I read and enjoyed 'The Teacher' but somehow missed out on 'The Secret', however that didn't really make any difference to my enjoyment of 'The Angel'.
Grey & Miles are a good police partnership & good friends. They both have 'real' lives away from work that manage to intrude on the case they are working. Imogen struggles to do her job whilst continuing her relationship with an ex-con and Adrian is sure that his ex-wife's current partner is up to something rather shady.
Someone is found dead after a fire in a disused signal box. Gabe- a lad who cannot seem to fit in with his parent's expectations admits he lit a fire but had no knowledge of anyone else being under the signal box. He is kept on remand accused of manslaughter even though Miles & Grey believe him..
What does this death have to do with abuse at children's homes and suspicious charity donations? There is a link there somewhere and Grey & Miles try to solve the mystery and maybe get Gabe out of prison.
I really enjoyed the police procedural art of the story, but for me the highlight was the character of Gabe and his prison experiences. He was a great character that you couldn't help rooting for.
All in all a great read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for this five star read.
The book is about a woman’s affair being exposed by a near tragedy.
It was good in places but very confusing in others. It felt like the book had been written by two different people at the beginning, it needed a bit more detail especially around some of the police interviews.
I could not relate to the police and the only person I was rooting for throughout the story was Gabriel. He went through so much but even then, there could have more detail over what happens to him. You still want everything to work out for him.
The police that are DS Adrian Miles and DS Imogen Grey they are not that likeable and the first part of the book was quite slow and I did not care about them. But as the book went on you wanted things to work out for Adrian because he was going to loose his son. As the book went on you got to see that Adrian does have a back bone and protects his loves one. It takes a long time to get to this with little detail. There is a good twist to the story at the end which you do not see coming.
I definitely enjoyed the second part more than the beginning due to it feeling like it was written by 2 different authors. I am glad I kept reading and it was the Gabriel character that kept me reading. It is a shame that there is no follow up to what happens to him. A book following up his life would be great.
Katerina Diamond does it again! Great thriller! I love the characters of Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles, and the relationship between them, the way they bounce of each other is brilliantly written and you cannot fail to be drawn into the dark mysteries that they come across. I love it! If you read 1 thriller this Autumn, make it this one!.
Katerina Diamond writes books that simply must be devoured. As soon as these books hit my Kindle everything else around me is forgotten; eating, sleeping, socialising all go out the window. I must read her latest offering.
Needless to say "The Angel" did not disappoint. In fact each book that Diamond offers gets better and better. The reintroduction of detectives Grey and Miles ultimately gives each new story a feeling of familiarity that draws the reader in but by no means is this book a repeat of any of the previous offerings.
"The Angel" introduces us to Gabriel, a teenage goth, who gets seemingly and innocently mixed up in a gruesome murder that is at the hands of higher powers. Gabriel is incarcerated for this crime but all is not as it seems. He starts as a rather weak character who must draw upon his own strength to survive his time in a prison dominated by the shady Asher, who has power over everyone. The ever intuitive Miles and Grey know that something is off and must use whatever means possible to find the true perpetrator before Gabriel succumbs to the evils of prison life.
Naturally with higher powers at large we find ourselves rooting for Gabriel, Miles and Grey as they each are victimised by the elements at large. Can the crime be solved before it is too late? Will the higher powers just keep getting away with their crimes? How are all of these crimes interlinked?
There are lots of twists and turns and I found myself being constantly shocked by what I was reading. What I will say is that it was good to some of the characters finally get their comeuppance and I cannot wait to read the next installment of this series.
This is an absolutely stunning book, a great story perfectly executed. It was one of the few books that I had to have a day to get over, I just couldn't start another book because it played around my head for hours.
We start with a prologue from back in 1986 and I tried to keep this all in mind whilst reading the rest of the book knowing that there would be some relevance later. When I finished the book, I totally got it but had to come back and re-read the prologue, just to reassure myself.
Chapter 1 starts right up to date in 2017 with the opening line “Gabriel Webb was a killer. He didn't know it yet, but before the day was out he would know what it felt like to take someone's life.” I was intrigued from the start and just had to know who had died, how and why Gabriel would take someone's life.
Gabriel is a complex character, in fact all the characters are flawed and complex but this makes for excellent reading. He and his girlfriend, Emma, are both Goths, they dress for themselves and are misfits in society, but underneath all the black trousers, chains and face paint are two loving and caring people. As the first line indicated, by the end of the day Gabriel was sitting in a police cell being questioned about a body.
The two detectives, Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles, could solve this case quickly but Imogen has a nagging feeling and a soft spot for Gabriel, and too many coincidences play on Adrian's mind, that they have to dig deeper. They have their work cut out to solve the murder and obvious mystery surrounding it, the case is not at all straightforward and it really takes its toll on both of them, particularly memories coming to the surface for Imogen. The murder is not simply about one person killing another, it's so multi-faceted, wheels within wheels that in reality, it's doubtful the case would really be solved.
The chapters mostly run in turn with Gabriel's life and then the two detectives. I couldn't wait to get back to Gabriel's chapters to find out how he was surviving in the young offenders' detention centre. He had such a hard and violent time and was totally unprepared for it – a real eye opener.
I loved all the characters, Imogen and Gabriel particularly, and they were so well constructed that they felt like real people, someone I might know.
This is the first book I've read by Katerina Diamond and although this one is book 3 in the detective series it is a complete story and can be read as a stand alone novel. I would totally recommend starting with book 1, The Teacher, and move on to book 2, The Secret – I've already loaded them onto my Kindle ready to start over again.
Katerina Diamond really knows how to write a thriller. Her brilliant writing style and short chapters add to the suspense. I read most of this book in one go. The plot is definitely in the edge of your seat category. Some of the scenes in this book are horrific and hard to read. I felt that the subject of child abuse was dealt with in an acceptable way. The plot in this book is complicated and has been brilliantly written and put together really well. The only thing that stopped me giving this book a 5 is that I would have liked it more if it was slightly shorter. I read books depending on their description and I am not put off by the number of pages. I just feel this book would have kept the suspense a bit better if it had been slightly shorter. When is the next book out?
The Blurb :
When a burned body is found in a disused signal box, suspicion falls on lonely teenager Gabriel Webb. There’s no doubt he was at the scene of the crime, but does he really deserve what awaits him in prison?
DS Imogen Grey is certain there’s more to the case than meets the eye. But while she struggles to convince those around her of the truth, her partner DS Adrian Miles is distracted by his own demons.
When a brutal double murder is reported, their investigation is stopped in its tracks. Is the body in the box even who they thought it was? The duo realise Gabriel might have been locked up for a crime he didn’t commit. But with enemies watching Gabriel’s every move, they may be too late.
My Thoughts :
This is the third book in the series after The Teacher and The Secret. Both proving to be a massive hit. This new installment was just as good, if not better.
DS Imogen Grey and her partner DS Adrian Miles are back with a tense, gripping, fast paced read. Told from two points of view that worked really well.
This has a great support cast with realistic charactors. I really enjoyed the prison scenes, I felt it portrayed it in the correct way.
I really like the covers of this series too, they grip you and just shout read me.
Katerina Diamond makes sure with its twists and turns this is one book that you wont be able to put down and it will leave you guessing right up until the very end. Looking forward to the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was gripped from start to finish. This is the 3rd book in the Imogen Grey series and each one just gets better.
The book starts with teenager Gabriel Webb being arrested, he started a fire in a disused signal box but and is charged with manslaughter when a burned body is found there.
The book is written in alternating chapters , Gabriel and his life on remand and that of the investigation.
There is another double murder which seems to have connections to the body in the signal box and then a sub plot where Grey’s partner is investigating his ex wife’s husband. Lots of loose ends are tied up in this book and you really should read the two earlier ones for the back story
I really enjoyed this book. Great storyline, wonderful main characters and a very good read. I would recommend this book.
In the past couple of weeks I have read all three Imogen Grey books and it’s definitely become one of my favorite series. Katerina Diamond has made her way onto my auto-buy list.
As with the first two books in the series, there is a lot going on in this story. There are several mysteries with connecting threads and Diamond really weaves them together effortlessly. I never felt confused and even though I didn’t know how things would come together, I knew that they would. Another thing I love about Diamond’s writing is that even though she has very intricate plotlines, she does not sacrifice any character development. I feel like many books focus on one or the other, but she really pulls off both. Even though it means that the books are a little longer than I usually like to read, I don’t mind the length because of how engrossed in the story I am.
In The Secret we got a lot of Imogen’s background and in The Angel we get more of Adrian’s. He’s not a perfect person by any means, but I adore him. He’s gone through a lot in his life, and in this book, and I really admire how he still manages to just keep going. I love his partnership with Imogen and how much they trust each other and are there for each other. I still like that their friendship is platonic, though I wouldn’t mind if it moves in a different direction in the future. Which brings me to Dean. I absolutely loved Dean in The Secret and I have to say he was one of the reasons I was anticipating this books so much. His relationship with Imogen is very complicated and it might very well be a circumstance where love is not enough to make it work, but I’m still shipping these two hard.
The other POV we get in this book is Gabriel, a young, slightly rebellious, guy who is really a sweet kid at heart. He gets arrested for inadvertently killing a man from a fire he started and winds up in jail. As you may expect, a young cute guy in prison attracts the wrong kind of attention. I felt so, so bad for all that Gabriel had to go through, but I really liked getting his POV and seeing how he grew as a person because of it.
Overall, I just really loved The Angel. Katerina Diamond weaves together a complex mystery with really compelling characters. I felt like this book was a little less dark than the first two in the series and I liked that. I also like that justice is always served in her books, though there is often a bit of a moral grey area included. This series has become one of my favorites and I’m really going to miss Imogen and Adrian until their next book.
Overall Rating (out of 5): 4 Stars
Gabriel is your typical goth/emo. His parents don't understand him, he wears a lot of black, basically he's a good kid who just wants to spend time with his girlfriend Emma, preferably in bed. But one silly bit of bravado leads to a body of a homeless man been found in a burnt out shed and Gabriel been a guest at her majesty's pleasure. His arrest is possibly one of detectives Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles easiest if least satisfactory arrests ever. But Imogen is convinced there's more to the case. A brutal double murder shortly after leads to surprising developments and the possibility that they have the wrong man. But in the meantime Gabriel is stuck in prison, at the mercy of a manipulative bully. Can Grey and Miles prove the links in time to save him?
First off can someone please assure me I'm not the only one Grey/Miles shipping? Seriously though - they have some chemistry going on. Just me? We'll move on.
So this book. We'll it's more excellent work from Katerina Diamond. She's got a killer duo in Miles and Grey, it's pretty addictive reading about them. And in this novel you have so many threads been drawn together - nothing is a coincidence. Even an innocuous comment about something lost ends up been important. Again there are some scenes that are violent and upsetting but they are plot driven rather than been there just to be shocking. The prison scenes are worth a novel of their e own - in a way this was a two for one deal.
This series just goes from strength to strength.
Katerina Diamond is getting better and better! This is like a book of two halves. The first part is a build up, I wasn't sure where she was taking the story and the second part is full of menace and suspense. I read it in 24 hours. Grey and Miles are investigating a case of arson. Gabriel Webb makes a terrible mistake that lands him in jail. Grey's criminal boyfriend Dean is having flashbacks to his traumatic past. A horrific double murder changes everything. All of the strands come together but maybe not as the reader first thinks. Thank you Netgalley for an advance copy of this book.
I have been a HUGE fan of this author ever since her first book The Teacher, a book that completely lived up to all its hype. It was shocking and gory and absolutely terrifying but had me and many other readers gripped. One of the main reasons I loved it so much was the characterisation. I just loved Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles- their teamwork and camaraderie felt effortless and realistic and I was desperate for more! The Secret followed and kept up the momentum of this compelling crime series which leads me to her latest bestseller The Angel. Has she run out of steam yet? OMG I am so pleased to tell you that she hasn't and this is yet another 5 star addition to the series!
The opening chapter is one of the most shocking ones I have come across recently and catapulted me directly into such a dark and disturbing storyline, but I couldn't for the life of me work out how it related back to that prologue! Both Imogen and Adrian are still having problems with their personal lives and it's that outside influence and insight that really lifts this book up onto a different level. I don't want to go into any details as they may prove spoilers for the previous books, although if you haven't read them already then you are really missing out!
The scenes set within the prison here were terrifying. I really felt for Gabriel as there seemed to be more fear and violence inside than anything he faced whilst in the outside world. And all the time we are unsure WHY?! This was the thread that I found the most distressing, watching Gabriel desperately try to stay out of trouble but unsure who he can trust. I felt so helpless, I mean it's the stuff of everyone's nightmares isn't it? Locked away for a crime you didn't commit and nobody believing it when you protest your innocence? But then the crimes kept coming, each one more abhorrent than the next and Grey and Miles have to battle their own demons if they are to help save Gabriel.
You may need a strong stomach for some of the scenes described here but it seems to be the authors trademark now to explore unspeakable crimes and the damage they wreck along the way, families destroyed and lives ruined, with her flawed but amiable duo there to pick up all the pieces. But for me this dark and gritty series is a must read and I would highly recommend it to other lovers of that subgenre of crime fiction. I am now on countdown again for more Grey and Miles.....bring it on!!!!
When Gabriel Webb fit arrested he openly admits to starting a fire within a disused signal box, but when the police reveal a burned body was found in the building Gabriel resigns himself to a life in prison for manslaughter.
DS Imogen Grey is convinced there’s more to the case than meets the eye, and sets out to prove her theory with little help from her partner DS Adrian Miles, who is busy battling problems of his own.
When a vicious double murder is reported Grey and Miles start to make connections between the two cases, but will they find proof in time to save Gabriel from a sentence he might not deserve?
This is the third instalment in this series, and again I found myself completely enthralled. Alternating between the points of view of Gabriel, Imogen and Adrian keeps this thriller fast paced, and I found myself repeatedly being held to the curse of “just one more” at the end of each chapter. Luckily for me, and my sleep deprivation, they’re fairly short.
I have grown increasingly fond of Detective series over the last couple of years, as opposed to standalone’s you get to build a real connection with the main protagonists. In this case it has been enjoyable to witness the changes in the relationship of Imogen and Adrian. The partners grow closer with each book and the sarcastic quips and camaraderie between them often has me chuckling to myself. Not something that can always be said of the crime thriller genre.
The writing as always is very good and well thought out, with both minor and major twists in the plot it amazes me how Diamond herself keeps track, with cleverly hidden details throughout that the reader doesn’t take into consideration before the end.
As concluding chapters go this one was a curveball to say the least, but it will definitely keep readers intrigued for book four. I for one can’t wait!!
The first book from Katerina Diamond I've read and wow, how thrilling and surprising read. I couldn't put it down and only hardly managed to make myself do anything else but read.
I'm a bit sad I haven't read her first two books from series before I started this one but it also worked well as stand alone and I will make sure I'll read them soon.
Story kept me guessing and opening chapter was stuck in my head until the end, and just couldn't work it out. Just the way it should be so I loved it.
I will recommend it to anyone who likes this genre as it's not to be missed.
Another excellent book in this series. Looking forward to the next book.
I love Katerina Diamonds Work and each book has left me wanting more from her.
I will not give anything at all away by writing a long synopsis.
What I will do is give a few lines of my thoughts of this book.
It kept me hooked from the prologue, I also listened in audio in case I had made something out of the book that wasn’t there! But no it was an incredible read ! and an incredible listen.
My gut was utterly wrenched with this brilliantly written book, every emotion that you would never hope to have to feel is right there to feel be ready !
It was an utter maze of brilliant trails to follow making sure you flip page after page to the next chapter no matter what you are doing ...and I did NOT see what was coming!
This book was better than the last and as good as her first
A MUST read I can’t reccommend it enough!
I loved this book it was very well written and gripped me from the first page. I've loved all Katerina's books. Can't wait to read more.
I absolutely LOVED this book, as I did the writer's two prior instalments - wonderful characters, likeable but not perfect and new people who just add to the whole saga - have already recommended this series to others who also love it.
Yet again Katrina Diamond has excelled with this book. Each book in the series gets better and better. I would highly recommend this one. 5 stars
