Clara and Nick are a young married couple, he's a dentist and she is a stay at home mum to their daughter Maisie and their four day old son Felix. To allow Clara to rest with Felix Nick takes Maisie to ballet but on the way home there is a car accident and he is killed - amazingly Maisie escapes unharmed. The days and weeks following the accident Clara Maisie keeps having nightmares in which she says someone was following the car before the accident and Clara becomes more and more convinced that someone drove them off the road although there is no evidence of this. Clara also discovers more and more secrets that Nick had been hiding from her and tries to discover if anyone had a motive for killing him. The story alternates between Clara's story after the accident and Nick's life in the run up to it. I found this book very slow to start with and really struggled with it. Although the pace was a bit better from about half way I still found it difficult to get into and couldn't warm to the characters at all. I'm sure that other readers will love the book but unfortunatley I found it hard going.

Thanks to Netgalley, Harlequin UK and Mary Kubica for the opportunity to read and review this title.

Wow I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. It had me hooked from the very first page and I couldn't resist picking it up at every opportunity. I loved the alternating chapters and timeline, especially how the before and after worked leading right up to the incident and explaining everyting. It worked perfectly. I have enjoyed all this authors books. Would highly recommend this book.

This is the latest dark and disturbing psychological thriller from Mary Kubica. It explores the state of a marriage and asks whether it is really possible to know your partner. The story is narrated through the perspectives of Clara Solberg and her husband, Nick. A shattered Clara has recently given birth to son, Felix, and is looking after him when the police knock on the door. Nick has been killed after he crashed into a tree on his return journey from collecting 4 year old daughter, Maisie, from ballet class. The police have ruled it an accident.

An overwhelmed Clara is suffering from shock, grief and finding it hard to come to terms with her new status of widow and single mother of two young children. Her father is struggling to cope with caring for her mother, who is caught in the grips of dementia. Her suspicions arise when Maisie begins to suffer from terrible nightmares where she talks of a bad man and a black car. The police dismiss her concerns of there being more to Nick's death. However, an obsessed Clara cannot let it go as she starts investigating in her search for the truth and whether Nick was murdered. In this twisted story, it soon becomes clear that Nick's life harboured secrets and lies.

The novel starts with a slow pace but later shifts dramatically as the story becomes considerably more fast paced. There is plenty of suspense, tension and twists. It is beautifully written and well plotted. I really liked the characters of Clara and Nick, a man of good intentions and coming clean but never quite gets there. An enjoyable and entertaining read. Thanks to Harlequin for an ARC.

A great book and a must read for all. Loved every minute of this fantastic book. I had high hopes for this book as I have loved so many books from this author. It's up there as one of my favourite reads this year.

When Clara's husband Nick dies in a car accident, she is convinced that there is foul play. Their daughter Maisie, who was on the backseat, is traumatised and is frightened of 'the bad man' in a black car. As Clara begins to delve into her husbands past, secrets and lies are revealed. Did Clara really know her husband?

Mary Kubica slowly reveals all with alternating narratives from Clara and Nick and has created another suspenseful thriller.

I have been looking forward to reading this novel for sometime now and have had high hopes for it, so on reading it I am so pleased to be writing positive things rather than saying how disappointed I was.
The latest novel by author Mary Kubica is an excellent read and succeeded in keeping me up trying to finish it in an effort to discover the truth.
Clara Solberg's perfect life collapses the day her husband, Nick, and her daughter, Maisie are involved in a car crash. Nick is killed but fortunately Maisie survives. The Police are certain that the crash is an accident, caused by Nick speeding and apparently losing control and crashing into a tree. But when Maisie starts to have nightmares and when she mentions that there was another car involved Clara starts to think that maybe her husband was murdered.
Clara is troubled and needs answers, she refuses to tell her daughter that Nick is dead and struggles to eat and sleep.
Clara discovers that Nick had secrets and there are plenty of unanswered questions. She discovers that they were in a lot of debt and that Nick was gambling. Lots of unanswered questions that throw her suspicions on several people as she tries to uncover the truth behind her husbands death.

The story is told in part by Clara, the here and now and Nick's tells his story in the months leading up to his death. This book is full of suspense and is a real page turner. A well written novel that is a real who-dunnit and had me guessing right to the end.
I would highly recommend this novel to readers who love suspense.

I would like to thank Net Galley and HQ for supplying a cop of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this one.
This is my first read by Mary Kubica after hearing such great things about her.
I loved the write up on this and was very excited to read it. I found the story to be a slow burner - it picked up but then left me feeling a little flat and it made me want to skim read some of it just to find out how it ended.
we meet Clara, when she gets a knock on the door telling her husband was driving too fast, has crashed and sadly perished, she cannot believe her ears. Her husband had their daughter Maisie in the car (who survives) and she cannot believe he would risk anything like driving wrecklessly. She sets out to find out if this is the truth as the police dont want to believe her. This is made all the worse when her daughter Maisie starts talking about the bad man in the car. What really happened to Nick that night - read the book to find out!!

Wow I really enjoyed this book, I've read most of her books and had high hopes and this didn't disappoint!!! What a great story and I really enjoyed the not knowing whether it was an accident or not, who did it or not. Had you second guessing throughout and the ending was very apt. Felt for Claire as she was in so much grief and I can't imagine been in that situation. A great book in all a must read.

I really enjoyed reading this book. A nice easy read with enough suspense to keep the reader interested until the end.

I really enjoyed this book, it had an excellent build up and the tension built as it went on.  It draws you in and doesn't let you go until the end.  Lots of twists and turns, things are really not quite as they seem, just when I thought I had everything sorted in my mind in relation to where the story was going, bang, and off it went in anther direction- exactly my kind of book - thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended - 5 stars - review to be published on my blog on publication day

I found it very difficult to get into this book. It was hard to engage with the main character and i don't think the alternate timelines were written in the best possible way.

Another five star winner from this author. Fast paced throughout, kept me guessing all the way. One of the best books so far this year.
