Fantastic read. Dark and twisted, just how I like them! Great characters and story line. Looking forward to the next one.
This is the 2nd book in the 'Detective Ruby Preston' series by author Caroline Mitchell and it looks like she has another successful series on her hands following up from DC Knight. I had already read the first book in this series so I knew what to expect and my hopes were high for another great novel. Yet again Caroline Mitchell produces another piece of work of the highest quality and it is a certain success.
In this second novel a killer stalks the streets of East London. All over the area, murdered young women are discovered, their bodies posed into a sickening recreation of fairytale princesses. Detective Ruby Preston is leading the case to hunt down a disturbed individual who is using the women to realise his dark fantasies. But the case takes an unexpected turn when body parts are found at the home of her lover, Nathan Crosby and Ruby is torn between her job and her heart. She is convinced he is being framed and works round the clock to catch the killer and prove her lovers innocence.
This is a well paced story with some excellent characters and it is guaranteed to keep readers frantically flipping through the pages to find out more.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Fairy Tales turn into dark horror stories in this brilliant thriller. This is the second book in the Detective Ruby Preston Series. All your favorite fairy tales have come back to haunt you.
Young women are going missing and turning up dead as dark twisted corpse versions of our favorite fairy tale heroines. Who is behind their torture and deaths and how has Nathan become a suspect? Detective Preston is working the case and sometimes she plays by her own rules. Nathan s the reason why Ruby's boss is eyeing her suspiciously. He is only too aware of their attraction and does not like it.
I just loved this book and love Detective Ruby Prescott as well. Ruby's life is turned upside down both personally and professionally as she hunts down an evil sick killer. This story puts Ruby through the ringer as she has to go with her gut which leads her down the path she may not come back from.
The plot is exciting and horrifying and this series so far is very addicting. I read the first book and went into this book right away and devoured it. It is a dark gritty series and recommend it to serial killer lovers who love books like this. I find this series very similiar to Robert Bryndza. So go ahead and plunge into this series. If you want to see my review for the first book book look here.

This book was very exciting all the way to the end. I think it was a great thriller and scary book for me. I like that the killer was so different. I like the character for Ruby Preston. I guess you can say I enjoyed everything about the book. I have not read anything else from this author but this book was good enough to make me look and see what else Caroline writes. * I received this book from NetGalley----this is my honest review*
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for this review copy.
This is the second book in the Ruby Preston series. To be honest, I didn’t realise it was part of a series but whilst it can be read as a standalone it does make the back story easier to understand if they are read in order. I did find myself wondering what had happened in the previous book, so will definitely be going back and reading it!
Detective Ruby Preston is investigating the murders of young woman whose deaths have been set up to resemble fairy tales. Her ex-partner, on/off lover and crime lord, Nathan Crosby, is being set up as prime suspect number one, but it’s down to Ruby to get him off and the hook and find the killer.
I enjoyed this book. I did get confused with the back story of Ruby as I hadn’t read the first book. I liked her relationship with Nathan, and the fact that she’s a police officer but always just pushing herself over that fine line for the man she loves….and getting away with it!! The story was gritty and disturbing, but not too much that you didn’t want to carry on with it to find out who was the killer. You did find this out reasonably early on, but it didn’t spoil the story at all. Plenty of twists and turns and a great ending. If you like your police crime stories, then this is a definite read!
Four stars!
Wowsers....this book is fantastic. Caroline Mitchell keeps getting better and better! I’m so happy we are getting more from Ruby! She’s a detective that is just fascinating!
This book centers around Detective Ruby Preston and her team as they race to find the killer that has left a series of bodies cleaned and transformed into traditional fairytale characters. Everyone loves a good story right? Well, this is a KILLER of a story! All your favorite fairytales have come back to haunt you with their very unDisneylike telling. I love this!! It has made me want to go look up all these fairytales and see how they really went down.
To make matters even worse someone is trying to frame Ruby's old-current boyfriend (who knows, right?) for the murders. Ruby knows deep down that Nathan Crosby couldn't and wouldn’t do something like this but with her superiors on the hunt for him she has to work quickly as the bodies pile up. Can she prove his innocence and save him for once?
I love everything about Ruby and Nathan's relationship. It’s such a real relationship with real problems of family tossed in. I loved Ash! The Doctor was amazingly, creepy!!! He was so awesome, his disfigurement was left to my warped imagination to figure out how terrifying he looked. And just when you think it's all fallen into place… Caroline Mitchell hits you over the head with a book… a fairytale book, of course, of a twist. This book consumed me! But then, Mitchell always sucks me in!
I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I will leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.
Detective Ruby Preston’s search for a serial killer becomes frighteningly personal when her former lover is implicated in the case. Women are being murdered and left posed as fairytale princesses in London. Then body parts turn up at Nathan Cross’s home. Ruby can’t believe the man she still loves is involved in this depravity and sets out to prove his innocence. Yes, he is a criminal, but not the kind of man who would do something like this. But as the bodies pile up, Ruby knows she’s running out of time and a small kernel of doubt about Nathan begins to form. The killer in this story is revealed fairly early on, but Mitchell ratchets up the tension by creating a scary, sadistic predator.
Having thoroughly enjoyed the first Ruby Preston novel I was delighted to receive an advance copy of Sleep Tight, and I was not disappointed! This is a superb read and Ruby is a fascinating character. We learn much more about her personal life here, particularly her relationship with villain Nathan, with whom she has a daughter. The chase is on to find a serial killer who is taking prostitutes and posing them as fairy tale characters. Ruby has to bend the rules greatly to achieve results! Can't wait for book three!
This book was brilliant this is the first book I have read by Caroline Mitchell but I will certainly be reading more. Engaging story if you love a police investigation storyline you will love this book
Sleep Tight is the 2nd book in the Detective Ruby Preston series. I highly recommend reading the first book before reading this one. Even though this book was still well written, it is lacking the character development that was in the first book. You are missing the relationship history between Ash and his wife with her mental illness; Ruby and DCI Downes' "friendship" and even Ruby and Nathan's history growing up together. Luckily I just finished reading Love You to Death before reading this book. Everything was still fresh in my head or else I would have forgotten all these details or even gotten confused with other female lead detectives series that I have been reading.
A serial killer is murdering people and dressing them up like a fairy tale character. But it's the grimmest version and not the sweet sugarplum version that you tell your kids. Evidence is found at Ruby's ex-lover's, Nathan Crosby, house and it is up to her to find the true killer and stop her fellow coworkers from arresting Nathan.
Another great fast paced thriller with lots of twists and turns. Just like the last book, the ending is a surprise that you never would have guessed.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of Caroline Mitchell's "Sleep Tight" in exchange for a honest review.

I am voluntarily reviewing Sleep Tight through Bookouture and Netgalley through the publisher and Netgalley:
Detective Rudy Preston is on the search for killers, killers stalking the streets of East London. Will she be able to capture this serial killer before More fall victim?
Nathan Crosby is not only Detective Preston's boyfriend, but also the number one suspect in these murders. Could the man she loves, truly be guilty, or is he being framed as she believes.
Nathan has connections with the homeless all over London, which proves to be helpful to Ruby.
Just when Detective Preston thinks she has her suspect in custody, another murder takes place, when the suspect is in custody, eliminating him.
If you like suspenses that keep you on the edge of your seat, and leave you guessing until the very end, you will love Sleep Tight...
I give Sleep Tight five out of five stars.
Happy Reading...
Just when I thought Caroline Mitchell writing couldn't get any better with Love You To Death which was my favourite book that I read last year. She totally nails it with Sleep Tight and pulls out all the punches. OMFG what a book and what a series!
The story starts off with one gritty prologue then we follow Detective Ruby Preston on one twisted roller coaster ride on the hunt for a warped minded killer who stalks the streets of London and leaving the victims dressed up as fairy tale princess. Put someone is trying to frame bad boy hottie Nathan with body parts planted under his bed. Ruby has totally got her work cut out trying to catch the killer before Nathan becomes the number one suspect. Leaving Ruby torn between her job and her lover.
Wow, Wow, Wow I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen next in this nail biting story. I cannot tell you how much I love this series. Ruby is one kick ass detective who lives life on the edge and doesn't always do things by the book. For a start her lover Nathan isn't always on the right side of the law and Ruby knows it. Which makes this series unique.
Caroline's experience is shown throughout the whole of this story with the police procedure side of things. I actually felt like I was right there in the story. And like Love Me Death there is plenty of twisted and brutal murder scenes which totally turned my stomach and made me cringe.
Sleep Tight ticked all the boxes for me I cannot recommend it enough giving me a book hangover. Roll on the third book in the series.
If you're looking for a fast paced gritty story this is certainly the book for you. And without a doubt gets all the stars from me.
I was totally gripped from page one if this! Caroline Mitchell writes well, and pulls you in straight away until you cant bear to put the book down!
I enjoyed Caroline Mitchell's first book featuring Ruby Preston, so I was really pleased to see another in the series. I like Ruby Preston, she is a lady with lots of secrets and divided loyalties which makes for an interesting character. In this book Ruby is trying to catch a murderer who poses his victims like fairytale princesses- only he doesn't subscribe to the sanitised Disney version of Grimm's Fairy Tales- these have gone through a lot more than Disney would have you believe.
Ruby rushes to solve the mystery before more girls are killed as well as trying to steer her colleagues away from her lover who is being framed for the murders.
This was a fast paced read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for giving me the chance to read & review it.
That was an absolute humdinger of a book. I loved, loved, loved it.
Dark, scary and exciting this story had all the ingredients to make it one of the best thrillers I have read this year.
*waits for the next one*
Sleep Tight is the second outing for Detective Sergeant Ruby Preston. Ruby is a very unlikely copper having grown up with the East End gangs in London. Her liaison with well known gang boss Nathan Crosby is a very closely guarded secret.
Ruby finds herself with a dilemma when a nutter starts targeting local prostitutes and leaves their tortured and mutilated bodies dressed as Fairy Tale princesses. A routine drugs bust at the Crosby home reveals a gift box with the lungs and organs from one of the victims under Nathan’s bed. Who could get close enough to set him up?
Under pressure from Nathan’s unhinged brother Lenny to prove the Crosby’s innocence and also from the police to get Nathan behind bars Ruby finds herself taking dangerous short cuts in order to apprehend the killer and close the case.
These are seriously dark stories and won’t be to everyone’s taste but they are gripping thrillers that prove compulsive reading.

Everything you need from a great suspense novel. This book had some really great main characters, including Detective Ruby Preston and her bad guy/good guy kinda sorta boyfriend/baby daddy, Nathan Crosby. I really liked how all of the elements of this book came together. The relationship between Ruby and Nathan, although taboo, really added to the case and smudged the line between organized crime and legal police work. The thing I noticed about this book that was unlike the other suspense books I’ve read was that the killer was identified almost immediately. It was all the little details that we find out along the way that made this book so intriguing. Everything in this book was clear, from motive to the wheres and hows. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Caroline Mitchell, and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a free electronic ARC of this novel, in exchange for an honest review.
Detective Ruby Preston is seeking a serial killer- one who turns his victims into gruesome figures out of fairy tales. However, when clues begin to show that her lover, nefarious crime heir Nathan Crosby, may be involved, Ruby has to risk it all to find the perpetrator and bring him to justice, at whatever cost.
“Sleep Tight” is the second novel in the Ruby Preston series, by Caroline Mitchell. I did not read the first novel, but I was easily able to follow along and keep up with the characters and plot. It is not necessary to read the preceding novel to get a grasp on this one.
I found this novel to be very typical of a British crime novel- to those of you familiar with Robert Bryndza, you will find many similarities. This novel is told from the perspective of a powerful female police detective, someone who lives for the job and has a very guarded personal life, with few intimate relationships that aren’t based on drunken nights or bad decisions. Also similar to Bryndza, in this novel we hear from the perpetrator- a disfigured man with a grudge. There is also a twist at the end (which I won’t give away), that also seems to jump from the pages of other British crime writers.
That being said, I enjoyed Mitchell’s crime novels more than the rest. Her story is easy to read for a North American reader- the plot has good flow and the dialogue does not have as many British slangs as her counterparts. This novel could take place in any city across the world, attracting a wide audience of readers. I enjoyed the interesting aspect of the murderer using characters from fairy tales (Grimm’s fairy tales of course) in his crimes, and the time taken to develop the back story of the murderer.
Being new to Ruby and this crime series, I really enjoyed how Mitchell was able to develop the relationship between Nathan and Ruby. The two seemed very natural together, and I was able to quickly form a bond with the couple. Even though I did not follow them from the beginnings of their romantic entanglements, Mitchell was easily able to fill in the blanks.
Overall, the novel was easy to read and the fairy tale aspect made for an interesting story. The novel plays out like a lot of other British crime novels I have read as of late, so expect repetition and predictability. I liked Ruby and Nathan, and the entire police team, and the ending provides a satisfying conclusion for all the characters. This novel is definitely for those who enjoy a gory British crime novel, however it is so similar to other crime novels that it likely won’t stand out among the rest. Worth a read for fans of Angela Parsons or Robert Bryndza, Caroline Mitchell won’t disappoint.
This was my first encounter of reading all about Ruby's adventures but it certainly won't be the last. I'm already looking forward to reading the first book and future books as they come out.
The author literally brought the story alive, some of the scenes were so well written and the detail that went into them, you really felt like you were in the story experiencing it all first hand. My heart was literally in my mouth throughout parts of the book.
I found the story engaging and gripping from start to finish, there was quite a few characters but not too many that it was impossible to follow them within the story. As well as the main storyline it was truly great getting to know the characters, especially that of Ruby and Nathan.
It was a fast paced read, couldn't wait to turn each page to see what was coming next. Oh and that little twist come the end, definitely wasn't expecting that.
Please do give this book a read as i can highly recommend it.
