A thriller that is well written, and the characters believable. I found it went at a slightly slower pace than most books of it's genre but it was still good nonetheless.
Recommended.
Nat and Beth work together in a friendly pub and are close friends. So when Beth fails to turn up to work one day Nat is naturally concerned. However, a text from Beth saying she's gone to see her Mum puts Nat's mind at rest. Weeks pass and Nat digs deeper with each enquiry she makes causing her more and more worry. Eventually she goes to the police who show little interest. It's only Nat's perseverance that produces the final result and the twists and turns in her search shall keep you guessing right to the very last pages. Well written with finely crafted characters this is a genuinely gripping read.
I struggled to get into this book and even when I did, I found it didn't encapsulate me in the way some thrillers do. I found the characters flawed to the point where I didn't care where Beth was for most of the book, however it definitely picked up during the final third of the book. Overall it just wasn't thrilling enough for me and there were too many characters to sail through it.
Beth has gone missing, but where has she gone? Natalie has a feeling something isn't quite right but she's not sure what. Working in the pub, she knows how Beth acted around the customers. Victor lives on the caravan site nearby, over 90 he lives a simple life. When he collapses and finds himself in hospital, he can't work out if what he saw was real or whether his mind is playing tricks on him. Nat makes it her business to find out what has happened to Beth, but is someone watching her? Is she in danger?
I found the book an interesting read, but one that was very difficult to follow as it flitted between the many characters in the book. There was a good plot twist at the end.
This is a perfect mystery for me - complex, involving no shortage of characters to suspect and ponder over.
Having previously enjoyed The Last Husband by this author, I was more than happy to be able to read and review this one and I'm delighted to say that it is completely different to it's predecessor. The only link is that both main characters have the dogged determination and fearlessness to get to the bottom of things.
Every character in this book was the guilty party in my mind at some point during the story! Multi-layered and gripping, it was truly puzzling and led to many hours of turning over events in my mind whilst the kindle was out of my hands. Happily, the offender wasn't revealed until the last few pages.
A terrifically intriguing book, and one which I heartily recommend to all lovers of a darn good believable and captivating novel. A well-earned five stars from me.
I received an arc via Net Galley in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
A reasonable thriller storyline but not a book I found easy to read. The start particularly almost put me off and even further in the story I can't say I took to any of the characters or even became interested in them.
I'm sure people willl disagree with me as it is that kind of book... love it or hate it I guess.
Absolutely loved this book, a real page turner and I didn't want to come to the end.
It took me a while to get to grips with this thriller but once I did I enjoyed it. I liked Natalie and was caught up in her search to find out what happened to her friend Beth. I read a lot of thrillers and this one kept me guessing until the end. I would like to thank NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really struggled with this book. Too many characters. I got totally lost and couldn't keep up with the story. Sorry, I gave up without finishing it
I enjoyed Christabel Kent's first book but this one was even better. Beth has disappeared and only her friend Nat seems concerned. She has a hard job getting the police to take Beth missing seriously. I kept thinking I knew who had her but I was wrong every time! This book has many twists and turns and it wasn't until the last chapter s that I finally realized what had happened.
Thank you Netgalley for my copy.
I did enjoy The Day She Disappeared by Christobel Kent but it did take me quite a while to really get into it, I would say I was about 30% in before I started to zone out.By this I mean when I am reading if I find a book good, I go almost into a book coma, unaware of anything else, I'm sure you get my drift. we've all been there.
So I'm gonna break it down into what worked for me and what I struggled with, but be aware this is just my personal opinion and what I struggled with may not bother you at all.
First of all, this was my first toe-dip into Christobel Kent's work, it was the story description that initially drew me to this book, I found it very intriguing.
As I said, I had difficulty at first connecting with the story. If I had to pinpoint what it was that caused this I think maybe I found the writing style quite hard to follow and as I was concentrating on deciphering the language and my brain failed to engage with the story properly.
The story follows Nat as she tries to decipher what has happened to her friend Beth.
Once I became engrossed in the story my mind was working overtime suspecting everyone.
You are kept guessing until the end and I never did work out who the killer was, so it came as I surprise, which in my opinion is a sign of a good murder mystery.
I also liked how we were allowed to creep into the killer's head, seeing the facts from his point of view while still being kept in the dark over his identity.
So, in conclusion, this is a great intriguing read, It's interesting and well paced with great world-building it just took me a small while to get my head into the game.
Fast paced and with lots of characters, an interesting mystery but I never really got emotionally involved. My favourite thrillers are those that really make me care about at least one of the characters. They don't have to be heroes and can be flawed but I really do care about what happens to them and I can stay until 3am to read the last page. To be honest I read a lot of thrillers and that does not happen that often, most are ok like this one, but nothing to write home about. For some reason I have never connected to Beth and reached the end without wanting to know what happened to her. The only character I cared about was Victor the old guy. As mystery goes, it was interesting as anyone could be hiding secrets but to be honest I really struggle to finish this book, probably because of a lack of emotional interest from my part.
A good fast paced story which I devoured in two days. Well written with the right amount of suspense. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to review it.
Excellent book. Great main characters and plot. I would recommend this book.
I would like to thank Sphere and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Day She Disappeared’ by Christobel Kent in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Nat knows that her best friend, Beth, wouldn’t just leave without saying goodbye. But Beth has gone leaving all her belongings including clothes and mobile phone, and no one, especially the police, believe Nat when she says that someone is following her. It isn’t until the end that Nat realises what’s happened to Beth but is it too late?
I enjoyed ‘The Day She Disappeared’ and although at times I became confused with the number of characters involved it was gripping and kept me enthralled till the final page.
Absolutely brilliant, The identity of the killer was a complete surprise, I had a list of 4, which changed all the time. the characters are all written so well, and the reader really feels Nat and Victor's fear .An enthralling thriller which would make a fab TV series.
