Thank you to the publishers Atlantic Books and Net galley for the arc in return for an honest review.
This was a well drawn psychological coming of age story focussing on the twins Sarah and Robin, who are part of a very dysfunctional and ultimately destructive family dynamic. There are some really dark themes in the book; suicide, mental health, the impact of divorce, child abuse and trauma. Much of this is seen through the filter of the teenage Robin as the novel flits between the past and present with ease.
The tone of the book is claustrophobic and I really got caught in the tangled web of the two families and the secrets and ties that bind them together. The past is not as far away as it seems, and the consequences of actions twenty years ago reverberate in ways that are not apparent until the final chapters of the book. With a twist that I hadn't expected, this book is definitely one I would recommend you read.
I stayed up way past my bedtime last night to finish this. Just couldn't stop reading.
Told from the points of view of twins, Sarah and Robin, and switching between the present and the 1990s when the girls were growing up in the South of England, this was an intricately woven story of two families whose lives became intertwined. I'm intentionally vague because I think this will be enjoyed more the less you know about it before you start. It's full of drama and the short chapters and frequently switching POVs, one in first- the other in third-person, and two different timelines made it easy to read just one more chapter and then another one.
Some of the shocking things that happened were relatively easy to predict, there was some great foreshadowing, but that was perfectly fine in this case. I think the reason for this was that I felt involved in the story and cared about (some of) the characters. I may even have screamed something like "oh, no, no, no" several times. Towards the end, the story became more fast-paced and very twisted. The author totally floored me with a huge twist somewhere around the 90% mark. I had not expected that at all.
Last year, I really enjoyed Holly Seddon's debut Try Not to Breathe, but wow, with this second novel she really stepped up another gear. Holly Seddon handled several serious topics with sensitivity and psychological insight. A very cleverly layered plot and beautifully written.
Highly recommended if you enjoy dark stories exploring family dynamics.
I received an ARC via NetGalley.
Brilliant Book. There are so many parts to this story. Two families become friends but how far do these friendships go. Families torn apart and put back together with different members. This book certainly keeps you on your toes and just as you think you have got it then another twist is introduced. The title is very apt you certainly cant close your eyes otherwise you have missed a whole chunk. Loved it
This book is told from the perspectives of twins Robin and Sarah, with the story flicking between present day and various years of their childhood. (I love stories told like this). They're both complex and flawed characters, and as a result your thoughts and feelings on who you prefer. like/dislike, and sympathise with are constantly changing.
It's a really brilliant book!
The twists and the turns in this story had me hooked. When you think you know where the story is going another twist is revealed which catches you off guard. The final third of this book was brilliant and the final few chapters were insane in the best way possible, I didn't see any of it coming.
If you enjoy something that keeps you guessing then this is one for you.
Thanks to NetGalley, Corvus and Holly Seddon for my ARC.
As a twin myself I found this really interesting - and did not want to put it down. Very easy to read and interesting and lots of twists. Very enjoyable - many thanks
I thought that Don't Close Your Eyes was even more gripping than Holly Seddon's first novel Try Not to Breathe. It is a story of two families whose lives become entwined and is told by the twin sisters, in short chapters, and jumps between the past and the present. This is a brilliant psychological thriller which leaves you totally reeling with all the twists and turns, with the final twist being a total surprise! Definintely worth reading!
Thanks to Net Galley and Atlantic Books for giving me the chance to read this fantastic book.
Wow! I finished this book in a little over 24 hours. I'm an avid reader but usually takes on average a week to finish a book. Don't close your eyes had me hooked from the first chapter and I found it extremely difficult to put down.
Full of twists and turns, the ending was a shocker but kept me guessing right til the end. Something that also doesn't happen too often! This book deals with many difficult topics and was written beautifully. I don't want to give anything away, but prepare to be blown away, I shall definitely be reading more from Holly Seddon. Thank you for the chance to read in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalleyfor an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I will start by saying I absolutely loved this book. I was drawn in from the first chapter and that never let up throughout the entire book! The final twist, well what can I say, it was so cleverly written that I never even seen it coming.
This is a story about a dysfunctional family and their intertwined relationships. The narrative switches between the twin sisters Sarah and Robin as well as the past and the present. The twins relationship becomes very strained when their parents split and they get a new step brother. Sarah is taken away from Robin and moved to America with her mother. So it is no surprise that this causes the siblings to grow apart. Robin seems to have a great start in life, with a successful career in a band. However as time passes she becomes reclusive, never leaving her home. Sarah gets into some trouble and decides to seek out her sisters help even though she has no idea where to find her and so the story follows Sarahs search and Robin's fascination with order and her neighbours.
This book flows really well and it was a really enjoyable read! I can't wait for the next book!
A compelling tale of dysfunctional people and the relationships they form, with a significant twist at the end. I loved following the lives of the twins, Sarah and Robin and how their lives were influenced by those around them.
A well written novel exploring the break up of two families and the ensuing repercussions on the children. If you can manage the minutiae of the melt down you'll find some interesting twists towards the end. I questioned the whole nature nurture thing applying it to the relationships of the twins and Callum. In the latter case I think Callum's life was wholly blighted by his father and would have fared badly even if his parents hadn't broken up. However, the twins, although each very different would have had a better chance if their life together hadn't been rent apart by the division of the marital 'spoils'.
A trUley heartrending book about two families whose children shared sleepovers and days out with their parents and then suddenly it all changes. It's a hard book to read involving many subjects such as abuse, rape ,abortion and lies. It stars slowly and builds to a crescendo I never saw coming. An excellent psychological thriller to keep you reading all night.. Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read it
I really enjoyed this book, what a great read! We follow the lives of Sarah, Robin and Callum, three children whose lives are ripped apart by the selfish actions of their parents. The story is told from the viewpoint of twins Sarah and Robin and we follow their lives from childhood to adulthood, when they both reach rock bottom. Having been estranged for years, Robin is now agoraphobic and merely existing in a state of terror. When Sarah's life falls apart, she realises Robin is the one person who can help her.
This is a wonderfully crafted domestic noir, a family drama which shows how the impact of someone's selfish actions can reverberate through the years. Plenty of twists and turns with quite a shock revelations, this is a brilliant read which I can certainly recommend. Having loved Holly's first book Try Not to Breathe, I was delighted to be given the chance to read this one as an arc by the publisher and Netgalley.
This book is a book about family dynamics and family secrets. The book leaps between past and present focusing on twins Sarah & Robin who have not spoken to each other in years. Both of them have problems which have stemmed from their teenage years. As children their life changes when their family gets involved with the Granger family.
I was initially a bit worried about what I would think of this book as I have read Holly Seddon's first book but nearly gave up on it although in the end I was glad I stuck with it. This book was totally different, I was gripped by this story from the first page. I was eager to know what could have happened to them in the past to have led their lives to where they were as adults. I really didn't see the twist when it came either. I just couldn't put this book down.
I really enjoyed this book, a tale of what can go wrong when families make difficult and damaging decisions.
This was interesting, well written and had more dead ends than I expected.
Well worth a read.
Honestly this is a great book- the tension leading up to the end is quite compelling and I found myself glued to my Kindle reading it.
Sarah and Robin two sisters split up when their parents divorce
Callum the interloper brother coming on to the scene
A series of events come together in quite a believeable narrative , can you trust good Sarah, has she really been so badly done by her Jim, what could she possibly have done to deserve having her little girl taken from her.
Why is Robin hiding- why does someone seem to want to break into her home, who is so angry at her
The problem is the ending- I thought it too mundane this book deserved a better ending it really did
The way the author switches between characters, times, and person makes for a relatively difficult read. However, it adds to the build up of tension as a shattering experience for Sarah, one of the principal characters, leads into the disintegration of all their lives. A difficult read from several points of view, but hard to put down and harder still to forget.
This is a fairly well-paced family drama with enough tension to keep it moving despite uncomfortable jolts between narrative perspectives and times. I'm finding that telling a story by jumping back and forth through time and told by multiple characters is a very fashionable thing lately, but confess I find it disorienting and a burden to have to keep track of who said what and when.
That being said I was pretty invested in finding out what would happen and it kept me guessing, so all in all, this worked.
Twin sisters Robin & Sarah have not seen each other for years. Each in turn has their own problems to deal with. Robin a recluse & Sarah has been kicked out by her husband Jim and forced to leave her daughter Violet.
A little slow in places but I did really enjoy it nonetheless. I was waiting for something really juicy to happen and then bam, I didn't see that one coming.
I would recommend this book. Definitely a slow burner but worth it.
My thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for the advance reader copy.
Wow what a fantastically gripping book.
The characters lives covered so many aspects of real day to day issues. I was hooked from the first chapter wanting to know more. I would recommend this Author/book to anyone who loves a read that is full of twists and turns.
This book is not what I expected but a great read .The two main characters Robin and Sarah show how families are affected by decisions made by their parents. A page turner that keeps you wondering what the end will bring.
