I was immediately drawn in to the macabre and chilling prologue and from that point forward, the reader is taken on a rollercoaster of intrigue and nail biting tension that builds through twists and turns to a satisfying and shocking conclusion.
In Ruby, author Caroline Mitchell, has created a fascinating character who is full of contradictions, not least in combining her job as detective with an ever-changing relationship with gangster Nathan Crosby and his family.
The author skilfully builds the dark, disturbing storyline whilst expertly weaving in the subplots, resulting in a true page-turner that keeps the reader guessing. I particularly enjoyed – if that’s the right word – the chapters from the point of view of the doctor and his ‘works of art’ . . . not for the faint-hearted!
Sleep Tight is, of course, the second book in the DS Ruby Preston series but if you fancy picking up this one first, it makes a cracking standalone read.
Five stars from me . . . and highly recommended!
The second book in the Ruby Preston series, I think this is even better than the first. Ruby is such an interesting character, a Detective but with strong ties to the criminal world. I really enjoyed delving further into her background, and getting to know her better.
The plot is exciting and horrifying, with young women being killed and staged to look like fairytale characters.
The book is brilliantly written, and I could not put the book down as there was so much going on.
I highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading more on Ruby Preston in the further.
This is the second in the Ruby Preston series. "WoW what a book".......I love the way Caroline writes and tells all her stories.
So make yourself a drink, sit in a comfy chair, turn your phone off, ignore the doorbell and open this book. Immerse yourself in Caroline Mitchell's latest offering 'Sleep Tight'. You will not be disappointed.
Caroline's books are so gripping that reading all of her books will only add to the experience and love for this author.
This series of books get better and better.
Excellent read. 5* read and well deserved. Well Done Caroline. x
I was surprised to learn this book was a respectable 350 pages, because I burned right through it like it was 200. It was really hard to put down. I LOVE the idea of a fairy tale killer. As many of us know, the Disney stories we all know are based on much darker and more violent tales. If you're not familiar with the originals, you'll get a little taste of them in this book.
Detective Ruby Preston is back, and she's as much of a troublemaker as ever. You'd think being a rule-breaker wouldn't lead to a job in the police force, but here we are. She's called to a crime scene when a young university student is found dead and exposed in a park. Ruby and her team barely have time to work on the case before another body is found not far from the first: a prostitute dressed and altered to look like a very familiar fairy tale princess. The two women could not have been more different, and the manner of death seems different as well... but Ruby can't shake the feeling that they're connected.
When crucial evidence is found at the home of Nathan, Ruby's lover, he goes underground. He's a major player in the criminal world, and very few know about their on and off again relationship and the adult daughter they share together. With pressure from Nathan and much more threatening pressure from his less charming brother, Ruby doesn't have much time to find the killer and clear Nathan's name... of this crime, anyway.
A very interesting killer and a brash but strong lead character make a great thriller. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series, whenever it becomes available!
Just as with the first book, I'm just not buying the relationship between Ruby and Nathan. It does add some heat and excitement, but you'd think she would have chosen between him and her profession long ago. And in my opinion... she needs to go with her profession!
I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Bookouture, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.
This review is written with thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my copy of Sleep Tight.
There is a killer at large in East London, who disguises his victims as fairy tale princesses, and it is the job of Detective Sergeant Ruby Preston and her team to find him. When Ruby finds evidence in her lover, Nathan Crosby's home, she is positive he has been framed. But with time running out, can Ruby discover who the killer is before he takes more victims.
Following on from Love You To Death, Sleep Tight is the second novel in Mitchell's DS Ruby Preston. At the end of Love You To Death, I was unsure where Mitchell would take Ruby, but I enjoyed the opportunity to get to know the character better, and found the conflict between her personal and professional life intriguing, particularly as Nathan becomes involved in the investigation. In addition, there are several compelling characters in Ruby's team, and I enjoyed learning more about them, particularly their personal lives, as this gave the characters more depth.
Unlike in Love You To Death, the reader learns who the perpetrator is early in the novel. This helped me to get under his skin. It was particularly interesting to read about his relationship with the Crosby family and learn what made him tick. This allowed Mitchell to create a sense of danger, and it is that that ultimately kept me reading: I wanted to find out if Ruby would find the killer and be safe.
I did not expect Sleep Tight to end in the way that it did, and I am pleased that the ending was slightly open, paving the way for what should be an interesting third instalment in the DS Ruby Preston series!
When I read the first installment to this series I said two things in my review. One that it was good, but a bit slow to get going, two that it could be a great start to a fantastic series. So here's part two and firstly let me say that there's no slow start here. It's a balls out, straight into the fray thrilling plot right from the prologue. And it really was just the beginning of what I now know is going to be a fabulous must read series.
There's a killer in the East End, preying on prostitutes. When the bodies are found they're laid out in sickening recreations of fairy tales....and not your standard Disney versions - no this killer is a fan of the original stories, the one with much less cosy fates for their heroines. Ruby Preston is determined to find the killer. Not only does she know some of the girls but gruesome evidence is placed to implicate her old flame and reluctant East End gangster Nathan Crosby. That flame is still smouldering so she has a race against time to save te girls in danger and the love of her life.
I love Ruby Preston. She's not just a detective who's willing to break the rules. She goes out of her way to do it! Her ambiguous attitude to rules lends a pleasing unpredictability to the narrative. It's an exciting and addictive read, and the ending leaves some intriguing questions about how Ruby's story will continue. Seriously looking forward to part three!
Wowsers....this book is fantastic. Spent my day reading this and occasionally slapping myself on the forehead for not reading any of Caroline Mitchell's books before (immediately downloaded ALL of them!)
This book centers around Detective Ruby Preston and her team as they race to find the killer that has left a series of macabre bodies cleaned and transformed into traditional fairytale charachters (I will never be able to read Cinderella to my daughter again after reading the real version of the story).
To make matters even worse someone is trying to frame Ruby's old /current boyfriend for the murders. Ruby knows deep down that Nathan Crosby couldn't do something like this but with her superiors on the hunt for him she has to work quickly as the bodies pile up.
I loved Ruby and Nathan's relationship it was very real and not overly slushy. I loved Ash and felt that his charachter was written so well. The Doctor was portrayed very well and his disfigurement was left to my warped imagination to figure out how terrifying he looked (not gonna lie I'm probably not going to sleep tonight). And just when you think it's all over Caroline Mitchell hits you over the head with a sledgehammer of a twist. Overall I give this book a squillion out of ten.....wait....no....I give it a squillion and one (",)
Great writing and a fab plot.
I enjoyed the interaction with the Crosby family again, there was so much more in this book.
Nathan’s brother isn’t a very nice chap, is he?
I was suspicious of everyone!
We didn’t hear much from Ruby’s family in this story, I thought there would be more about her mum and daughter.
The way Ruby cared about potential victims showed a softer side, and I liked that.
The way the victim’s bodies were prepared and posed was horrific, and it seriously creeped me out. Grimm fairytales indeed.
Only Caroline Mitchell’s sick mind could come up with this!! :)
The characters had really good depth, delving in to their pasts. And I never guessed anything, it took me by surprise every step of the way.
I can’t wait to see what Ruby Preston gets up to next time.
Caroline Mitchell creates some seriously dark and scary stuff
I cannot recommend all her work enough.
Thanks to the publishers, Bookouture, and NetGalley for the copy in return for an honest review.
Wow! Book 2 in the D S Ruby Preston series was every bit as good as book 1. I love the ballsy attitude of Ruby but would just like her to stand up to Lenny and slap him! This book is well written, a really good plot, plenty tension, great characters and enough murders to keep you interested right to the end. What is next for Ruby? I really can't wait to find out. If you like your crime books, start with the first book! Many thanks to Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads and Amazon.
Caroline Mitchell's best novel by far!
Sleep tight is the second book featuring DS Ruby Preston in a race against time to find the true identity of another twisted killer before the man she's always been forbidden to love is framed for a crime, for once, he isn't actually guilty of.
I can't get enough of the delicate, volatile, wildly turbulent yet sizzling relationship between Ruby and her childhood sweetheart, Nathan Crosby. A dangerous man whose only weakness is Ruby. A man who is so far over the line of criminality that by rights Ruby should know better than to continue their illicit 'relationship' - if you can call it that - but due to her contacts with the underworld, and not being afraid of taking advantage if it provides the answers she needs faster than the conventional policing methods, she herself often treads a very fine line. I find myself feeling very protective over Ruby and I'd like to see Lenny receive some good old fashioned justice at the hands of his brother in the future... that man is truly disgusting! Bravo to Caroline for provoking such strong emotions in me through fictional characters!
Roll on book 3!
Thanks to Bookouture for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

My Review
Omg what a fantastic thriller, the plotline truly amazing, just the right amount of darkness and thrills, unputdownable. Caroline Mitchell has outdone herself again.
A compelling read following DS Ruby Preston as she races against time to catch a serial killer who is snatching young women, then posing them in character in staged scenes, someone is trying to frame her lover Nathan, a man from the other side of the law. We go through the turmoil that Ruby inevitably feels as she tries to stay true to her profession but also the love for Nathan and their daughter, trying everything she can to bring the true killer to justice.
I hadn't read the first in the series but there was enough history in the story to enable an understanding of the characters and not leave me wondering who they really are, I will go back and read the first but you certainly could read this book as a standalone.
A compelling and dark thriller which will keep you on the edge of your seat and take you on a rollercoaster ride of your life and leave you wanting more.
I’m a huge fan of Caroline Mitchell and was so happy to see the second in the Ruby Preston series being released. Caroline Mitchell has a way of drawing a reader in from the first page and Sleep Tight was no different.
In Sleep Tight Detective Ruby Preston is on the hunt for a serial killer, this is one sick and twisted serial killer though and I will admit I got goose bumps a lot while reading this book, that’s a good thing in my opinion.
I really liked getting to know Ruby in Love You To Death and it was great getting to follow her story a bit more. Ruby’s not your average Detective, she has a past that she can’t forget and doesn’t want to either but it’s one that she can’t let interfere with her career, easier said than done though in Ruby’s case. She’s a brilliant character, she has balls and isn’t afraid to bend the rules but she has respect from all her team. I also love Nathan Crosby, he’s the father of Ruby’s child and there’s still such an attraction between the pair but Nathan’s not on the right side of the law so it’s detrimental to Ruby’s career that the no one finds out.
I’m not going to say much about the plot as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but I will say it takes many twists and turns, it will keep you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails and looking over your shoulder. I’m not sure how Caroline Mitchell comes up with these stories but boy are they good, gruesome and quite scary *shivers*. I honestly didn’t want this book to end and can’t wait to read more in this series.
Sleep Tight could possibly be read as a stand alone but I would recommend reading Love You To Death first, that way you’ll get to know the characters a bit better and honestly its just another great book.
I've done that thing of requesting a book from the lovely people at Bookature and NetGalley without clocking (or perhaps ignoring) the fact that ''Sleep Tight'' is a series book featuring Detective Ruby Preston. The previous books being ''Love You To Death'' and ''Pretty Little Girls''. So, if like me, you're a newbie to the series (or indeed Caroline Mitchell) rest assured that ''Sleep Tight'' is a great standalone book, and I certainly didn't feel at a loss in any way for diving straight in with this one.
So as this was my introduction to Ruby Preston I have to say I found her very engaging - she's sort of like the detective with a heart of gold who commands the respect of her colleagues with her feisty demeanour and seeming inability to shy away from putting herself on the line, in more ways than one. She's supported here by some equally super characters operating on both sides of the law.
The Doctor is such a subversive killer, liking not only to take the lives of his victims, but to torture and stage them in some really creepy ways. His total lack of any kind of empathy or morals is really well portrayed, and he does come across as a total weirdo!
I enjoyed the chase of Detective Preston and her team trying to track down the killer, and the pace keeps going throughout so there is plenty here to keep even the most demanding reader happy.
And so now here I am in that utopia of having to play catch-up with the books of Caroline Mitchell - how lucky am I?!
''Sleep Tight'' is a thrilling read - action-packed with great characters - what more could you ask for?
Sleep Tight by Caroline Mitchell is the second book in the Detective Ruby Preston series. The first book was Love You to Death which I reviewed here. In Sleep Tight, a serial killer hits the streets of London targeting young women who are killed and then dressed up as fairy-tale princesses before being posed awaiting discovery. The killings are gruesome and the detectives are stuck trying to solve the mystery which was complex as the killer leaves no clues behind.
The beginning of this story was a bit slow for me. The first murder and suspect were introduced in the beginning chapters of the book. The investigation seemed to drag on as it focused on the first suspect. However, things quickly turned around when the second suspect was introduced. This was someone known to the lead detective hence making the case personal. I started enjoying the book more after this and became completely hooked as the story progressed.
As in the first book, Detective Ruby Preston stands out as a different kind of detective. She is not the usual lead with a bit of baggage and sad history. What makes her unique is her connections with the underworld. Her relationship with the Crosby brothers is unorthodox though undoubtedly quite interesting. In this book, Ruby is strong, intuitive and a lot more confident. In addition, she continues to balance between the right and wrong. Ruby knows what it means to go rogue and I totally enjoy reading about her daring moves. It was a delight to follow her as she solved the case by all means necessary. What I like about Ruby is that she can be a badass but she still has a softer, caring side that made her attached to the case and those close to her. I think she is the kind of friend that I would like to have in my corner.
The case was intriguing in more different ways. I remember reading the villain’s POVs and thinking about the crazy Unsubs of Criminal Minds. The villain was dark and twisted. Selfish, personal motives kept the body count going up. In addition, the villain wasn’t just cold but creepy as hell. As always, the darker narrations were both scary and fascinating. I couldn’t wait for the detectives to put everything together though.
Caroline wrote this book in a way that the focus was on the case and the investigation. The villain’s name is revealed almost midway the story but this doesn’t take away the mystery. It is one thing to know who the killer is and quite a different issue to find them especially if they live off the grid. The detectives had quite a task but it was fascinating to see all the pieces coming together. There was an unexpected twist towards the end of the story which I really liked.
Sleep Tight by Caroline Mitchell is a book that will appeal to fans of crime thrillers. Although part of a series, it can be read as a standalone.
In East London a savage and murderous serial killer is stalking the streets as we once again meet Detective Ruby Preston in the second book in her series. Ruby’s loyalties are tested to the extreme in this novel, as her lover and father of her daughter, Nathan Crosby, insists that he is being framed for crimes he did not commit and her boss wants him brought in for questioning as the chief suspect. Nathan’s family are notorious criminals in their patch, but Ruby has total faith in Nathan and swears that she will track down the crazed killer and prove Nathan’s innocence.
If only it were that easy. The killer is a fantasist and is bent on creating a name for himself. He considers himself an artist and he has chosen his theme for the murders as fairytale characters. He has researched his topic meticulously and pays great attention to detail, using his surgical skills to strike fear in the local area. Nobody is safe, especially those that do not heed the warnings. Luckily the Crosby family agree to help Ruby with her enquiries by feeding relevant information to the local nick. Then Nathan breaks the news to Ruby that he knows the identity of the serial killer and the hunt is on. But the faster the pace of the investigation, the more determined the killer becomes and soon the time will come to pay the price for the professional investigation. It’s a very high price to pay and leaves Ruby’s team reeling with shock.
This novel is fast paced and very dark. You must enter the underworld with bravery and at your own risk. Both familiar and new characters are deftly created and carefully developed. There are some very nasty criminals at work whose intensions are not always clear cut, and predicting what will happen next is hindered by shocking plot twists, thrilling new discoveries and blind alleyways. Ruby is driven and determined but her unorthodox methods lead her into mortal danger. She knows that she must keep on track in order to save Nathan who has always been there for her. Caroline Mitchell’s storytelling is immensely skilled and extremely thrilling; her mind always ahead of the ingenious story, fuelling the next step in the story. I would like to thank NetGalley and publisher Bookouture for my copy of ‘Sleep Tight’, sent out to me in return for an honest review. This novel is a very good read within the crime thriller genre and this is a 4.5* review from me.
This book will take you on a journey which you won't be able to stop until the very end. Be warned, don't start reading this late at night as you may well find yourself still awake the following morning.
Detective Ruby Preston is a complex character to say the least. She has numerous skeletons in her closet, has ties to a notorious criminal family, yet also has a heart of gold. She cares very much about her fellow officers, well those she likes at least. This story puts Ruby through the ringer as she has to go with her gut which leads her down a path she may not come back from. She is going against her fellow officers which is never a good thing to do.
This was another brilliant story in a series which is becoming a firm favourite. Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for providing a copy.
Sleep Tight is the latest offering from Caroline Mitchell in the DS Ruby Preston series of books.
In this instalment a serial killer is stalking the streets of London where women are being murdered and their bodies are posed as fairytale princesses. Ruby is determined to hunt him down but then body parts are found at her lover, Nathan Crosby's home. She's convinced he is being framed but can she prove it and also find the killer?
I read this book in a couple of days. It's so easy to read and you are enthralled from the first page. The main characters work well together and the book is fantastic to read. I really enjoyed it and can highly recommend it. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and Caroline Mitchell for the chance to review.
