This is a fantastic conclusion to Leo Hunt's trilogy and Luke Manchett remains my favourite protagonist ever.
What an astonishingly good ending to a deeply interesting and exciting series. This series is one of the better things that Netgalley has given me, and one that I am truly grateful for. It started with a 'oh that might be interesting' and ended with 'this series has me in its thrall and I can't let go'. There's so much believable magic going on in here that it makes me a little bit nervous, but in a good way. Put together a reluctant necromancer who's seen more beyond this world than he should have, his snarky and talented girlfriend, the Devil, an ancient evil and some smaller but just as important characters, and you have a story that just won't let you put it down. Seriously, this is a brilliant series ending. Everything twists and turns in unexpected ways before being tied up in such a way that there are no disappointments and a perfect amount of open-endedness. I'm hugely fussy about endings, and on both a book and a series level, this one is one of the best I've ever read. Fantastically creepy and creepily fantastic.
A great end to an interesting triology. I enjoyed all 3 of these books, this one wasn't my favourite but I enjoyed reading it non the less (within a day)
This series doesn't get enough credit
Like the others in the series, this was a really enjoyable read. It doesn't get 5*s because frankly, I'm fussy, and something has to hit all my super personal esoteric spots to manage that. However, it's probably a 4.5* read, and I found it a lot of fun to read.
What I love about this series is how it manages to take these massive, dramatic life-or-death situations and showdowns with the devil and the potential end of the world, and somehow avoid making them melodramatic or ridiculous. I don't know how Leo Hunt does it, but it's damned impressive. There's plenty of light-hearted humour and sarcasm of a kind that doesn't feel unreasonably sassy (some books, I can't help but think I've never met anyone who ACTUALLY has a smart mouth like that in real life), but feels realistic instead.
He also does a great job of recapping the earlier books in the series without info-dumping: there are enough references to past events to trigger your memory of any of the important ones, but it doesn't feel like you're hearing everything for the second time. Then again, it's quite a long time since I read the others, so I needed the refresher, and there are definitely things I might've engaged with more if I could remember what happened in book two. But on the whole, it was pretty easy to follow.
That said, the ARC I read could only be accessed via Adobe Digital Editions. This caused two problems: one, I was staring at my computer screen for two hours, which gave me a headache, and two, it froze every time I reached a chapter break because of something in the formatting. This kept pulling me out of the story while I waited for it to sort itself out, and made it somewhat harder to stay focused. It's absolutely not the author's fault, but it's a shame my reading experience was less positive as a result of this.
Hopefully, I'll write a full review soon and post it on my blog. I'm in the middle of a really busy university term so I'm focusing on short Goodreads reviews at the moment, but I intend to get back to proper ones when things calm down.
It's been a while since I read part two of the series, but it was easy to pick up and get back into the world.
We start with Luke experiencing difficulty coming to terms with the presence of Darren, his mother's new boyfriend. Still, he shows willing and heads to the woods with mum and boyfriend for a New Year celebration with a difference. And, my goodness, is it a celebration you wouldn't expect.
Nothing is straightforward, and we watch Luke and Elza battling a spirit that has broken through from Deadside, determined to help the dead take over the world of the living.
What follows is nothing short of bizarre - a strange nightmare-like sequence of events, culminating in a battle that I never envisaged happening.
This is a definite hit for those who've followed the series, and I do wonder whether it's being left with the possibility of finding out what happens to Luke in the future.
