Great book! Couldn't put it down! Loved the story, the characters and the way it was told. Thought the journalist's interview interspersed with the story was great. It dealt with domestic violence and other difficult topics sensitively.
Another great read from Liane Moriarty. A fine story that anyone who has waited for their children outside a school can relate too. Rich v poor. Helicopter v uninvolved. Working mum v stay at home mum. The friendships and animosity are all here leading up to the 'event' at the trivia night. Unputdownable.
All I can say is Oh My! This book just makes you keep reading. Having heard of the story before I got the book I knew some of what was going to happen in the book and knew who was going to die but I didn't know how etc and I couldn't put the book down until I found out.
The story follows the lives of Madeline, Celeste and Jane as their kids start the journey through school in kindergarten. You also see some of the story through the other parents of the school. The story covers many controversial topics such as bullying and domestic violence but with great sensitivity and poise.
The characters have great depth and the psychological twists and turns are great.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story with loads of twists turns romance and mystery!
Have to admit I started this a bit snootily - I wasn't expecting it to be such a clever read with great character development and some delicate and honest treatment of domestic violence in its reality. Recommended
What an excellent well written book! The story follows a story around women and their children in a small town and a murder that happens which unravels through reading the book! Even if you have seen the tv series (and loved it)
Big Little Lies was such a fab book I couldn't put it down. As usual with Liane great twists and turns throughout and it draws you in from the first few pages. Another fab book by this author.
It took some time to get into the plot but once in it is a story that you can't put down.
Didn't know what to expect with this book and as it went on I thought it was a bit long winded. Boy was I wrong. The plotline was amazing and the way the story was interspersed with the current dialogue was amazing and kept me guessing the end all the way through. Loved every one of the characters and their stories. An excellent read.
Great read, on so many levels!
This made me chuckle, I'm sure most mums can relate in a variety of ways! Playground politics, mums wear the pants and rule the roost! There is however a sobering moment, what goes on behind closed doors and all that... she tells it like it is, real everyday living. One thing is for certain though, you go back to school when the children do!
I couldn't put this down and had to read it in one sitting it was brilliant..so clever!
This is a book that is very hard to put down .It was one of the most entertaining books I have ever read ,a story filled with murder and mystery but funny as well Loved it !!!!!
An addictive mystery. Full of suspense and a wonderful slow reveal. There were so many little mysteries intertwined. I didn't have a hunch about what was going to happen, I had a dozen possibilities. Right up until the end there were so many ways it could've gone, making this a read that went by incredibly quickly.
There are a number of dark topics covered throughout the story - murder, domestic abuse, sexual assault, but the tone of the book is generally quite light. It is fun and witty and I enjoyed the mix of drama and gossip alongside the darker secrets.
Recommended for all fans of contemporary mystery, especially parents of young children and those with a sense of humour!
I watched the television mini series of the same name and loved it, so I jumped on the chance to read the book. Big Little Lies is one of those novels you stay up late reading, you don't want to put it down and the author keeps the pace quick with surprises in every chapter. The theme of dark doings in well heeled communities isn't new, but Big Little Lies gives it a fresh outlook. I love the characters, all of whom are so well described, you can easily picture each of them in your mind's eye. You can empathise and even identify with some of them. The Australian setting is well described and very appealing. Definitely one for your Summer reading shelf. I look forward to more from the author.
I wanted to read this before the TV show started and i'm so glad as i did. I found the three central women fascinating and their friendship utterly intriguing. This was a great story and i love the strong friendships that were at the core of it.
I really love the way this author writes. Although I thought this was a subject matter that I wouldn't fin very appealing, this gripped me as a result of the cool and hilarious observations of the parents.
Good story as well wit a tough domestic violence thread covered honestly.
Excellent. Liane Moriarty has done it again!!! This will be read again and again.
Excellent book. Great main characters and plot. I would recommend this book.
Big little lies - no spoilers - It's interesting that the reviews on this book appear to relate to the TV programme as it begins in a fairly overtly scripted format - each character introducing their view of an event which we will undoubtably spiral towards as the story unfolds.
And spiral it does, not in an irritating way but in an enjoyable way - I actually felt completely happy to be told this story any way LM wanted to tell it - I trusted her from the start with my expectations - this book became, in a very short period of time, my friend. Mean girls, chick lit whatever the label I was not going to be put off steaming along into this book into the wee small hours of at least three nights.
The relationships of the women in the book had a lot to do with it. They are expertly laced together, avoiding homogenised characterisation and eliminating opportunity for confusion with brilliant storyteller tricks - liane Moriarty is a class act.
She gets under your skin and knows your motherly thoughts. She surprises you just when you are comfortable with your idea of what's going on with a random thought expressed entirely out of the blue. Wicked, funny and endearing her writing makes you the reader a conspirator. So clever!! Thankyou, thankyou netgalley for this one and for the rest of Liane Moriartys work that have just risen to the very top of my TBR pile.
This is my first read of a Liane Moriarty book and I have to admit I found it engaging and entertaining. Set in Australia in a Sydney suburb, it has the measure of certain small communities and focuses on three women. Madeline is feeling bitter about her ex-husband and his new family, Celeste is beautiful, thin, and rich, seems to have everything including the envy of other women, and incomer Jane become friends on a orientation day at their childrens' kindergarten at Pirriwee Public School, Its a world of competitive mums, gossip, smothered parenting, the past and secrets. An accusation of one child bullying another starts to draw the battlelines between the parents.
However, once you start penetrating the surface, a number of dark issues emerge such as rape, bullying, domestic abuse and less than happy lives. And oh, yes, those big and little lies. Then there is murder and mystery at the school trivia night with the police interviewing parents. This is a story that I found myself drawn into and it even has a twist. It homes in on the divide between what is happening in the private personal sphere and the public face and gloss. A read that definitely captured my attention. I haven't seen the tv series yet but have heard many good things about it. Thanks to Penguin Michael Joseph for an ARC.
Absolutely must read if you like these kind of shows. The writing from Liane is amazing and easy to read with all the twists. Making you not leaving the book alone for several hours. Big Praise for Liane and she deserves it.
