens and is unharmed. Her friends and colleagues have a hard time believing that she was abducted. She begins a downward spiral of drinking, which only makes her claims seem more outlandish. Piece by piece, her life starts to fall apart as she tries to prove that she isn't going crazy.
Good gawd. As the story unravels, it gets more and more insane. There is no way that you'll guess who did it because those missing pieces are filled in just as Alex figures it out. The pace starts very fast, then slows down as Alex tries to figure out what the heck happened to her. It picks back up in the last third as her assailant starts popping back up again. Some parts are just completely crazy and unbelievable, but that's what makes it fiction.
ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley
Thanks to Net Galley & Twenty 7 of an ARC of this book in exchange for a review. Wow - this is a page turner - once you start to read you will be gripped by this story.
The voice is male that stands over her but not a voice she recognises, Alex is terrified. Her story of being on an operating table is far fetched and her colleagues do no believe her, neither does her boyfriend.
A series of events start, the wrong medication almost administered to an elderly patient , a young nurse disappears and turns up bleeding to death, a prostitute is found in Alex,s parking bay, having been run over, Alex tries to safe her but another death. Her best friend is murdered, Alex is the only suspect.
This is a fast paced thriller and keeps the reader turning the pages right to the end.
Don’t Wake Up is a dark intense debut novel by Liz Lawler!
The hiss of oxygen, familiar beeps, orange cannulas and clatter of steel instruments …..Alex wakes up from an unnatural sleep to find herself on the operating room table covered in green drapes. A man appears leaning over her with bright lights blaring behind him. This man is no doctor. A proposition is made. Then Alex wakes up to find herself in her cubicle at work. She was found in the parking lot and unharmed and fully clothed. After is implausible event, Dr. Alex Taylor’s life will no longer be the same agin......
This book had me from the opening gate. Liz got all the details of the opening scene right. This sets the stage and promise for a great ride. Unpredictable and disturbing at times, I found myself unable to put this book down. Well developed characters and relationship intertwined in mind-bending plot kept me engaged the entire book.
I highly recommend this suspenseful thriller! I cannot wait to see what Liz Lawler writes next!
Many thanks to the author, Bonnier Zaffre - Twenty7 and Netgalley for the ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
This is such an immersive read. I couldn't put it down! Excellent work. I can't wait to see what else this author creates
I really liked this book! The opening scene had me cringing. The book centres around Dr Alex Taylor, a young feisty skilled A&E doctor, who, after a trauma of her own, finds that she isn't believed by the police, her friends, boyfriend and colleagues. What you'll read is a dark, psychological thriller that will have you rooting for Alex. Will she eventually be believed? Who is the killer? All will be revealed. I would definitely read more by this author and hope that she thinks about starting off a series with Greg, the DCI investigating the killings. The book was easy to read and unputdownable. All the characters are believable and I found myself cheering inside when one particularly detestable character got her comeuppance (Laura Best hated you)! I'm looking forward to reading more. I gave 4 out of 5 starts as I thought a couple of characters could have been expanded on more but maybe this can be done in subsequent books?
“Don’t Wake Up” by Liz Lawler is a medical-based thriller. The preview summary of the book grabbed me at once. A doctor wakes up and finds she is a patient in her own hospital ….. or is she? “Gut-wrenching fear ripped, and her breathing turned ragged as the fought the panic. How seriously was she injured? Was she dying? Was that why no one was around her?” What follows is a frantic search for her assailant despite no one, not friends, colleagues, her fiancé, or police believing that she was really attacked.
As she struggles to put everything back together, she wonders how her life came to this. Her normal life has been stolen and replaced with something that can never resemble normality again. She becomes the prime suspect in a number of hospital errors and unusual deaths as the body count begins to rise and everything crumbles around her.
The main character, Alex Taylor, is well developed, but the supporting characters are deliberately ambiguous. Plot elements are entangled as the past rears its cruel head and interpersonal relationships muddy the water. People are not who they seem to be, but perhaps that is who they were all along. Alex’s supporters and accusers change sides a minute by minute. Things come together in an unexpected and twisted scenario that will surprise and shock.
NetGalley gave me a copy of this book in exchange for my sincere and unbiased review. I loved the book, but this is not a book about ordinary people dealing with ordinary life; this is WAY different. It is an intense psychological thriller, and if you like strange characters, unstable associations, and abnormal revenge, you will love this book.
A fabulous thriller that was addictive from start to finish. Brilliant characters and a healthy amount of twists throughout. The chapters are nice and bite sized which always entices you to read just one more!
This book had promise, but didn't live up to that promise. To add to the suspense, Lawler should have beefed up the unreliable narrator. In the end there were just too many unbelievable aspects to make it a great read.
Don't Wake Up is a page turner. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's thoughtful writing - from authentic characters to realistic dialogue to descriptive narrative. I couldn't read it fast enough. I highly recommend Don't Wake Up
What does "NO" mean? Waking up on a an operating table strapped down for a procedure you didn't consent to. This book was very thrilling for me! I enjoyed it very much. What really happens in the room on the operating table? Did anything happen was it all just a hallucination? Is anything real? I think this is a best thriller I have read in a while and it kept me on the edge of my seat. * I received this book from Netgalley and this is my honest review*
Thank you Netgalley. A gut gripping read that will grasp you right from the start. You just have to keep turning the pages as its impossible to try and guess the end. Loads of twists and turns.
Liz Lawler offers a psychological suspense story dark in its possibilities, chilling in its possibilities and down-right terrifying. A good book by a good capable author you can count on offering spell-binding prose.
Don't Wake Up starts with a bang and doesn't let you go until the last page! Somewhat creepy in the beginning but stay with it, the ending is explosive!
4.5 Stars
This is your typical psychological thriller where the main character is slowly suffering someone's ill will, yet no one believes her. It also happens to be quite a good example of the same.
Alex leaves work one night to meet her boyfriend, she wakes up and finds herself tied to an operating table, the person looming over her asks her a question, the answer to which will determine what happens next. Alex next comes round in front of her hospital colleagues. She was found in the car park, possible knocked out by a branch. No one believes her tale of the stranger, not even her closest friends. They all believe she is losing her mind. Connected to something that happened to her a year or so ago. But, is her mind all she is losing... as other stranger things start to happen to Alex, is she is in danger of losing much much more, including her life?
Ooh, this book did grab me from the off and kept its grip firm until the very end. I really felt for Alex as she struggled to get people to believe her. As things started crumbling around her, as her world literally imploded around her. In fact, I read pretty much from start to finish in only a couple of sittings, I really needed to know how it all panned out.
Alex was a great character. Wounded by something that happened about a year ago, she even begins to doubt herself at times, adding a new layer to the mix. It was fascinating watching her as she tried to piece together the who and how and, more importantly, the why. The other characters were a bit hit or miss to me. I always wonder about these books, how people who know and trust and understand other people can have a complete about face and turn on them on a knife edge. Here, in this book, this wasn't too badly represented as there were a decent amount of people still rooting for Alex throughout. She really didn't help herself at times as her behaviour spiralled but then again, when you feel you have nothing left to lose...
Pacing was good. We started with a bang and then the pace slowed down and things started bubbling, or festering if you like, and the tension and action starts to climb towards the end, where it ups a notch and we have a veritable race to the end.
All in all, a very decent dark psychological thriller that kept my attention throughout and left me satisfied at the end. I might have found me another author to watch.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
This story centers around Dr.Alex Taylor. She wakes in an operating theatre. She has no memory of how she got there. She soon realises that it is not what it seems and her life is in danger. When she awakens again she is in her own hospital with her friends looking after her. Sure of what happened to her she watches as one by one her friends and colleagues start to disbelieve her story....surely it's not all in her head.
Add into the mix a missing nurse, a dead prostitute, a boyfriend that is just slightly "off", a copy that hates her and a copy that wants to believe her but just can't.....well that gives you one hell of a story. This book was an addictive read, it breezed along compelling you to read just one more page.
This is a fantastic novel that will hook you right in and leave you suspecting every single charachter. Easy five stars!
Liz Lawler has been down in the trenches of a hospital, and brings all the drama - and terrifying possibilities - to life in "Don't Wake Up." Convinced she's been assaulted, Alex is forced by everyone around her to consider the possibility only her imagination has violated her. Lawler crafts relationships with Alex that define true love, true selfishness, and true skepticism.
Don't Wake Up takes the reader to some frightening places not often seen outside a haunted insane asylum, and absolutely challenges the reader to figure out what's real and what's not. Stay with her until the very end to find out whose motives are true, and whose are deadly.
