A cracking series. Detective Ruby Preston is a fantastic character. Her relationship with Nathan Crosby causes her quite a few problems as he is from a renowned criminal family. N this the second in the series, Nathan is the prime suspect for the murders of young women. A gripping crime thriller which has numerous twists and turns . Highly recommend!
I will admit that I did not read the first Ruby Parker novel in the series - and so this was my first introduction to Ruby, her squad and her complicated background.
I really enjoyed the first 30% of this book - it was fast paced, it was well written, and it was obviously well researched. Ruby is the detective lead on a young woman's murder ... which very quickly expands to a second murder victim. With a serial killer on loose, and her former lover being framed for the murders, Ruby is racing against the clock to find the murderer and save Nathan.
I found that it started to get very repetitive ... we spent so much time going over the same things - a female victim being tortured, Ruby going over her past relationship with Nathan, Ruby hating her flat, Ruby not wanting to take Nathan's help ... over and over. After all of that the ending felt flat and rushed ... Ruby was able to catch her criminal and after 67 chapters of blah blah blah everything is solved within just a few ... and wrapped with a nice bow. A little too quick and easy of an ending - more of the middle could have been purged and focus gone into the ending - which would have tied in the ending better with the rest of the story as well.
Sleep Tight was ok, but could have been better.
Well I seem to have fallen a little behind in my reading, and I'm playing catch up with some fantastic books. And here we have another amazing read by the very talented Caroline Mitchell.
I read and enjoyed the first book to feature Ruby Preston - Death note. So I was really looking forward to starting this. I started it as soon as little one had gone to school, and I'd raced round the house with the hoover and duster, just to make it look like I wasn't entirely lazy. This book then managed to take over my day. I sat down with it, and occasionally got up to make my self a cuppa, but I was soon sat down again each time clutching my kindle, enthralled in the pages of the book.
I was there with Ruby, working the case with her.
Ruby is one awesome character, her work/private life has a tough balance. And sometimes the two just can't help but cross over.
Women are going missing and being murdered, It's down to Detective Ruby Preston and her team to investigate.
Things seem a little to straight forward when they think they have the suspect early on in the case. But when another body is found it seems the police need to look elsewhere.
Nathan Crosby is Ruby's on off lover, the father of her child. As much as she tries to resist him there is chemistry between then can not be ignored. Nathan soon becomes prime suspect when body parts are found under his bed.
Does Nathan have anything to do with the murders or is he, like he says being set up.
Ruby is torn between her job and her feelings for super criminal Nathan. And it's going to take a lot for her to manage her job and her feelings.
An exceptional nail biting tense read. I would have no problems what so ever recommending this book and the previous book to anyone who likes a heart pumping, nail biting read.
I look forward to reading more from this author.
A fast paced thriller. Will keep you guessing until the last page. Think you have it figured out and then in comes another twist. Brilliantly written, great characters again.
Fantastic series love Ruby Preston and can't wait for the next installment
WOW! This novel gets off to a stonking start…
The doctor gave a satisfied nod as he lifted the stethoscope from the woman’s bare chest. ‘Ah, the heart of a lion. We’ll soon have you cleaned up. But now...a little music to ease the passage.’ He did not expect a response because he was talking to himself. It had been that way ever since people could no longer bear to be in his presence.
… Then you, the reader follow Detective Ruby Preston as she leads her team in East London to catch a serial killer.
I found Sleep Tight to be a very, very good book. I liked the way Caroline told her story. It was great how you got both sides of the tale, the police and the bad guy. The plot was quite involved and I liked how doubt was thrown at all the characters, hint, hint and hint making you wonder who might also be involved. The actions of the bad guy were very, very creepy and were very engaging.
It was a pleasure to read this novel and it gave me the same enjoyment I got from Line of Duty, a popular TV series centered around corruption within the British police service. There was lots of action and tension as Ruby raced to get the bad guy.
I had loved Caroline’s previous novel Witness and I found Sleep Tight to be just as good. Both these books get the top score of 5 stars from me. The crime thriller market is quite crowded but Caroline is a the top of the league.
Sleep Tight by Caroline Mitchell
Detective Ruby Preston Series Book #2
Publisher: Bookouture
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher Bookouture for the ebook ARC of Sleep Tight by Caroline Mitchell in exchange for an honest review.
A serial killer is stalking the streets of East London. Murdered young women have been found all over. The killer takes their bodies are recreates and poses them into different fairytale princesses.
Detective Ruby Preston is on the case with her team. She is being torn between her job and her lover, Nathan Crosby, who is an East End Criminal kingpin.
He becomes a main suspect as body parts of one of the murder victims have been found in his home.
Ruby is convinced that Nathan is being framed for murders of the young women. Will she be able to find the killer before he strikes again? And how well does she really know the man that she loves?
I found this book kind of hard to get into at first, I had a hard time staying focused and I didn’t really like the style of the writing. It took me a bit to get into the novel but once I did, I had a hard time putting it down! I give this book a rating of 4 stars. I did not read the first book in the series, Death Note. I do recommend reading this novel, and I would definitely read the next book in the series if there is going to be one!
My first book by author Caroline Mitchell - now looking forward to reading more of the Detective Ruby Prestion series. A serial killer turning his bodies into fairytale characters!! Didn't realise the Disney fairytales can have a much darker and violent twist to them.
Going to read the first Ruby book Love You To Death - Can't wait!
A killer is stalking young women in London. Their bodies are all posed into likenesses of fairytale princesses. Detective Ruby Preston is tracking the killer, but body parts are found at Nathan Crosby's home, who is her lover. Ruby believes Nathan is being framed, but the pressure on Ruby increases to find the killer before Nathan becomes the prime suspect.
I enjoyed this book. It held my interest from beginning to end. I haven't read the first book in the series, and I would like to go back and read it, too.
This book is the second in the Ruby Preston series and I thoroughly enjoyed this one as well!
Ruby Preston is in a bit of a pickle: she is investigating a serial killer and the father of her child is being accused of the crime. There are plenty of people who would want to frame Nathan for it, so inbetween trying to clear his name and trying to find who is actually killing young women and posing them as fairytale characters, Ruby has her hands full with Nathan's nasty brother and a whole other cast of characters in her work and personal life.
I found myself fully emotionally involved with Ruby's world - she walks such a fine line between her job as a police officer and her childhood, growing up on the wrong side of the tracks. There are a lot of grey areas in Ruby's life but she does a pretty good job of navigating her way through successfully. At the end of the day, she is a dedicated cop and gives her all to the job. I like, though, that she is also vulnerable here and there, it gave the book a bit of light to go with the shade and made me smile :)
Highly recommended read from me, can't wait until I can read the next one!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley.
Detective Ruby Preston is a breath of fresh air! I've read so many mystery/ thrillers now that sometimes the detectives can fall a little flat or just generally a bore but Ruby was a great addition to my reading repertoire.
Whilst thanking Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review, I must admit I did not know that this was part two in a series. In saying that though, this was a rare series book that I could just pick up and delve into and still understand what was going with characters that had appeared previously, without having read the first novel.
Bodies are turning up dressed in fairytale costumes in some sick game. Ruby's ex lover and father of her child is being framed for the crimes and Ruby is doing her best to get him cleared. Early on we find out who the killer is and from there it is a cat and mouse game to find them and find out why they're doing this. Whilst that's a different way of doing it, revealing the killer early on, it was quite refreshing. With the addition of a little twist at the end, this novel was well written and a nice touch. Will definitely read more if this series continues, maybe even going backwards and reading the first one.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the copy of this book.
I must start off by saying I love Ruby Preston. She is a good cop but also does some unorthodox things. I love that she wears red lipstick and wears it with pride. I love the relationship she has with Nathan, even though he is a bad guy but once can sense the chemistry between even from my e-reader screen lol.
Young women are turning up dead around town. The most disturbing thing is that the killer has staged them to look like fairytale characters. It was actually quite disturbing reading some of the things he had done. This is a gripping book which I could not put down. There were some twists and turns along the way and it was quite surprising to discover who was behind it all.
I highly recommend this book but would advise reading the first book in the series, it will give a better understanding of the characters. It can be read alone though.
Why I started this book in the evening ..... kept me awake a real page turner
Loved it and for fans of the author will grip them . Highly recommended
Loved this book cant wait for the next. I could not put this book down. I would definitely recommend
One of those brilliant books that hooks you from the start and entices you to keep turning the pages. Ruby has her work cut out when prostitutes are not only being murdered but “arranged” from fairy tales. Her daughter’s father is not far from the crime trail and this complicates things even further. I love books where the lead is a strong, determined character and Ruby is this and some. Her tenacity and personality shine through along with the camaraderie of her colleagues. There are crime books and there are good ones. This is a stunning one due to the depth of the writing that brings to life the story and the characters. Caroline’s detective background and expertise shows through in this macabre tale that has you holding your breath and wondering whatever will happen next. A captivating read.
I voluntarily chose to read this ARC and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased
SLEEP TIGHT is the second book in the Detective Ruby Preston series by Caroline Mitchell. After enjoying the first book, “Love You To Death”, I was anxious to read the next book. This is a great series with believable characters. This is a dark gripping serial killer thriller with a shocking twist.
A killer stalks the streets of East London. All over the area, murdered young women are discovered, their bodies posed into a sickening recreation of fairytale princesses. It was like stepping into a fairytale-Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid…but all the women were prostitutes who would not be missed.
Detective Ruby Preston has been assigned to the case to hunt down a serial killer…before he strikes again. But when body parts from the victims are found at the home of her lover, Nathan Crosby, Nathan contacts Ruby for her help, after a drug raid at his place. Ruby realizes that Nathan is being framed, and now becomes number one suspect! Nathan goes into hiding, while Ruby tries desperately to capture the serial killer.
It becomes increasingly difficult for Ruby to walk a fine line between her job in law enforcement and her ex-lover’s criminal background…a possible conflict of interest?
Ruby needed to connect the murders, to prove Nathan’s innocence. But what was the motivation behind the murders?
The reader catches glimpses of the serial killer, with some chapters being devoted to the killer. What reasons could he have for carrying out his deeds?
“Pets, like people, were disposable objects. There were too many of them in the world, and the loss of a few would make it a better place. Just because he didn’t care about his fellow human beings did not mean they were not a subject of great fascination-and in what other occupation would he be able to place his hands on real-life subjects.”
“Now he was an outcast . Money was no longer a necessity, and he was at least free to treat his betrayers with the contempt he felt.” He referred to his work as ART…he was creating Masterpieces!
Another great fast paced thriller with lots of twists and turns. Just like the last book, the ending is a surprise that you never would have guessed.
Many thanks to Caroline Mitchell, Bookouture and Netgalley for the digital copy of the book.
Much thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy of Sleep Tight which is my absolute pleasure to review. I had been waiting very impatiently for another Ruby Preston novel and not only did this not disappoint it exceeded my expectations and in my humble opiniion is the author's best book yet. There is a serial killer on the loose in East London who dresses his victims up in costume and Ruby Preston has her work cut out for her as she races against the clock to find him. Absolutely loved this book and you will too!
I was already a fan of Caroline Mitchell when I received this book. And I was thrilled to get an advance copy of Sleep Tight. Meet Detective Ruby Preston, driven to find a killer who captures young women and turns them into fairytale princesses. She also has to prove the innocence of Nathan, her lover who appears to have been framed for this crime. Her worlds collide as she has to bypass the procedures she lives by and enters into the criminal world that Nathan inhabits.
An edge of your seat read, I couldn't put it down.
Absolutely gripping from the first page. This book is so addictive. There's no unbelievable shocking twists but that doesnt stop it from being constant action and suspense. Bring on #3 in the series!
