Many thanks to NetGalley for giving me an electronic copy of Don't Wake Up. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Dr. Alex Taylor wakes up in the middle of a nightmare, restrained and violated in the worst way. As she tries to tell her story to anyone who will listen, Alex soon discovers that being the victim can lead to the worst sort of victimization.
This psychological thriller had problems from the beginning, especially regarding plot and characterization. Alex is a respected physician, yet her story is not believed from the beginning by mostly everyone. This idea seemed more like a plot point than a logical way for the story to go. As far as the police involvement, this too was completely unrealistic. I found it hard to believe the backlash against this particular victim, especially by those who knew her well. The spiral that Alex took downward was the only part of the book that seemed authentic and on point. Overall, Don't Wake Up is an average read and just does not stand out among the other novels in the genre.
Don't Wake Up - Liz Lawler
This was an ok book, I have to admit it wasn't as good as I was hoping but still worth a read. I did feel heart sore for the main character and the amount of things that happened to her and not a soul believed or tried to help her. I felt that there should have been some dots joined up by the police and other services earlier in the novel than it did.
I will recommend this to my other reader friends.
Read for an honest review. Thank you Netgalley and Bonnier Zaffe Tenty7
I did not enjoy this novel - as i've mentioned before, there is a trend for this type of pulp-fiction crime novel and it felt like i'd read this before as the plot is similar to other novels. Well written but, ultimately, not great.
"Dr. Alex Taylor wakes up tied to an operating table. The man who stands over her isn't a doctor.
But when Alex re-awakens, she's unharmed - and no one believes her horrifying story, they think she was just hit by a falling branch, because she was found in the hospital car park knocked out, but relatively unharmed. Ostracised by her colleagues, her family and her partner, she begins to wonder if she really is losing her mind. And then she meets the next victim and the madness continues."
This was an utterly compelling gripping read that I could not put down. I was so involved with Dr. Alex Taylor and totally believed her, but could completely understand why no one else would, as the perpetrator was so evil and so clever and tied everyone's mine (including mine) up in knots.
I had an inkling of who was tormenting her, but could not work out how or why until the end of the book, which was so fast paced that after I had read the last chapter I had to go back and read it again just to get my head around it.
The only bit I was not comfortable with was the unnecessary demise of Dylan the rat.
For a first novel, so well written and obviously well researched and I can't wait to read her next one.
"Don't Wake Up" had a very good beginning and I was thoroughly hooked. However, as the story progressed I lost interest. I kept saying 'what happened last year' and didn't explain what actually happened last year before halfway through the book. If you can figure out the plot, or you think you can, after revealing a single incident, is the plot good enough? I hate when books, all books, refer to 'what happened back then' and never tell you what happened because it reveals too much. It's definitely a pet peeve and I'd figured the incident out (in broad strokes) a good time before the reveal, so I really didn't see the point in any of it.
"Don't Wake Up" is unfortunately a thriller that I didn't enjoy in spite of the great beginning.
Great story! Loosely written! Creepy with twists and turns, i don’t think I figured it out until near the end. I liked it and it was a quick read.
What a beginning.... I cannot wait to read the rest. This promises to be intriguing and full of twists and turns. I have never read a Liz Lawler book before, but I am going to be looking for this one as soon as it hits the shelves.
An enjoyable thriller. Apologies, I forgot to leave a review when I finished it which means I now struggle to remember pertinent points to comment on.
Character development superbly engaged the reader with the lead character. Opening chapter quickly established knife edge suspense and in fact you wanted to go back to the opening to check for clues before the denouement
A thoroughly enjoyable read
This was an intriguing read. There were many characters and their POVs that seemingly made the heroine appear like she was unfit and unreliable as a narrator, but it read a bit more like one whole gaslighting campaign. And while I do believe that women are more likely to NOT be believed when she declares a crime has been committed to herself or others. These stories bring an awareness to really work with a woman rather than against her word.
I enjoyed the pace and plot, but toward the end, when all unfurls and the culprit is revealed, I felt the story dragged on until its conclusion. But I did enjoy the writing. There were some things that made me pause and wonder if the heroine would truly act a certain way or do a certain thing because I felt it was thrown in to move the story forward.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book.
Don’t Wake Up plays into our primal fears. Imagine waking up, bound and at the mercy of evil. Disturbing does not even to start to describe the fear. Nightmarish to say the least. Give it a whirl for sure!
A good thrilling read, it may keep you awake at night simply because you want to know the outcome! Liz Lawler is an author to watch out for.
Alex Taylor wakes up on the operating table ! The choice she is given is unspeakable ! Whoa !!! Horrifying !! This author is a remarkable storyteller ! This story is dark and disturbing and gets right under your skin ! A great read !
Thanks to Netgalley and Bonnier Zaffre for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review ! #Netgalley #BonnierZaffre #DontWakeUp
I could not get into this book. I felt this scenario has been done many times before and seems played. Unfortunate, as the blurb made the book sound interesting, but to me it was not.
Adored this book. Loved the perspective. Brilliant and recommended
What if it doesn't look like you were harmed when you were attacked? What if it casts doubt on your attack itself? What if your credibility begins to ebb away but you know you and others are still in danger? Very clever medical thriller with a few strong twists.
Well I was utterly gripped by the very first few pages in this book - super scary and engaging, Don't Wake Up by Liz Lawler is most certainly a page turner.
I am not sure if this is a debut but if it is then it is very accomplished. I read it very quickly, mainly because I didn't want to put it down!
There are some strong characters throughout the book, some likeable and some not so likeable, I would enjoy reading more books involvingDetective Inspector Turner and I hope this may be the beginning of a series. I admit to a teensy amount of disappointment that a certain love angle didn't come to fruition - but hey, am sure Liz Lawler has further books up her sleeve so who knows!
I had an inkling quite early on as to who the perpetrator was, but not why so it was still satisfying once that became clear... A bit of an unusual motive and lots of red herrings to look out for.
All in all, this is a book to be devoured in one or two sittings. Don't take it too seriously, enjoy it for the suspense and the drama and you won't be disappointed.
This was a great read. I Loved the trials that Alex went through and tried to see it from both sides. I wasn’t sure if I wanted her to end up with Greg or with Nathan, but either of them were better than Patrick. I even felt sorry for Dylan :(. I would certainly read more stories like this and would support a series that followed both the police and medical teams to help solve crime. One of the best bits for me was the later conversation with Laura. Great book and great read would certainly recommend
So I feel like it's a little difficult to rate this book. I received an ARC, and like many ARC editions, there are quite a few typos and grammatical errors. These errors actually prevented the story from flowing well. I found myself reading and re-reading parts to try to understand what was going on. One paragraph would be talking about one character at one point in time, then the very next paragraph (with no indication of a time lapse) would be about an entirely different character in time.
But outside of those issues, I think it was fair of me to give this a solid 3 star rating. The concept was interesting, and I never quite predicted who was behind the madness. It started strong for me and was quite creepy when you try to put yourself in her shoes! It's one of those book that you don't love, but you don't hate. It keeps you engaged and you want to keep reading to know how it ends, but once you've finished (and you've read Alex's final confession) you're just kind of left feeling... meh.
I did not enjoy this ridiculous book at all and skipped to the end which I very rarely do. Very boring format and over the top storyline. I have worked in an A&E team so way too ott for me.
